- a graduate of Waseda University (1984)
- after graduation Kamanaka worked as an assistant documentary director for various companies including Group Gendai and Iwanami Productions
- 1990-1995, worked and studied in Canada and the United States, initially on a grant from Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs
- in the U.S. served as an activist for Paper Tiger
- upon her return to Japan in 1995 she began working as a freelance filmmaker
- has become known for her films on nuclear power and the effects of radiation.
