Gorgeous photo of the 2008 Ron Paul campaign medallion described below (#53).

Does this look like counterfeit US coinage to you?  How many US coins have you seen with a phone number and website on them?

#11  2004 $20

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

(highest auction $256 by heatherstreasures19 on 9/9/20)

This piece was minted in anticipation of rising silver prices driving the face value above $10.  The short lived high prices of 2004 did not last long enough, and the move to the $20 base ounce did not happen until Thanksgiving day, 2005, so these pieces were never minted in quantity.

Update

It turns out that in anticipation of the $20 base move up, lots of these had been minted and were sitting in the warehouse at Sunshine mint waiting to be released.  They were never released, so they were all taken by the FBI in the raid.  When silver was returned to the true owners of the siezed warehouse goods, these were sent back in place of other pieces they could not return, so there are lots of them out there now, as evidenced by full rolls of them being sold on ebay.

#14  2005 $20 Type I (short hair lock)

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

This piece had been minted and stockpiled to replace #11.  The move up indeed happened in 2005, so these pieces were promptly put into RCO hands via the exchange program, where the old $10 base pieces were traded for the $20 base pieces plus a small re-minting fee.  The volume of exchanges was seriously underestimated and the stock of #14 was quickly depleted and the die worn out pumping out more.  There was a delay in exchanges until the new die (#15) was ready.

Many, many thousands of these pieces were minted.

#15  2005 $20 Type II (long hair lock)

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

Major differences between #14 & #15 are the hair-lock above the T in TRUST, the size of the ear and the closeness to the rim of the crown tips.  Click here for a close up photo of the differences.

Many, many thousands of these pieces were minted.

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

#47  2007/2006 DOUBLE DATE GENERAL ISSUE

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

(2/9/14 auction $135 by ebay seller powermizer)

NOT an error!  Deliberate use of new obverse with old reverse when USA was moved to rear and © added to further eliminate confusion by non-observant persons.  The USA always meant made in the USA and not coin of the USA.  Many thousands of these were made also, I thought, but again there was a lot of focus on the 2007 custom pieces, so who really knows?

#53  2008 RON PAUL

Created by Nick Leobold in NY (I think)

(highest known private sale $995 for a SN piece by Nic L.)

Many thousands of these were sold.  They were minted in a show of support for Ron Paul's campaign and monetary stance.  They had been sold for about two months prior to the raid, which confiscated many thousands of them.  Was that an effort to slow down his campaign?  Right after the raid, there was a frenzy to obtain any of these pieces that had escaped the FBI and prices rocketed to $400 each or more.  Now that the court case has been settled and things have quieted down, these pieces can be had at more reasonable prices.  There have been numerous recent auctions where they sold in the $60 range.

If you have serial #69 of this, please contact me!

Created for the Bernard von Nothaus RCO

VERY RARE!

(highest known private sale $5000 3/9/2024 by Ron G.)

Probably less than 50 pieces escaped the FBI raid.  This piece was quietly announced on 9/27/2007 in the September Liberty Dollar Newsletter.  I just happened to see it and ordered a tube of 20 pieces (all of which have been sold to collectors except one in my personal set).  Other than that tube, very few were ordered in onsies and twosies according to the girls who ran the Evansville fulfillment office.  BVNH himself tried to get some of my 20 pieces from me shortly after the raid, since all of his were taken and he was having a hard time finding any.  Everyone was focused on the very hot Ron Paul dollars and the newly introduced PEACE/STOP THE WAR 1/2 ounce, so the Evansville piece simply did not get many orders.  As a result, the vast majority of the Evansville mint run was sitting in the safe at the fulfillment office when the FBI came calling in November 2007.  The final decision of the court seven years later branded these pieces contraband, so none of the seized ones will ever see the light of day again.  That makes this piece harder to find than its nearest production (offered for sale to the public) rivals, which is the Ron Paul platinum with a mintage of 100 pieces.  The Liberty Euro and the split quarter, each of which had a mintage of about 100, were special pieces that were NOT produced for public consumption but later found their way into the collector market and are easier to find than the Evansville.  There exist trial runs of pieces that were never brought to production that are rarer.  Some of those are listed on the Known Prototypes page.

Now that my pieces have been sold, they will be extremely hard to find.  Other than mine, only four have ever been listed on Ebay.  If you are looking for one of these, I can tell you who bought from me.  Seven of the Nineteen I sold went to an investor in Australia.  He said he expected them to be at $10,000 each within five years.  If you offer enough, maybe he will sell you one.

On November 14th, 2007 the Liberty Dollar main office in Evansville, Indiana was raided by the FBI and Secret Service, simultaneously with the Sunshine mint,  Verify First Technologies (maker of the certificates) and Kevin Innes' Asheville, NC RCO.  All Liberty Dollar medallions and certificates were seized along with books and records, computers, dies and metals.  It seems the FBI had been investigating Liberty Dollar for possible criminal activity and had concluded (somehow???) that the Liberty Dollar was a counterfeit currency.  As of this writing on January 8th, 2009, no charges of any kind have been brought against anyone nor has a cease and desist order been issued against the organization.  After careful consideration of the organization's position, the decision was made to continue producing and distributing the Liberty Dollar, but with a reverse bearing a sizable blank area in the center ("naked back") for local hallmarking by regional RCOs and the MSRP (Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price) and PVBC (Private, Voluntary Barter Currency) mnemonics.  With skyrocketing silver prices driving the Liberty Dollar to the $50 base on Easter of 2008, another change to the reverse die in the way of a disclaimer that the Liberty Dollar in any way represents legal tender, current money or coin was adopted.  As if one couldn't tell in the first place.  The many custom designs released BEFORE the FBI raid are a clear indication that there was no effort to create a nationally standardized alternate currency.  The first new issue in February of 2008 was the 57th one ounce silver piece issued by the organization, with the new $50 base, #58 being issued the following April.  A total of 34 different customization hallmark designs have been created for the "naked back" issues as of this writing on January 8th, 2009.  (See them on the RCO Hallmark Set page here)

After the raid and in the absence of a cease and desist order, Liberty Dollar continued producing customizable silver rounds until October of 2009, when a judge did order them to cease.  Between the raid and the cease order, eleven different one ounce silver rounds were produced, as shown below from #57 to #67.

