The charisma and supremacy of lord Jagannath have been proved by thousands of devotees once and again.

Adi shankara ,born on the shukla panchami day of the month of Baisakha (788 christ. Era), was instrumental in reviving hinduism from the then ill-struck condition.During his tour to popularise adwaitavad bhagaban shankar reached odisa and the thakur king welcomed him. Shankar blessed the king and entered the sreemandir. He made a puja there and asked about absence of the deity -pratima inside the temple.the sevakas told that kalajabana destroyed the pratima. The navikamala of the pratima was saved and kept at a secret place but it could not be traced out later .

Shankar assured the sevakas that he would find out the ratnapeti(the box with the soul of the pratima) containing the nabhibramha and requsted them to continue the normal puja there. All the sevakas were overjoyed to hear this. Shankar sat in deep meditation (dhyana) and after some time told them that the ratnapeti is kept under the earth towards the north side of the longest banyan tree on the east bank of the chilika lake. He started towards the spot with thousands of followers. The ratnapetika was traced out and brought to shreekhetra in a grand procession. The bigraha was established and abhisek was conducted. Shankar provided the code of all rituals for puja of the three deities. Thus the jagannath cult got life by the great shankaracharya.

Jai jagannath.
