Our October '11 Packing
Jackey Arrick, Cookie Crumb baker, provided us drawings from her day care. These put a smile on all those who saw them at our October packing – I’m sure the deployed men and women felt the same!
On the back of the pumpkin pics:
“My fingertips & palm made this for you
Happy Halloween & Thanks for all you do”
Can you guess what was used for the ghost!
Thank you Treynor bakers!
New Items in July Boxes
Glenis Leitch made over 200 small folded USA
flags (shown on left) with a special message which
were placed in our July boxes. Message reads:
A flag for your pocket so you
can always carry a piece of
home with you. Thank you
for serving our country and
defending our freedom!
Jennifer Plummer's Senior Girl Scout Troop 274 made 158 helmet coolers (shown right). Liners contain moisture pellets that expand when wet providing a relief from the heat.
Thank you Northeast Sodbusters 4H Group!
In March the Northeast Sodbusters 4H Group held a community breakfast
at the Irwin Community Building. Proceeds from the free will donation were matched by Thrivent and divided among the 4H group, Shelby County Adopt-a-Family and the Iowa Cookie Crumbs.
A check for $354.33, designated for postage costs, was presented to Abbie at our June packing. In addition, they brought 40 bags of cookies and travel size comfort items! The 4H group also sent cookies and supports troops from their communities deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. Their breakfast proceeds will be used for additional projects throughout the year. Thank you again for supporting the Iowa Cookie Crumbs!
Morgan Stanley Office Sends Cookies to the Troops
Jim O'Connor, Senior Vice President, Financial
Advisor, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC Global Wealth Management contacted Abbie last month.
His office, located in Des Moines, IA wanted to bake and send cookies to the troops - how could this be accomplished??
This was a first request of this nature and Abbie, as
leader of the Iowa Cookie Crumbs, was not sure.
As part of our affiliation with Jeanette Cram's Treat
the Troops national organization, the Iowa Cookie
Crumbs are bound by regulations and standards to
assure the security of the packages and recipients' names and addresses.
After several phone calls, working with Jeanette, the "Cookie Lady", and Abbie, their office baked and sent 84 dozen cookies and comfort items in June!
All Holiday Decorations Garage Sale
Our first shift reports and are ready for sales. Pictured Left to Right: Barb O'Connor, Gloria West, Peggy Albers, Carol Brockman, Abbie Crawford, Ruth Miller and seated Deann Over.
What an awesome response from our bakers and supporters! Smiling snowmen, jolly santas, heavenly angels, yards of greenery, piles of pumpkins and scary black cats, sweet, cuddly bunnies in a rainbow of pastel colors ---all stacked on tables for our customer’s viewing pleasure. The Garage Sale was on!
Blustery wind and cold temperatures were not enough to close our doors or keep the avid buyers away on Saturday, May 14th from the Iowa Crumbs Holiday Sale!
Our loyal Crumbs just kept showing up and dropping off their well loved decorations of years past until we finally had to stop accepting any more!
To all who braved the cold and worked so hard to price and sell our old treasures - thank you! We have some real shrewd retail Mamas!
Special thanks to John O’Connor for allowing us to use the location and arranging for the tables, Barb O’Connor for all of her hard work and organization, Gloria West for being the pricing queen, Ruth Miller who worked countless hours and the rest of the gang who showed up, worked hard and helped haul away the leftovers to local charities.
And we also have a new addition- a banner !!!
Thanks to Andrea Britton who designed and created the terrific banner shown at right!
Assisting Andrea was a family team effort of Larry and Elizabeth Britton along with Elaine Sasso. The banner showcased our project to not only garage sale attendees but was visible from the street!
Grand total from the garage sale, postage donation containers and raffle table cover donations - Over $900.00
The winning donation raffle ticket for the patriotic table cover (shown on the left) was drawn at the close of our garage sale and won by Kathy Symonds.
Winner of the other table cover (shown on the right) was Rosie Soloth. Rosie's name was drawn at our July 12th cookie packing.
Total amount raised from the ticket donations from both drawings was $155.00 !
Thank you Dorothy Thomsen for sharing your special talent and donating these items!
Thank you Cadette Troop 274!
Cadette Troop 274 Girl Scouts Abaigh Plummer, Kaitlyn Murphy and Kayla Thomas worked with the Iowa Cookie Crumbs to earn their Silver Award. The Silver Award is the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn.
Jennifer Plummer, troop leader is shown at left.
Scouts worked with the Iowa Cookie Crumbs to make candy wreaths, organized a neighborhood cookie baking event, helped with packing and shipping boxes to be sent to troops and sewed 135 silverware pouches to be included in the boxes.
Kirn Middle School life management teachers (and Cookie Crumb bakers) Debbie Gordon and Barb Demory helped with the sewing.

Included were special candy packets by Irene Gentile's Kirn middle school students, cookies baked by St. Albert's 8th Grade Leadership Academy students and Bethany Heights, cut out penguins by Jackey Arrick's day care kids (with a special hand-written verse) along with Valentine & St. Patrick's Day themed cookies, labels, candy and notes by bakers.

Special note: Irene Gentile's class has been supplying us with candy packets since 2008.
Here's the verse explaining the contents of:
A Valentine Survival Kit Just For You!!
A Chocolate Kiss to remind you that you are loved. Smarties to help you on those days you don’t feel so smart. A Starburst to remind you that you are a star in America’s eyes! A Snickers to remind you to take time to laugh. A piece of yarn to remind you that friendship ties our hearts together. A Gold Nugget to know that you are treasured. A Gold Coin to know you are worth your weight in gold. A tootsie roll to remind you of the important “role” you play in every Americans life. A Now or Later to know you are in our prayers now and forever. A Lifesaver because we'd be sunk with you. And lastly a smile to lift your spirits.
Several bakers commented that it didn't look like a lot of cookies - guess not when we packed 35,400 at our Holiday Cheer packing - there were a lot less tables for 9,540 cookies shown on the right!
Our January packing was Valentine themed.
Shown are some of the comfort items we enclosed with each box: a set of silverware
(in the black pouch), candy, nuts, deck of cards, pairs of socks, tooth brush and paste, lip balm, eye drops, hand sanitizer packets, black pouch), candy, nuts, deck of cards, pair of socks, tooth brush and paste, lip balm, eye drops,
hand sanitizer packets, manicure set, cotton balls, q-tips, cocoa and oatmeal packets.
Bakers Margie and Tiffany Espeland made individual sacks of candy wrapped in Valentine bags.
