Collecting Liberty Dollars has caught the attention of many since the infamous raid on Liberty Dollar facilities by the FBI in 2007, but there are a few collections that have roots predating that event.  Bernard von NotHaus (on one of his visits to my house) told me that I was the first person who had expressed an interest in collecting Liberty Dollars.  That was in late 2003 or early 2004.  When I made my first bulk purchase of 1000 of the one ounce silver pieces (all were sold or traded into the marketplace except 20 pieces), they came in as one of the very few orders of the #8 'Big E' that was produced.  Shortly after that I started looking for the older pieces and successfully located one or more of each type except the #5.  For whatever reason, this one was initially hard to locate and Bernard himself finally provided me with three pieces for the lowly sum of $30 each.  After I informed him that I now had all of the existing varieties in my possession, he stopped by for a visit and brought his own collection to show me.  He had acquired a nice wooden display case for them and proudly displayed them on my kitchen table.  At that time neither of us had considered Sunshine mint employees or the die makers.  More than one of the mint employees had put away one each of every variety that they had minted and likewise for the man who was making the dies (I was contacted several years later by the original die maker looking to sell some of his pieces).  None of these were to continue collecting every piece until the judge ordered a halt to Liberty Dollar production in 2009, however, so they did not wind up with complete collections.  After the raid of 2007, Sunshine mint no longer produced the pieces (so mint employees lost the ability to get later pieces easily) and several other die makers were employed at different times for different pieces, so none of them ever had easy access to the full array of pieces.

This website has put me in the unique position of being the first contact of many people looking to buy and sell Liberty Dollars, so I know where many of the rare pieces are located and who the premiere Liberty Dollar collectors are.  The following is a list (very un-detailed in order to protect their identities) of those collectors ranked in order of completeness of their collections to the best of my knowledge.  Key status separators are the matched number SMI sets, the RCO hallmark sets and the rare EVANSVILLE & NYDD pieces.  Only a handful of collectors own both those sets and the EVANSVILLE.
