FOOKS

"Fooks Family" by Herbert C. Fooks

I am greatly indebted to this book and was thrilled to have found it. In 1953 Herbert Fooks printed this edition of FOOKS family genealogy and states that he was working from work started in 1920 and published in 1928.

My collected information is shown below, and is from this publication unless otherwise noted.

1. James FOWKE, of Staffordshire, England

James FOWKE was born 4 FEB 1597 in Brewood, Staffordshire, England. There seems to be a long stretch of time to the connection to the next James. This should be investigated further to be sure it is accurate.

2. James FOWKES/James FOOKS

The earliest record of this James FOWKES/FOOKS in Accomack County, VA is a court record where a Thomas BUNNY petitioned the court to be removed from the care of Mr. George HACK and to live with Mr. James FOOKES to learn the rule of trade of carpentry. The term was to be 4 years in length, but BUNNY petitioned to be allowed to be able to return to England if his family wanted him back, and the court returned him to HACK's custody. [McKey, "Accomack County, VA Court Abstracts, 1663-1666, Vol. 1"].

3. Thomas FOOKES, b. before 1645 in Virginia

Thomas FOOKES is also sometimes recorded as Thomas FFOWKE/FOWKES and other variants. When the surname is recorded with the 'double f' beginning, it usually is in lower case - ffowkes.

Thomas FOOKES appears in many court records in Accomack County, VA from 1666 until his death around 1722. Is is unclear who Thomas FOOKES married, but he was father to: Elizabeth (m. Thomas CRIPPEN), Daniel, William, James, Benjamin, Naomi (m. Mr. EDMUNDS), Mary (m. Thomas WARRINGTON), Sarah (see next), and Rachel (m. Mr. PRITCHARD).

4. Sarah FOOKS

Sarah FOOKS was born about 1692 and was married to Benjamin AYDELLOT of Somerset County, MD by 25 OCT 1720. Check the AYDELOTT family page for more information on this family.
