Endowment fund
A donation to the Jones SWCD Endowment fund is a gift that gives perpetually to help protect soil and water resources for generations to come.
Background
In November 2013, the commissioners of the Jones Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) established an endowment fund through an agreement with the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque as part of the Jones County Community Foundation. They raised more than $10,000 by the end of the year, and set a goal to increase the fund by $10,000 per year after that.
Purpose of Fund
The fund allows donors to make a contribution that will give perpetually. This is a forever fund, which means the principle is never touched. Only the earnings are allowed to be used to further the mission of the SWCD, which includes the protection and enhancement of the natural resources of Jones County by providing technical, educational, and financial assistance to the public.
How it Works
The Jones SWCD Endowment Fund money is pooled with all of the other endowment funds of the Community Foundation of Great Dubuque. This large sum of money is invested into safe and long-term investments. The fund grows from the interest on the investments. The money placed into an endowment fund is never touched, but the Jones SWCD Commissioners may choose to utilize the interest, up to 5% per year, to help fund operations and activities that promote the conservation and enhancement of Jones County’s natural resources.
Tax Advantages to Donors
When you make a donation to a tax-exempt organization, you can write the amount off of your taxes. The benefit of donating to an endowment fund is that you may receive an additional 25% credit through the Endow Iowa State Tax Credit program. The combination can save you up to 60% on your donation costs, depending upon your individual tax situation. For example, if you donate $100 to the fund, it may cost you as little as $40.
