The main source for my research into the ancient Tilghman-Tillman line comes from the Stephen F. TILLMAN book, "Spes Alit Agricolam".

Had two known sons: Nicholaus and William

4. Nicholaus TILGHMAN

Had two known sons: William and Richard

5. Richard TILGHMAN

Had three known sons: Nicholas, Thomas and William

6. Nicholas TILGHMAN (???? - bef DEC 1591)

Had a daughter Margery and two sons Nicholas and Thomas.

Nicholas TILGHMAN died before 13 DEC 1591 in Faversham, Kent, England.

7. Thomas TILGHMAN

Died in Sussex, England.

8. Nicholas TILGHMAN

He married Jane BENSON and they had two known children: Christopher and John.

9. Christopher TILGHMAN (???? - bef 1619)

He married Anna SANDERS and they had six known children. Christopher TILGHMAN died before 1619, probably in Selling Parish, Kent, England.

The known children of Christopher and Anna TILGHMAN were:

10. Christopher TILGHMAN (c1600 - ????)

Born about 1600 in Selling Parish, Faversham Hundred, Kent, England, Christpher is the immigrant ancestor of our line of Tilghman/Tillmans in America.

Christopher married Ruth DEVONSHIRE, probably before leaving England. They had three known children.

Christopher immigrated to Virginia on 9 MAY 1635. He died in James City County there, sometime after 1650.

11. Gideon TILGHMAN (c1643 - MAY 1720)

Born about 1643 in Accomack County, Virginia to Christopher TILGHMAN and Ruth DEVONSHIRE. Gideon married Margaret MANEN/MANEUX/MANAX on 15 FEB 1682 in Princess Anne County, Maryland. They had 8 children. Gideon wrote his will on 7 MAY 1720 in Somerset County, Maryland, listing himself as a planter. His will went to probate less than 2 weeks later on 19 MAY 1720.

12. John Stephen TILGHMAN (1689 - bef 1733)

Born to Gideon TILGHMAN and Margaret MANEN/MANEUX/MANAX in Somerset County, Maryland. He married first to Ann PITTS before 22 APR 1715, and then secondly married Rosannah TAPPER about 1716. John had six children. He wrote his will on 26 MAR 1733 and it went to probate on 16 JUN 1733.

13. John TILGHMAN (2 FEB 1732 - 1830)

Born 2 FEB 1732 to John Stephen TILGHMAN and Rosannah TAPPER in Somerset County, Maryland.

John married Sarah EGGARTON about 1774 and they had seven children. Sarah's parents are not known. She was born between 1750-1760 and died in 1845, aged about 90 years.

John served as a Private in the 2nd North Carolina Battalion, 10th Regiment during the Revolutionary War. After the War, he served as a State Representative during the NC Provincinal Congress.

14. Joseph Isaiah TILLMAN (6 JAN 1792 - 5 MAY 1845)

Born the youngest of seven children to John and Sarah (EGGARTON) TILGHMAN on 6 JAN 1792 in Jones County, NC. The family surname seems to have changed spelling in this generation.

Joseph TILLMAN served as an Ensign in the 5th Georgia District Militia during the War of 1812. He operated a toll bridge on the Canoochee River, and served as a State Senator from Tattnall County, GA.

Married Catherine CHEWNING on March 17th, 1816 by James TILLMAN in Bulloch County, GA. Catherine was born 23 FEB 1796 in Jones County, NC to Samuel CHEWNING and Mary JACKSON. See the CHEWNING Family page for more details about Catherine's ancestry.

Catherine died 10 SEP 1830 in Tattnall County, GA and is buried in the Tillman Cemetery, near the Canoochee River. On 2 JUN 1831 Joseph married Cassandra Carter EVERETT (b. 12 SEP 1812 Bulloch County).

Joseph died 5 MAY 1845 at age 53 in Tattnall County, GA and is buried in the Canoochee family cemetery. Following his death, Cassandra TILLMAN moved to Thomas County, GA where she died on 4 OCT 1864 at age 52.

The children of Joseph and Catherine TILLMAN were:

  1. Daughter - born between 1816-1820, Bulloch County, GA
  2. James M. TILLMAN - b. 8 OCT 1817, Tattnall County, GA, he married Sarah EVERETT on 3 SEP 1840 there. James served in Company B, 2nd Georgia Infantry during the War and died 15 SEP 1870.

  4. Sarah TILLMAN - born between 1818-1820, sources give differing dates. Sarah married James Perry COLLINS (the son of Josiah and Susannah (SUMMERLIN) COLLINS) on 11 AUG 1835 in Tattnall County, GA and had 5 children. She died 19 MAR 1887 in Tattnall County.
  5. Henry TILLMAN - b JUL 1820, Bulloch County, GA, married Jane WILLIAMS in 1841 and had 8 children. Henry died 22 MAR 1877 in Perry, Taylor County, FL.
  6. Susan TILLMAN - b. OCT 1822 Bulloch or Tattnall County, GA, m. Abraham D. EASON.
  7. son TILLMAN - born between 1825-1830, died before 1840.

The children of Joseph and Cassandra TILLMAN were:

  1. Eliza Everett TILLMAN b. 11 MAY 1834 Tattnall County, she married Charles E. GROOVER and John G. REYNOLDS, and died 30 JAN 1910.
  2. Cassandra TILLMAN - b. 15 JAN 1837 in Tattnall County, she married M. J. CULPEPPER, and died 27 JUL 1903.
  3. Joseph Isaiah TILLMAN, Jr. - b. 26 AUG 1839 Tattnall County, married Sarah Jessie "Sallie" EVERETT on 5 JAN 1859 in Thomas County, GA.
  4. John TILLMAN - b. 4 APR 1845 in Tattnall County, he married Mary Lawson WYCHE and Charlie GAULDEN.

15. Catherine Ann "Katie" TILLMAN (c. 1820 - APR 1895)

Born the 3rd of 7 children of her parents Joseph TILLMAN and Catherine CHEWNING, Katie was the third of eleven total children of her father.

Katie married William D. ROGERS on 13 JUN 1837 in Tattnall County. They had 3 children before William died:

  1. Joseph Tillman ROGERS - b. 1838, he married Sarah Eliza HOLLAND and had 3 children before dying at the Battle of Gettysburg, PA on 2 JUL 1863.
  2. Sarah Ann ROGERS - m. Matthew COLLINS (son of Josiah and Susannah (SUMMERLIN) COLLINS), and had 8 children.
  3. William C. ROGERS - bc. 1840

Katie (TILLMAN) ROGERS became a widow at about age 27 in 1847. She then married Berrian COLLINS (son of Josiah and Susannah (SUMMERLIN) COLLINS) on 5 JAN 1848 in Tattnall County, GA. They had seven children. Their family, and Berrian's ancestors are detailed on the COLLINS family page.
