It would seem that in the early 1910's, possibly in 1912 as a resettlement program due to shortage of work in the coalfields, quite a few families moved from Hikurangi to Grey Lynn in Auckland, to live in new homes in Sackville Street. From my Grandfathers Evan Girven war records he enlisted from 46 Sackville Street in 1914, Adam and Harriet his parents were living there then. Looking at the addresses in Sackville street in the census returns is very revealing, Wendy Brewer (nee Ready) and Sharon Jones (nee Lee -Wangford family)
Adam and Harriet # 46
Richard William and Bethia Smith Russell Frazer @ #48 also (Martha Molly)
George Evan @ #52
My Nana Elizabeth Jane and Pa Michael James Ready lived at # 62 this was Pa's Dad's last known address as well #62
The Weir family have also spoken of houses in the same street. Looks like it should of been renamed Girven Street !
Sharon Jones (nee Lee) also said:
I too have relatives on the Lee side who lived in Sackville St. Mum's Girven Grandparents (Adam and Harriet) lived next door to one of Dad's (Leonard Lee) aunties, (maybe #44) and Mum was passed over the fence to this auntie/neighbour for a cuddle as a baby. It was her first contact with Dad's side.
Sharon also said that later that George William Lee and ?? (parents of Leonard Lee who married Madge Wangford)) lived nearby in Brown Street, Ponsonby.
