Not much is known about my COBB family. Any information adding to this line would be appreciated.

OF INTEREST: James and Janet COBB of Washington County, GA

I am curious to find out more about the family of James Cobb who married to Janet and are enumerated in the 1850 Hancock County, GA census (as was Clemmons Cobb and his family). The children of this family are of the right age to be siblings to my Clement Cobb.

Their children were:

  1. Mary Ann Cobb - b. 1826
  2. Caroline Cobb - b. 1827
  3. William Cobb - b. 1828
  4. See how nicely Clement Calvin Cobb b. 1829 would fit?
  5. Elizabeth Cobb - b. 1834
  6. Joseph C. Cobb - b. 1838
  7. Sarah G. Cobb - b. 1838
  8. Alfred W. Cobb - b. 1849 Hancock County, GA

1. Clement or Clemmons Calvin Cobb, (1829 - 1863)

Clemmons Cobb was born about 1829, possibly in Washington County, GA. He married Susan HAWKINS there on 21 DEC 1848. She was the daughter of Drury HAWKINS and Artemisia COOK.

Clemmons served in Company D, 59th GA Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He fell out during the march to Gettysburg, and died 15 JUN 1863 at the Exchange Hotel, Orange County, VA, which was serving as a Confederate Hospital. My great-grandmother was born 6 months after his death.

Susan (Hawkins) Cobb died 16 FEB 1913 in Washington County, GA.

The children of Clemmons and Susan Cobb were:

  1. William J. COBB - bc. 1850 Hancock County, GA, d. JUN 1859 from "worms" in Washington County, GA
  2. James Thomas COBB - b. 4 JUN 1851 Washington County, d. 23 FEB 1919 Washington County; he m. Elizabeth "Bettie" HOLTON 11 MAR 1875 Washington County (8 children)

2. Mattie Nora COBB (1864 - 1935)

Mattie Cobb was born 10 JAN 1864 in Hancock County, GA, 6 months after her father died in the Civil War. News of his death was not reported in the Washington County newspapers as the news from Gettysburg was more devastating. Mattie married 20 DEC 1883 to George Washington HOLTON and had 13 children. See their family on the Holton Family page.
