Cabot Civil War Monument 300 men from Cabot were eligible to serve in the Civil War. 145 volunteered. Most served in units that mustered in St. Johnsbury: the 16th, 3rd, and 4th Vermont Regiments. 45 died in the war. Many survivors were injured. 17 who died are named on the monument on the Common. Others were not known when the monument went up.

NB: Mary Lance, Edwin Morrill's fiancee, lived out her life as a recluse in Cabot village. In early Aug. 1864, a service was held for Edwin and Abel Morrill. Edwin was captured at the Battle of Weldon Railroad in Virginia. He was shot and mortally wounded trying to escape. Abel, acting adjutant in the 3rd Vermont, was killed at the Wilderness. After the war, Edwin's remains were reburied in Cabot. Abel's body was never found.
