Coil Vessels

Rubric

√+ = Extremely high level of creativity and craftsmanship, expertly resolved

√ = Meets criteria, could push further for greater results

√- = Barely meets criteria, more work needed for improvement, unresolved

0 = Does not meet criteria, unresolved, not finished, absent

Communication and Expression

• overall coil design is symmetrical OR asymmetrical

• overall vessel shape is altered beyond a simple cylinder in an unusual way

• the overall shape of the vessel is original and “risky

•Added decorative coils enhance design (min. 3)

• strong rim design that completes/enhances the design of the vessel

Design, Layout and Composition

• base is a min of 3 1/2 to 4 inches

• height between 8 and 12 inches

• minimum of 3 decorative/repeated elements (coil design applications)

• final vessel shows a cohesive + original design using a variety of patterning –

symmetry/asymmetry

Methods ,Tools and Techniques (Craftsmanship)

• clay is carefully wedged/no air bubbles

• coils even, consistent, no cracking

• walls are an even thickness

• coils invisible where they are smoothed (interior)

• coils appear naturally placed, and untouched by human hand (plump)

• coils are strongly attached

• surfaces clean and free from score lines, nicks, crumbs, bumps and wobbles

• interior is completely smooth, top to bottom

• vessel dried in tact, no pieces fell off or coils separated

• underside of the base have your initials/name on it

Process and Assessment (as evidenced In sketchbook)

• (5+ ) 3D clay sketches show a variety of shape ideas for patterning and practice for attaching the coils together

• (4+) Research sketches for OVERALL SHAPE –

• sketchbook shows evidence of research of existing and historical works

•book titles and page #’s are noted

• (4+) 2D sketches depicting your chosen vessel shape with added designs (min of three)

• symmetrical or asymmetrical repeated patterns must be explored

• Personal assessment is filled out below (for Bisque Only)

Personal Assessment

a. Circle at least three areas listed in the rubric above that you feel you were most successful with

b. Defend the “WHY” of your success. Cite specific example

c. Discuss any comprehensive changes from your sketches to the final,

as “hands-on ideas” developed. Why did you make those changes?
