Haifa Fornightly(Editor--Huzefa Mehta) 1st edition 28/10/92 ----------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the Haifa Fornightly!. This is the 1st edition of the Haifa Fornightly, brought to you from Haifa, Intel Israel. All opinions/comments/facts are those of the author(huzefa). BTW Angrezi is not my forte(nor is Hebrew or any other language) so excuse me for any spelling mistakes(not typos!) and grammatical errors. Left Bombay on Diwali night with yours truly dressed in a suit!(Even I can't believe it!) by Egypt Air. The flight was horrible(no seriously I mean it). I prefer travelling in unreserved second class dubba from Bombay to Delhi. The stewards and stewardesses thought they were doing us a big upkar while giving us anything. Reached Cairo safe. Had breakfast. Had a second mind about cancelling my flight to Tel Aviv and taking off for a day in Cairo for a touristy trip but lack of sleep and presence of my better half prevented me from doing so. After walking on the run way to cross the airport keeping in mind to give way to the planes on runways(the airport bus taking us to the terminal was not working!). Boarded plane and arrived safe at Tel Aviv. Immediately after landing at the immigration myself and Reena were whisked off to the police check where I found some more Indians there. They must be having a stricter check on Indians I guess. I just feel happy "ke humare aadmi charo taraf faile hue hai". After some few phone calls were told to continue with no problems at baggage and customs. Rented car from Hertz($75 per day!) and only stick shift. However with my newly acquired skills of driving a stick shift at Mauritius helped. We left for Haifa. A strange custom which I discovered later was that giving rides(lifts) in Haifa is very common. The streets have young junta in military dress asking for rides. They actually have stop corners at end of every streets so that junta could give rides to people waiting at those corners. Haifa is situated on Mt. Carmel with the houses on top of the mountain and none on the slope. We found our way to Dan Panorama a hotel situated at the top. The Dan group of hotel's are akin to our Taj group of hotel's. A couple of people are here on relocation from US(John, Greg, myself). Yesterday myself, Reena, John and Greg went for dinner on one of the Mt. Carmel Hills. Changed my car today to an automatic and having also a casette player. Being in Israel and not knowing Hebrew one can get completely isolated from the world. The English news occurs twice a day at odd hours so I am totally at lost as to what is going on! From what Bhatia tells me is that there is some tension in the Gaza area presently so shall venture there but maybe later on. Pliss to update me on Bush/Clinton & The other guy who are standing for elections! Not does it matter but when I was in India I was amazed on how up to date junta was on various standings on abortion and draft avoidance.
