Hilda Davidson was born on the 19th July 1897 at Lower Hutt. Her family lived in Masterton from 1903 for a few years and then by 1914 they had moved to 76 John Street, Grey Lynn and in 1919 they were in 31 Hackett Street Grey Lynn. Hilda became very good friends with Ginny Bruce, Ginny lived near Adam and Harriet Girven in Sackville street. After the end of WW1 (in about 1920) Hilda had met Evan Girven.
Hilda fell in love with his dark eyes and they were married on the 18th July 1921 at St Davids Church in Kyber Pass Road in Auckland. In their early married years lived with Molly Moyle (Evans sister who had become bereaved in 1918) in Sackville Street. They went on to live at 22 Webber street, (initially called Wilson street, by 1946 it was called Webber street), they had a house built for them there but the construction was delayed due to a dispute with the builder.
Their eldest son Wallace Evan William (Wally) Girven was born in Sackville street and then Ray their second son born in 1925 and Shirley their daughter (born 1933) were both born in Webber Street home. Evans mother Harriet Rebecca Girven also lived at 22 Webber Street in her last year, Hilda was looking after her until she died on the 19th June 1929. Evan sadly died from the effects of anaesthetic after an operation in 1960, Hilda lived on in Webber street until her death in 1992. Ray Girven had looked after his Mum and he lived there until 2018, shortly before his death.
Wally Girven recorded some memories of Hilda (his mother), Ngaire recorded some memories with Wally shortly before his death in 1998 and I recorded memories with Ray in 2011. I have added these memories to this page. I have the audio recordings, I will them add later.
