Course Description
This is a 2-credit semester course that introduces students to the magic of clay.
Students will have the opportunity to explore the properties of this medium by creating
both functional and decorative ware. Each student will experience the three basic hand
building methods, the basics of the throwing wheel, various surface decoration techniques,
glazing techniques and firing.
Rules of the Ceramics Room
1. Be Invested
—by being on time and “present,” staying focused on your work
and using your class time efficiently. Showing initiative will add
to the creativity of your work and is an important aspect of your.
2. Respect
– the space, tools, medium, yourselves and others. Many people
use this studio space, and it should be a safe environment to experiment
in and grow as an artist.
3. Ask for extra help
- when you need it! That’s what I am here for! You may find that working
extra time is necessary to meet a deadline. You are welcome to work after
school, just let me know.
4. Clean up
– is IMPORTANT for health and safety reasons, as well as being proper etiquette
for studio spaces. Clay dust accumulates quickly and we need to work together to
keep the room clean and safe. It is your responsibility to take care of your tools, your work,
your workspace, and storage area.
FYI:
Throwing of clay will result in one hour of hard labor, after school! Don’t even think about it!
Grading Policy
Your final grade will be based on:
70% • The 4 C’s
• your success in meeting specific Criteria for each assignment
• your level of Creativity in meeting the criteria
• your Craftsmanship
• your Concepts behind your work
20% • Your Process
• idea development, participation, studio care, investment,
class contributions, and effort
10% • Assessment
• tests, quizzes, self assessment
Tips:
Keep up with deadlines—late work will result in a lower grade for your project and may mean that
you will miss a firing deadline. Any work not handed in is averaged into your final grade as a zero.
Any on-time assignment may be reworked during the semester to receive a higher grade. In this
course deadlines are important—stay up to date or schedule time after school to catch up.
Absences: 6 or more unexcused absences will result in a loss of one credit. If you are absent you
will probably need to make up that studio time after school or during a study.
