1. Richard CHISHOLM, (c1613 - c1670)

Richard CHISHOLM also appears in records as Richard CHEESOME. He was bc. 1613 in London, Middlesex, England. Richard arrived in the American Colonies by 1643 when William Batt used the headright of Richard Cheesome to acquire 250 acres of land in York County, Virginia, lying along the banks of the North River, which flows into Mobjack Bay (today's Mathews County, VA)

Richard CHISHOLM married Margaret ISHAM, daughter of Roger ISHAM and Grace MADDISON, in Virginia, date unknown. Richard died circa 1670 in Lancaster County, VA.

Richard and Margaret CHISHOLM had three known children:

2. James CHISHOLM, (c1657 - 1698)

James CHISHOLM/CHEASUM was bc 1657 in New Kent County, VA. In the late 1670s James left Virginia for Maryland - Bacon's Rebellion was brewing nearby, and may have caused him to go to Maryland.

James Abigaile BELL 31 Aug 1678 possibly in Somerset County, MD.

James was back in Virginia by 1680 when he was appointed Justice of the Peace for Lancaster County, VA. He married second to Anne CARTER, daughter of John CARTER, date unknown. See the CARTER Family Page for Anne's ancestry.

James CHISHOLM wrote his will 11 Feb 1698 at St. Mary's County, MD; his will was drawn in Maryland because he had land there. He died before 8 May 1698 at St. Mary's County, MD.

James had two wives and four known children by them:

  2. James CHISUM - bc 1683, he was employed as secretary, rent collector, and "entry-taker" for Gov. Alexander Spotswood, and for Sir Thomas Fox. James Chisum was founder of the KY Chisholms.
  3. William CHISUM - bc 1685.

3. John CHISUM, Sr., (1681 - 1734)

John CHISUM, Sr. was born 1681 in Lancaster County, VA. He married Elizabeth BRADLEY, daughter of Thomas BRADLEY, Jr., date unknown. John CHISUM died 1734 in Caroline County, VA.

John and Elizabeth CHISUM had three known children:

  3. James CHISUM - bc 1708.

4. John CHISUM, Jr., (1704 - 1792)

John CHISUM, Jr. was born 1704 in King William County, VA, and he married Ellender GILLINGTON, daughter of Nicholas GILLINGTON and Eleanor ECHOLS, circa 1730 at St. Margaret's Parish, Caroline County, VA.

John and Ellender CHISUM are supposed to have had 21 children, though all their names are not known. Probably some of them died in childhood. There are twelve children for whom we have names:

  1. Captain John CHISUM - bc 1732 St. Margaret's Parish, Caroline County, VA. He was a woodsman, "land viewer", and army scout or spy. He helped Governor John Sevier organize Washington County, TN around 1777. He died after 1806 at Sparta, White County, TN, at the home of his brother Elijah Chisum.

  3. Elizabeth CHISUM - bc 1736 Caroline County, VA, she married John ESTES Jr., son of Moses and Elizabeth ESTES, before 1772. She died before 1796 at Logan County, KY.
  4. Anna CHISUM - bc 1738 Amelia County, VA, she married Ambrose MAY.
  5. Absalom CHISUM - b 1740 Orange County, VA. He died at Logan County, KY.
  6. Adam CHISUM - b 1742 Orange County, VA, dc 1817 Union County, SC.
  7. Elijah CHISUM - b 1744 Amelia County, VA, he married Lucy CLAIBORNE circa 1772, and died in 1818.
  8. Isham CHISUM - bc 1746 Amelia County, VA, he married Miss RUSSELL. He died at Christian County, KY.
  9. Chloe CHISUM - bc 1746 Amelia County, VA. She married John MAY in 1777.
  10. Obadiah CHISUM - b. 1747 Amelia County, VA, he married Mary Ann CARDWELL in 1789. He died 18 Jan 1837 Springfield, TN, and is buried at Chisum Cemetery, Franklin County, TN.
  11. Priscilla CHISUM - b. 1750 at Amelia County, VA, she married John H. HILL. She died at Logan County, KY.
  12. Sarah CHISUM - bc 1752 Amelia County, VA, she married William PATTILLO. She died at Logan County, KY.

5. James CHISUM, (c1734 - bef 1786)

James CHISUM was born circa 1734 in St. Margaret's Parish, Caroline County, VA. He married Barbara ESTES, daughter of Thomas ESTES, date unknown. In 1771 James Chisum purchased 100 acres of land in Halifax County, VA, from Joseph Lewis on Grindstone Fork of Terrible Creek. This land became the home plantation, which went into the possession of James's youngest son Edmund.

James CHISUM's estate was probated in Jun 1786 at Halifax County, VA (Inventory and Appraisement: £105/8/3, returned 16 NOV 1786).

James and Barbara CHISUM had seven children:

  1. Adam CHISUM - died after 6 Oct 1817 at Union County, SC.
  2. Sarah CHISSUM - m. James LOYD on 15 Dec 1788 at Halifax County, VA.
  3. Edmund CHISHOLM - m. Polly CHANDLER on 20 Oct 1785 at Halifax County, VA. He died at Overton County, TN.
  4. Margaret CHISUM - m. Robert NEELY on 30 Sep 1790 at Halifax County, VA.
  5. James Thomas CHISM, Jr. - b. 16 Oct 1754 Amelia County, VA, he married Mary HOWARD, daughter of Obadiah HOWARD and Priscilla BREED, in 1780. He married Johanna PHELPS on 7 Jul 1796 at Halifax County, VA. He died on 7 Jul 1819 at Barren County, KY, at age 64. James Chisum Jr., after the Revolutionary War, went to the Carolinas, Georgia, and then with a "traveling church" to southern KY.
  6. John CHISUM - bc 1756 Amelia County, VA, he married Sarah HARRIS in 1774 at Spartanburg, Spartanburg County, SC. During the Revolutionary War he served as a Private, Roebuck's Regiment of South Carolina in 1776. He died on 15 Jun 1829 at Marion, Perry County, AL.

5. Ellender "Ely" Gillington CHISUM, (1773-c1854)

Ellender 'Ely' Gillington CHISSUM was born 1773 Halifax County, VA. She and Lewis FLEMISTER obtained a marriage license on 10 Feb 1790 at Halifax County, VA (Elly Chissum, daughter of Barbary Chissum who consents. Surety: Edmund Chissum).
