If you are wanting a generator to power a computer there are a couple of different options.
Computers can be very sensitive to power issues. I will not run my computer directly from a generator. If I were to use a generator to power my computers I would go with an Inverter Generator.
When I am not hooked onto the grid I only use a battery to power my computer. I use a laptop and run it off it's own battery and recharge the computer from a buffer battery. This eliminates the problems with inconsistent power coming from a generator. In recharging a buffer battery if the generator power is out of cycle that is not a problem.

For my buffer battery I bought a Jumper Box from Costco. This is what people use to jump start their cars when their car battery is dead. I can charge the Jumper Box either from the cigarette lighter plugin of my vehicle, or I can plug it into 120 AC and charge it. I have an inverter that can plug into the auxilary power plug in on the battery to recharge my laptop battery or run a small draw item.
If i had a high quality Inverter generator I would still not use it to charge my laptop. I have charged up my laptop battery three times with my Jumper Box. The Jumper box was only down about 1/2 of a volt. Recharging your laptop from a battery is simple and is great because you will not have issues with voltage surges.
My buffer battery Jump Boxes also have a small low quality air compressor and an LED light built in. I have never tried it but I believe the LED light would stay on for years.
A Buffer battery setup will save you any potential power surges messing up your computer. The best deal I have found on a Buffer Battery/Jump box is from Costco.
