I primi ad occuparsi della ricerca scieitfica sulla mente e sulla coscienza (intesa cvome consapevolezza) furono gli anestesisti che per loro attivit’ professionale si occupano proprio di togliere (induzione di sonno farmacologico)) e ridare la coscienza (risveglio dalla narcosi e dal coma). Ci si chiede: può la fisica aiutarci a capire il meccanismo che produce, nel cervello, lo stato mentale cosciente? Due scienziati, Roger Penrose e Stuart Hameroff, stanno, in questo senso, proponedo nuove importanti vie di ricerca impiegando i principi e il potente formulario matematico della fisica quantistica. In particolare secondo questi due studiosi, il “citoscheletro” che costituisce una specie di sistemi di tunnel all’interno delle cellule del sistema nervoso lungo i quali si trasmettono le informazioni operative, sensoriali e motorie che costituiscono le vie della coscienza, viaggerebbero secondo i principi della fisica quantistica. Nel Novecento il Premio Nobel John Eccles (http://www.ecclesfoundation.org/) dedicò molto lavoro a questo problema e propose la teoria degli psiconi. Tuttavia questa teoria non venne mai approvata dalla comunità scientifica internazionale.

The first to concern themselves with scientific research on the mind and consciousness were anesthesiologists. Because of their professional activity, they were occupied with, in fact, the taking away of (through the induction of pharmacological sleep) and restoring consciousness (the reawakening from narcosis and coma). One asks oneself: can physics help us understand the mechanism that produces the conscious mental state in the brain? In this sense, two scientists, Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff, are proposing important new paths of research through the use of the principals and powerful mathematic formulary of quantum physics. In particular, according to these two experts, the cytoskeleton constitutes a kind of system of tunnels inside the cells of the nervous system. Operative, sensorial and motor information is transmitted according to the principles of quantum physics through these tunnels, which constitute the pathways of consciousness. In the 20th century, the Nobel Prize winnder, John Eccles (http://www.ecclesfoundation.org/), dedicated a great deal of work to this problem, and proposed the theory of "psicons," which, however, was never approved by the international scientific community.
