Merit Badges

A Message from The Scoutmaster to Troop 18 Scouts and their Parents:

All scouts are encouraged to work on merit badges at any time during the year. Scouts, regardless of age, are required to secure Scoutmaster approval prior to starting a merit badge. The BSA merit badge application cards have a signature line for the Scoutmaster's approval. Prior to the scoutmaster signing off on starting a merit badge, he will confirm that the scout is making satisfactory progress on rank advancement, and that a qualified merit badge counselor has been identified to work with the scout. The younger scouts and their parents should not get overly concerned with merit badges. This is to make sure the younger scouts are not doing too much too soon. However, we never deny a younger scout the opportunity to start a merit badge if his interest in it is strong.

If you are Troop 18 Scout and you wish to work on a Merit Badge, do the following:

1. Identify a Merit Badge to work on. For a list of Merit Badges and Worksheet, click here
2. Secure approval to work on the Merit Badge from the SCOUTMASTER. Upon approval, the SCOUTMASTER will
   • arrange for you to get the Application for Merit Badge (blue) form, and
   • identify a qualified merit badge counselor for you to work with
3. Arrange to meet with your merit badge counselor to discuss the merit badge
   • do not begin working on requirements that require a counselor's pre-approval before meeting with him/her
4. Work on your merit badge requirements
5. When ready, make an appointment with your merit badge counselor to demonstrate you have met the requirements
6. When the counselor is satisfied that you have met all the requirements, he or she will sign your blue form
7. Take the blue form to Mr Billings for his signature
8. Take the blue form to Mr Colbert for processing
