In February 2010, Google inc. released a new feature integrated into Gmail, their leading free product, called Google Buzz. Presented as a tool for sharing and conversation, it interacts well with YouTube, Picasa, Reader, and many other free Google products. The blogosphere had a hard time positioning itself about Buzz, many rumors were born about it also, as a lot of enthusiastic users had used it to build a brand new international Social Network.
Of course, Google Buzz is not one to compete with the Social Media monsters that are Facebook or Twitter and may not want to. It's basic concepts are so different: unlike other Social Networks, Google Buzz doesn't have a dedicated site, it's built directly into Gmail. It does however provide a full API for developers to be able to build their own "3rd party" applications to interact with Buzz.
Google has dedicated a special Buzz Development Team within the Gmail Team. They are very responsive on bugs, comments and feedback and have already pushed several upgrades to the tool on an as-requested basis.
The idea of Going Buzz (goingbuzz.net) came from two apparent findings:
- Google Buzz may be, as any Google product, easy and simple to use. However the power of those small features and the complexity of the whole binding is hard to handle for those who are not technical or the elders.
- In the Buzz flow itself, one could read posts from peers poorly reviewing and spreading rumors. Whilst others from "almost fanatical” supporters have found Buzz to be the perfect alternative/addition to their online presence.
Even on the geekiest site, it is an old habit to welcome and provide support to the newbies.
Going Buzz is all about it: reaching out, pulling and helping.
Wishing all a nice Buzz experience and a growing community.
If you have writing skills, some time and the will to help, new contributors are welcome.
