Page 32 - Girvin Family in New Zealand

There was a similarly named Girven Family in New Zealand, they confusingly lived near Hikuragi and in the Grey Lynn area. Even more confusingly when William John Girvin died in 1931 he was mistakenly called William John Girven on his death certificate. I have traced some of this family to double check these facts. The family would seem to be William John Girvin as Father and Samuel plus William Adamson as his two sons.

The two early settlers were William John Girvin and Samuel Girvin, they were listed as settlers at Raupekapeka in the 1900 Electoral Return. Then in 1905 we have again have William John Girvin and Samuel Girvin listed as settlers, plus William Adamson as a labourer. By the 1911 Electoral Return we have William John Girvin and John Girvin listed as bushmen at Tapuhi in Northland. By 1914 William John is a settler and John still a bushman, both still at Tapuhi. By 1919 William John Girven and William Adamson are living in 3rd Avenue Kingsland, in Grey Lynn.

From the Birth marriage and death records, William John Girven died in 1931, he was aged 78 so he was born in about 1853. Samuel Girvin married Julia Maher Mitchell in 1907, the certificate number is 1907/5456. Then William Adamson Girvin married Maud Evelyn Higgins in 1912, the certificate is 1912/5391. William Adamson Girvin is lised as living in Grey Lynn in the Electoral Returns for 1914, 1928, and 1954, William Adamson Girven died in 1956. Samuel and Julia Maher Girven are listed 1928 thorugh to 1954 as living farming in Towai, Northland, Samuel died in 1955 and Julia Maher Girvin in 1974..

William John Girvin born abt 1853 died 1931 aged . His children were born abroad.

Samuel Girvin born abt 1879 died 1955 aged 76 years.. Married Julia Maher Mitchell in 1907.

Samuel had a child called William John born in 1912 but he died in 1912 aged only 8 months

William Adamson Girvin born abt 1880 died 1956 aged 76 years Married Maud Evelyn Higgins in 1912.

William Adamson Girven had a child called Thomas William Girvin, he was born 23rd October 1913 and died in 2001.

I have since found out more information on Ancestry.com, the family came from Ballybracken in Northern Ireland, William John Girvins wifes name was Martha Adamson, she died in Aucklnad in 1888, probably during the birth of her 5th child.