#58 & #59 are $50 base pieces

The listed values are the HIGHEST I have personally seen.  Higher ones may have happened that I don't know about.  Keep in mind these are highest known sales and NOT average selling prices.

#60  2008 20 EURO

Created by Kevin Innes NC RCO and one other

VERY RARE!

(highest private sale numbered piece - $1500  2/17/2012)

(highest private sale un-#d piece $3800 3/7/16 by Dave G.)

Only 100 made - un-numbered pieces are EXTREMELY rare.

I contest claims that the Liberty Euro is the rarest Liberty Dollar production.  They were created after the raid of 2007, so none were seized by the FBI and all 100 pieces are in the hands of the public.  By contrast, the Evansville (#55) had most of the run seized by the FBI, so even though there were more of them minted, there are fewer in the hands of the public than the Euros.  Also, it is doubtful that the Ron Paul Platinum piece had a mintage of 100 pieces, so it is also rarer than the Liberty Euro.

Actually, the Liberty Euro should not be included in this list of one ounce silver medallions because it was never released for production by the organization and was never sold through the main office in Evansville, IN (kind of like the copper 'mule' on the copper page).  The 100 pieces that exist were a prototype run done to evaluate the potential for a European market.  Once it was determined that the market was not there, the pieces that were not given to folks in Europe during the presentations were brought back to the US and numbered by BVNH.  They were then sold into the collector market by the two people who conceived the idea and made the pitch in Europe.

The SN 69 piece pictured here resides in a complete, SN SMI set with many addtional #69 pieces (Gillie's, Chambersburg, Marco Island, etc.) belonging to Ron Goodger.  It is probably the most extensive matched serial number set outside BVNH's own holdings.

#61  2009 NAKED BACK

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

Many thousands of these were made.

After 12 years of dealing with the beautiful NORFED collectibles, I suspect this piece may be rarer than previously thought.  It was produced at a time of uncertainty for the organization, with many supporters falling away because of the raid and the prosecution.  Orders for Liberty Dollars were in severe decline as a result, so fewer may have been made than I had guessed.  Time has shown very few of these showing up for sale on ebay.

#64  2009 TORCH BACK TYPE II

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

This piece is easy to distinguish from #62 by the rough finish on both sides.  The copyright symbol under the date is so lightly struck it is not visible.  All lettering is rounder on top than the much superior #62, which was struck at a different mint with a different set of dies.  Click the photo for a larger picture that clearly shows the roughness.  See below for detailed differences between 62, 64 & 65.

Many thousands of these were made.

#65  2009 TORCH BACK TYPE III

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

This piece is VERY similar to #64 but made with a different set of dies at a different mint.  See below for detailed differences between 62, 64 & 65.  I'm not sure how many of these were made, but with quality declining and RCOs quitting right and left because of the raid, it couldn't have been too many, but probably still several thousand.

#66 2009 PEACE TORCH BACK

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

(Minted prior to the cease and desist order, but not released to the public by Liberty Dollar as of 10/30/2009).  These exist in a couple of different qualities, probably because of different runs by different mints.  The better ones are a little harder to find and should command better prices.  Several thousand were made.

Distinguishing differences between 62, 64 and 65 are as follows:

#62 - Smooth, shiney field and smooth face and torch details.  Curved light artifact across Miss Liberty's cheek and neck.  Top quality.

#64 - Rough field, rough head and torch.  Copyright symbol under date too lightly struck to show.  Line on reverse fades under 'V' in PVBC.

#65 - Smooth field, rough head and torch (especially flames).  Miss Liberty's mouth line is noticeably shorter.  'N' in trust in god short on lower right corner.

There may be other die varieties of this design.  It is unknown how many different mints BVNH may have tried while searching for one that could match the quality that Sunshine mint had provided.

Click here for a large photo of all three together for comparison.

No more precious metal medallions have been made by the Liberty Dollar organization since the cease order.  There is, however, no shortage of individuals who know of the fraud and theft being committed by the government/banking complex and are willing to provide precious metals in convenient trade sizes to be distributed to the people.  Some of those individuals have sought to capitalize on the popularity of the Liberty Dollar by licensing the artwork of their obverse design.  Those designs are included here solely because of their resemblance to the Liberty Dollar because of this obverse artwork.  I have chosen to number them in sequence of their release upon the heels of the last Silver Liberty Dollar.

All subsequent pieces have been $50 base pieces.

#68  2009 SECOND AMENDMENT

Created by Bernard von Nothaus

for Buds Gun Shop in Evansville, IN

(highest known ebay auction price $229)

NOT produced by Liberty Dollar, but uses their Liberty head.  The word NORFED is associated with this piece simply as a way of categorizing it to facilitate Ebay searches.

This company licensed the artwork only.  The fine scratches on the reverse are identical on every piece, meaning they are on the die.  They are not very noticeable to the naked eye, but the camera picks up everything in closeup mode.  I have no idea how many of these were made, but I heard it was many thousands.
