Course code & Title: QCH527 Reflection in the Teaching and Learning of Secondary History
Course description:
This course gives the opportunity for student-teachers to link theory with practice. It emphasises the importance of reflection in teaching. Student-teachers will be given the opportunity to share their reflections on a particular lesson that they have been tasked to teach in the schools they have been posted to. They will also reflect on relevant aspects of their school practicum experiences.
Assessment:
REFLECTING ON A LESSON (individual work) – 100%
A specific history lesson will be chosen for reflection. Each student-teacher will plan a lesson focusing on the teaching of history as a discipline for any History class that they have been assigned to teach during the Practicum. The student-teacher will reflect on the taught lesson, suggest possible changes and explain how (and why) these changes may improve the quality of the specific lesson.
Instructions:
For the purpose of this assignment, you will plan a specific lesson to be taught to one of your assigned History classes during the Practicum. You will teach the particular lesson (with the focus on teaching for historical understanding) with either your CT or the NIE supervisor observing you. (Student-teachers in the JC track should select a tutorial session rather than a lecture period).
Next, you will reflect on how effective the lesson/tutorial was in achieving the stated goals. Evidence that can be used to demonstrate how you have met your lesson objectives may take various forms, for e.g. through an analysis of students’ sampled work, excerpts of statements students made as you monitor their understanding, or written comments made by the observer/s in your class.
You will then consider the strengths and weaknesses of the lesson, and consider the changes you may want to make to improve the quality of the lesson/tutorial. Justifications for these suggested changes would have to be made and appropriately explained. Reflection should include what has been taught to you about history as a discipline and the Learning Theories taught to you in your Education Studies courses. When you return to NIE for QCH527, you will be expected to present the lesson (and your reflection) to your classmates. (Refer to QCH527 Blackboard details for Assignment submission date)
Assignment content:
The assignment package that will be submitted must include the following:
· The original lesson plan
· The revised lesson plan (with changes to be made highlighted in bold)
· A write-up on an evaluation – and subsequent reflection – of the lesson
· The data used to support your evaluation/reflection on how the lesson went (for e.g. samples of students work, APT forms, etc.)
In writing up the evaluation/reflection, you may want to consider the following questions:
· Did you meet the learning outcomes? What went well (or not so well) in the lesson? How do you know this? What are your concerns for the lesson and yourself as a teacher? Why do you think this a concern? (You can use the APT form as a guide to consider the various teaching competencies. You may use the observations made by your CT or NIE supervisor as a basis for discussion).
· What improvements to the lesson can you make? What is the rationale for the suggested improvements? How do learning theories support the suggested revision?
· Short term and long term goals that you want to make to improve teaching and learning: How do you intend to go about achieving these goals?
The marking scheme for the assignment is as follows:
1 Lesson Plan 40%
2 Write up on evaluation & reflection 40%
3 Revised lesson plan 20%
