1 on 1 Drills

1. 1F/1D Breakout to 1 vs 1

Place players as shown. Have F1 skate into the defending zone and dump puck behind net. Have D1 skate to pick up the puck for breakout. D1 must pass tape to tape to F1. Both exit into the neutral zone and D1 controls gap while F1 pick up speed. F1 turns to enter back into the Offensive zone 1 on 1.

5 minutes at each side.

2. Finish Half Ice Drill with 1 on 1 Progression

1. on whistle, (D) skates up to blue line and pivots backward

2. after the pivot, (C) dumps a puck into the corner

3. (D) picks it up and initiates a breakout using the misdirection

4. (F) times the play and swings through to receive a board-side breakout

5. (F) carries puck out of zone and re-enters on a 1 on 1 with (D)

3. Burkart Regroup

1. (F) passes to (D) and swings

2. D to D pass, then back to the Forward

3. (F) receives pass, then executes another regroup with other set of defensemen

4. (F) attacks 1 on 0

Variation: have the (D) play the (F) 1 on 1. If 5/6 D - Move D through a rotation. After D plays F he waits to side with F. D not playing F, moves into that spot for next rotation to play F.

4. Whip 1 on 1

The focus of this drill is to contain the forwards from a tough situation. The set up of this drill puts the defense at a dis-advantage. Set up the drill as shown in the diagram. The spacing of the players may need to be adjusted after you run a few reps so that defense are coming out of their transition equal with the forwards. The forwards should have a good speed when they receive the puck and drive to the outside towards the near post. The goal for the defense is to try and contain the forwards to the outside and not let the forwards have a good scoring chance. If the defense gets beat they should learn how to open up and sprint to the post to try and cut off the forward before they get to the near post.

variation: coach makes pass to the forward as they transition around the cone and attack the zone.

1v1 Wide D

This drill is a shooting drill into a full ice 1v1. It is run out of both ends simultaneously. The drill starts with the Forward passing the puck from the goal line to a Defenseman waiting at the blue line. A second D is waiting in the middle of the ice. The puck moves D to D while the F comes up around the circle into the mid slot area. The mid-D walks the puck while the board D sprints to the middle. The puck moves D to D again for a shot with the F in front for a tip or screen. Coach in the corner then gives a puck to the F who attacks the D who started in the middle of the ice. This is a full ice 1v1 that is played out until a whistle. On the whistle, the next group goes.

Forwards work on protecting the puck on the rush, using their speed to beat the defensemen and being creative in a 1v1 situation. They should look to try to take advantage of D who cross over or attack the open triangle. Defensemen need to have quick feet, avoiding crossovers and maintaining a good defensive stick. Gaps are critical – you can require the D to wait until the defensive blue line to attack the puck carrier.

6.SIMPLE BREAKOUT 1 ON 1

Simple Breakout 1 on 1

This drill starts with a simple breakout. The forward will dump the puck below the goal line and then skate to the boards and open up for a breakout pass. The defense will start on the dot, skate up a couple of strides, then transition back to retrieve the puck dumped in by the forward. The defense will "wheel" around the net and make a breakout pass to the forward. The forward will retrieve the pass and then skate towards the other end and take on the other defense in a 1 on 1. The defense on each side will make the breakout pass (with the emphasis on a good first pass) and then skate around the cone, close the gap, and take on the forward from the other end on a 1 on 1 situation.

7. EAGLES HALF ICE 1 ON 1

Eagles Half Ice 1 on 1

The forwards all line up in the corner without pucks. The defense line up just inside the forwards with the pucks as shown in the diagram. To start the drill F1 skates up along the boards and receives a pass from D1. F1 receives the pass, skates around the circle and takes a shot on net. F1 transitions around the bottom of the other circle so they are always facing the play. After F1's shot, D1 takes a puck and skates around the net to give F1 a breakout pass. F1 receives the breakout pass and skates up near center ice and around the cone or tire closest to the red line. D1 follows the play and transitions around the cone closest to the blue line to play F1 in a 1 on 1 back towards the net.

NOTE: Transition See Half Ice Eagle 2 on 1

8. Nashville Slot Protection to 1 on 1

On whistle, both ends start at same time.

1. D1 passed to F then plays the F to and at front of net

2. F passes back to D2 then drives the net for screen/tip/rebound.

3. D2 shoots from point, then skates down towards top of circle before pivoting and playing the 1 on1 down ice

4. After shot comes in from point, D1 and F battle for any rebounds, then F curls up ice and picks up breakout pass from coach.

5. F plays 1 on 1 down ice with D2

Progression: 2 on 1

After D1 makes pass to F1, F1 carries puck up wall and cycles puck back to F2

F1 drivea net and D1 defends

F2 passes puck back to D2, then heads to net

D2 walks line and shoots from middle

F1 and F2 regroup for and take breakout pass from Co and head up ice on a 2 on 1 on D2
