Jasper has some awesome Latin students!!! Students from other Plano schools also did very well.
The convention, in honor of our roots in ancient Greek and Roman civilization, accommodates over 2,000 students from across the U.S. every summer for an entire week of colloquia, social events, competitions and awards in academics, theater, music, art, Olympics, and modern sports, culminating in a procession of toga-wearing students and teachers to a banquet and a night of entertainment, a comedy and talent show put on by students.
This was my 2nd national convention, and as I told people last year, I have never been in a situation where so many young people were all in one place, and were that talented, that creative, that intelligent, that cool, that enthusiastic, that fun, and that well-mannered and considerate. Both of my students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and have written to thank me. Now I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to Jasper High School and Plano ISD for supporting the Latin program and, in many cases, making it financially possible for these students (and myself) to participate in such events at the local, state, and national levels.
2003 JCL Competition Results: Jasper High School, Plano, TX.
2003 Area C (DFW area) & State JCL Conventions:
My first year as a Latin teacher, I had not the slightest idea what JCL was or what competitions were like. 7 students, all guys, volunteered to give it a try with me. At area, they came, they saw, they liked it, and then they decided they might even study in the future. They paid their way to the state competition.
Freshmen: Tommy Li – Greek history, Chen Huang – Roman history, Noah Biru – Grammar , Brian Lee – Mythology, Jimmy Hsu – Grammar, and Sophomores: Jonathan Wei – Jonathan and Jason Tsay tried to be a 2 person certamen team. Jason Tsay.
2003 National JCL Convention, NJCL San Antonio, Texas
Tommy Li – 2nd Greek history.
Completely clueless at area competing in Greek history, Tommy liked it and decided to study for state; he placed in the top 10 at state, then decided he rrrreally could do even better, so he begged his mom to let him go to the national convention. Because he wanted to go, I went too. I was so glad I did. Tommy studied and read all the books that summer, and placed 2nd at nationals.
Chen Huang also competed in Roman history and Roman life.
