My ethos is founded on the firm belief that learning about language and literature is crucial for the well-rounded development of students as creative communicators and active global citizens. This belief entails that students should be part of what Parker J. Palmer describes as a ‘community of truth’, focused on learning as a dynamic process of free inquiry. In this vibrant learning environment, students can become independent and innovative learners who are equipped for the challenges of the 21st century. With this in mind, my ethos incorporates the following three strands:
Autonomy
By encouraging self-directed learning, I aim to challenge students to harness their talents and unleash their full potential. They should not grow up to be cubicle drones. Instead they can foster an independent outlook, detect authorial biases, and sustain a critical perspective towards the issues that they encounter.
Creativity
Literature is driven by the creative use of language, and students can strive for novel means of expression to articulate their own original ideas. I seek to engage students in an inspiring and captivating learning environment, building their interest in language and igniting their literary imagination.
Empathy
As a role model for students, I aspire to embody the values of respect and empathy for all humanity regardless of differences in culture, race, religion, nationality or socio-economic background. Students can develop greater intercultural understanding and appreciation for others.
