Stick handling & Skill Development

1. McDavid Skill Full Ice Circuit:

1. Players skate various patterns (change up after a 2-3 cycles) through McDavids

Examples - figure 8 forwards,

- push puck under & pivot around to backwards around front of McDavids, then backwards to

back end before pivoting back to forwards to next McDavids

2. Players perform toe drag or move around attack triangle, then shoot on goalie

3. Coach spots puck. Players work on various starts (V-start, Cross-over start). Players pick up puck and pass back and forth down the ice. Note: Remind players to switch sides each time. Progression: Forwards and backwards skating/passing

4. Finish with a shot if there is a 3rd net. Otherwise, Players return to start of opposite line they were in previously.

2. McDavid's Full Ice Skill Circuit #2

1. Player skates circle with puck and makes pass to coach in motion and continues around circle pivoting to backwards at top. Coach returns pass as player is skating backwards around circle. At bottom, player pivots to forward, makes a give and go pass to coach.

2. Player skates pattern around cones (modify/ progress as see fit), drives wide into zone, makes move on a attack triangle, then shoots before hashmarks.

3. Player skates various patterns through McDavid's (change up throughout drill).

4. Player makes move on attack triangle (or coach) and shoots from hash marks. Player then joins other line.

3. Full Ice Horseshoe with Variations

1st Variation: Standard Full Ice Horseshoe

2nd Variation: Add give and go pass to coach at neutral ice

3rd variation: Add defenders to create a one-on-one down the ice (first pressure by D without trying to take away puck then full one-on-one). Switch F’s and D’s after a 3-4 rounds each.

4. End to End Rush Circuit

Players complete the circuit as shown. When players drive the net, they either shoot in stride and player at net looks for rebound/tip or player can make the pass to teammate then drive the net for a rebound. The player that shoots takes the place of the player in front of the net.

5. Speed Battle for the Puck

6. Drill Drive

Drive Drill Explanation:

1. (F) makes give and go with (Co)

2. (D) can’t leave until (F) has received the pass

3. 1 on 1 to the net

Option: Progress to 2 on 1

7. Power Turn Give & Go:

1. Power turn through the cones

2. Give & Go with Coach

3. Drive Wide, and Attack the Net

8. Show-off Circuit Full Ice

9. Atom 2016 Tech Skate- 3 Skill Stations

Station 2 Drill:

Keys:

· Control puck while skating through pylons

· Cross over's and tight turns

· Full stop and then quick acceleration with the puck

Steps

1. Skate through pylons while controlling puck using crossovers and tight turns

2. When player gets to the 7th pylon come to a full STOP

Add Progressions/ Variations: Pass puck around cone to self on other end of cone as they make the tight turn

Station 3 Drill (set cones up for both sides)

Keys:

· Ability to make quick transitions from backwards to forwards and forwards to backwards

· Maintain control of the puck

· Give and receive pass while in motion

· Shoot puck in motion

Steps

1. Players start backwards and pivot around 1st pylon to forwards

2. Player makes a give and go pass with coach

3. Transition to backwards around 2nd pylon and get return pass from coach

4. Transition to forwards around 3rd pylon and finish with shot on net

10. Forward Skill Circuit Half Ice

1. F1 starts by jumping over stick with crossover, then receives a pass to outside from coach. F1 returns pass then crosses over stick going other direction. F1 again receives and returns pass. F1 makes final cross-over jump over stick takes pass and goes in for shot at hash marks

2. F1 then receives a pass from F2 heads up ice either chipping puck off wall past obstacle or make a move around.

3. F1 makes give and go pass to coach.

4. F1 moves past obstacle to outside (wide zone entry), curls around lower obstacle towards boards before cutting to net making move through final obstacle.

4. F1 shoots and then moves to the F2 line. F2 after passing moves to F1 line.
