Adam worked at the (Kawakawa and maybe Hikurangi) Coal Mine at the Pit Head, he surpervised the minehead workings and looked after the Stationary Steam Engine. There are newspaper articles listing his certificates, several of his sons also worked as stationary Steam Engine drivers and later during WW1 they also worked for the railways cleaning Steam engines. The examiner said when he examined Evan Girven (Adams son) for competency that he did not need to check him for competancy, seeing that he was Adams son the examiner knew he had been trained throroughly.

The two files for 1896 and 1897 are too large for me to upload to this website, but the section above from page 221 gives the relevant section on Adam Girven.
