March 10th, 2011
Well Mrs. Crawford, its 12:01 and the beginning of spring for Afghanistan.
Our nights couldn’t compete with Iowa’s (101), we get down to 15 degrees sleeping on cots (luckily and unlike last year in Helmand). Still in the middle of nowhere. Houses are made entirely of mud, dirt floors w/entry ways covered with our ponchos.
Now our rooms have cookies for a new scent!! (Just got cookies today – An awesome surprise!) There good too. My old Gunny (Michael Jacober) mentioned cookies right before we left.
Of course with all our operating day & night I totally forgot. But a thank you I can’t overlook. And you’re right a touch of home, a warm feeling knowing someone out there cares & supports us. This deployment tragedies are far less than last year (15 KIA); this year a very good friend and hopefully the last.
Iowa sounds amazing….cookies, corn and football (just teasing).
Thank you X 100 and I’ll promise to share some!

P.S. Thank you to all the 180 bakers too!
Note: Mike Jacober had also suggested real silverware. The military supplies plastic ware with their MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat). Mike told his parents there is nothing more frustrating than to open up an MRE and start to eat and the plastic breaks!
This soldier agreed:
Dear Abbie, Deann, Carol
First and foremost, THANK YOU and the 180 other Iowa Bakers for your support and that of Iowa ‘Cookie Crumbs’.
It is one thing for a person to say they support the troops, but for those who actually take the time out of their lives to help make ours a little better adds a little more truth to the words.
The cookies, candy, reading material and REAL silverware as well as some other things that were sent are greatly appreciated by all the soldiers. So much so, that when a package comes in the devouring begins almost immediately.
We all look forward to coming home and being with our families in the coming months. As that time draws near the items sent will help to remind us of things we will have to look forward to when we get home.
So with that, I again, want to thank you and Iowa Cookie Crumbs for your support and appreciation for the job we are doing here.
