1.10 Magazine cover

Congratulations! You have just been recognized as an outstanding student, sports person, scientist, wake boarder, Chess champion or ? This recognition is school appropriate and very honorable. To your surprise and very unusual to the industry, you've been asked to design your own magazine cover. Assist the magazine's editor by submitting a cover you will be proud of for years to come.

Check out Mr. C's cover! He used to be a bounty hunter, like "Dog" on TV - only his nick name was "Wolf." Well, those days are behind him and he has the wrinkles to prove it. Mr. C. has long since retired from bounty hunting. Today, you can find him taking pictures, riding two-wheelers and teaching in Fort Lauderdale, FL. One thing is for sure, only the bad guys are happy “Wolf” is off the streets!

Objective:

Create a professional looking magazine cover using the techniques we have learned using Photoshop. You may use high quality/resolution images for the background of the magazine from Google or other free sites.

Directions:

● Open Ps and create a new document that is 8.5" wide x 11' tall, 300 dpi and CMYK. Be sure to title your new document. MagCoverLastNamePer# Example: MagCover_Carlton3

● Open Camera app software or an image from your phone to capture your image which is suitable for a magazine cover. Your image will be a "shoulder shot" similar to a school picture. Other high resolution photos, that are school appropriate, can be used.

● Drag the photo to the desktop, rename it and open the photo in Photoshop.

● Follow the oral instructions and directions given by Mr. C. to adjust your photo to make it ready for a magazine cover.

● Using your Camera image, create a magazine cover with image of you, on the front cover of the magazine.

● Include text, stating the awesome reason you are on the cover along with other interesting articles in the magazine.

● Make the cover look as professional and accurate as possible. Is the name of your magazine attractive? Does it attract your attention?

● View magazine covers at home, library or the store to get an idea of all the components of a current magazine cover.

● Choose the a magazine you want to be featured on for the March 2021 edition or a month/year in the future.

● Either copy the magazine title from the internet or reproduce the magazine title using the “text” tool

● Include date, special news, updates, awards, “in this issue” section on the cover

● Copy and paste a bar code and place on one of the cover's lower corner

● The magazine cover must look authentic and professional. Search the internet for examples of magazine covers for inspiration.

● Until the cover is ready for submission, save as a .psd file each day, save it in your Google Drive.

● Apply an unsharp mask the image after the magazine cover is complete by clicking on the Filters menu, select "Sharpen" hold then select "Unsharp" from the pop up menu.

● Add this project as a JPEG file to your Google Slides.

To submit for grading by attaching the .png or .jpg file of your magazine cover in Canvas by February 19, 2021.

Guidelines:

● Use layers of text, images and photographs

● If the colors and brightness of your animals don’t match, use curves, levels, or Hue/Saturation to get the images closer.

● Use the color blending mode on your color layers most of the time. If a color doesn’t look right even after hue and saturation adjustments, try some of the other modes.

Evaluation: 100 Pts.

Does the image look like it was never retouched? Is the composite animal natural looking? Is the brightness and coloring natural?

Print the final Magazine Cover project and turn in to instructor by Friday, February 19, 2021.

Enrichment:

● Create another cover using the same techniques using a family or friends image.

● Change the setting of the image by inserting a background using the same techniques
