Generators and Air Conditioners make Hot summer camping a lot more fun. If you have ever tried to sleep in a camper on a 100 degree night with no wind and no air conditioning you will know what I mean. I have tried to sleep next to a camper with a very loud generator and that is no fun either.
If you are sizing your generator to work with an air conditioner in a camper be sure to get the air conditioner first. You want to carefully read the label on the AC to know exactly what the power requirements are. The major problem can be the starting load of the air conditioner. Often this will be 1/2 or 2/3 more than the base load for the AC.
The other problem is if you are planning on using more than just lights while the generator is powering the AC. Starting up your microwave, popcorn popper or other 1500 watt small appliance can easily push your generator to overload.

Ordinarily the smallest generator that will power most RV air conditioners will be a 3000 watt unit. I would look real hard at starting with a 4000 watt genset for your AC unit.
Most of the time it will pay off in gas savings to go with an Inverter Genset for your AC. The reason is most of the time the AC will cycle on and off a lot. When the AC cycles off the inverter generator will save a lot on gas. Often leaving a generator and AC running at night will make you realize you want the quietest generator you can come up with also. Check the Decibel levels on the generator you are thinking about and you will find most Inverter Genys are significantly quieter than conventional generators also.
