I also pull my generator out when I am doing a building project outside. I could run cords from the garage or the house but just for the fun of it I will often start up the generator. Since I use it regularly, it is always ready to go. I want to run at least a tank of gas through my generator every year and this helps. I have converted away from the battery powered tools because the batteries will die in two to four years if you use them or not. Good electric tools, a couple of good extension cords and a generator will be a lot less expensive in the long run.
I usually do not fill my generator with gas. Since I usually only use it for 20 to 30 minutes at a time I only fill the tank half way. I never want to run my generator out of gas but I don't want the gas getting old in my generator either.

The worst thing that you can do to your generator is not use it. Letting it sit under the pile of garden, camping and other stuff in the garage will mean it might not work when you need it the most.
