A Beginners’ Guide to Understanding the Mind and Meditation

Abhidhamma is one of the most fascinating of Buddhist teachings. Understanding this teaching paints a clear picture of how our mind works, why we have stress in our lives and how we can come out of these stresses.

Over five nights U Hla Myint will discuss in clear and simple language the following topics:

Night One: History and overview of Abhidhamma.

Night Two: The fundamentals of Abhidhamma related to two types of truth, conceptual and ultimate.

Night Three: Understanding what “mind and matter” are and how they interact.

Night Four: Understanding the law of Dependent Origination.

Night Five: Understanding the law of Conditionality. This law explains how everything is related to every other thing. Nothing on earth takes place without cause and conditions.

U Hla Myint has 22 years of monastic training and a PhD (Bhivansa) in Buddhist Studies and Pali language. A former assistant meditation instructor at Mahasi Meditation Center in Burma he remains a close disciple, translator and teaching assistant of Sayadaw U Pandita. He has translated numerous Burmese dhamma books and dhamma discourses and has authored Meditation Lectures, Conditional Relations in Daily Life (from the abhidhamma) and Pali Language Lessons for English readers. For many years, he has taught the Theravada Tradition to the students of the Antioch College Buddhist Studies Program in Bodh Gaya, India. He resides part-time in San Jose, CA and Pyin Oo Lwin, Burma.

Optional Meditation Practice

Palolo Zen Center, 2747 Waiomao Road

Wednesday July 31^th through Friday August 2^nd, 2013

9-11:30 AM and 7-9 PM

And Saturday August 3^rd, 9 AM- 4 PM

As an opportunity to bring the teaching into practice, with morning sessions of Vipassana meditation, evening sittings and Dhamma discussions, ending with a day-long retreat.

Cost: To encourage the dana (generosity) practice, these events are freely offered to all. In order to help share the organizing cost, including venues and air fare, which has been reduced by some advanced donations, we suggest the following optional donations to the organizers:

-$90 for the entire program July 25^th - August 3^rd.

-or $50 for U Hla Myint portion, $ 30 for 3 days/evenings with Grahame, (or $12/day for any of the teaching above), and $30 for the day-long retreat.

-Additional dana to the teachers (who receive no honorarium) would also be appreciated.

Note:

-Please be aware that parking is limited at Bodhi Tree Meditation Center. Overflow parking can be found on streets in the adjacent neighborhood. You may bring food, and eat on the lanai on the ground level prior to the presentation. (Meditation will be upstairs in this period.)

Please park in the upper parking lot at the Palolo Zen Center. Don’t use cell phones on the campus. If you need to make a call, please go out to the perimeter of the campus. You may do walking meditation in the corridors or outside while you wait for sessions to begin.

Potluck, Tuesday July 30^th, 6:30-8:00 PM, Hawaii-Loa-Ridge Club House ("The Club"), Pu'uikena Drive at Kaihiau loop (hosted by the Huynhs)
