Demonstrating Aggregate Formation

The NRCS office staff visited the Midland Middle school, 5th graders in of March,2022.

A healthy aggregate is composed of sand, silt, clay and plant and fungal debris. A healthy and stable aggregate is important because it provides healthy root growth, good drainage, and overall good soil health. This aggregate formation can be disrupted by tillage and erosion.

In this demonstration we have silly string balls representing the soil particles (slit, clay and sand), the rope represents the plant roots, and the silly string represents the glues that hold the soil together. This glue consists of an accumulation of organic matter produced by microorganisms.
