Some thoughts : On the darker self portraits, I intentionally wanted to work with dark shadows, hence the hats. I also went to using black gesso which gives a different starting point to each painting. I watched SKY ARTS PORTRAIT ARTIST OF THE YEAR on Youtube and learned a lot about mixing paint, and laying down a color and trying not to over-work the piece. Over-working is easy for me to do. I like the "impressionistic" style of painting...suggesting without painting every detail. The portrait of me and Piper was an experiment with a style that a friend did in college.
The last painting is of my grandmother Edith and her 3 sisters. I have been working on Ancestry and found this snapshot there. The poses really intrigued me. Because the snapshot is grainy, it gave me the freedom to paint in a more suggestive manner.
