Watershed Field Day

Watershed-What is It?

The 4th Grade classes from Aquin, Sacred Heart, St. Patrick Elementary and Olin Elementary had a Watershed field day at Central Park in Center Junction, Jones County, Iowa. The Jones County NRCS along with Michele Olson, the Jones County Conservation Board Naturalist, and other volunteers from AmeriCorps taught the students about Watersheds, Wetland Animals, Food chains, Energy flow, Soil Health, and the importance of Water Quality.

This station was a watershed model to show students how rainwater, pesticides, manure, and other pollutants can move through our waterways and cities.

This station let the students create their own watershed model using paper, markers, tape, and spray bottles with food coloring showing pesticides, manure, and rain water.

The Soil Health Tunnel taught the students about what soil is made up of. It also showed them the water cycle, phosporous cycle, nitogen cycle, and the soil food web.

The student also got to see an  active compost pile and learn about how to make one and why composting is beneficial.
