I've been thinking about what you said in regards to who/what Zoticus is and why he can do what he does, but more importantly, Where did he come from? You had said that maybe he is something left over from the previous cycle (which gave me some great ideas about other stuff) so I started brainstorming. here is a list of all of the things I have so far.
First, Leftover from a previous cycle. This one was your idea, and we could definitely make it work. His "DNA" could have been saved in the energy just as the memories of Life were. as seen from the wrong person getting those memories, there are clearly some problems with the system which could explain why he doesn't have any memories. The only problem I see is that we would have to find a reason why Life would think that the memories were not enough and he needed to send a person through, and why he couldn't just send himself.
Numero Dos: He is leftover from Life's "first" world. He somehow escaped Void and flew through the void until he found the current real and landed there. No real problems here, he just wouldn't have any higher purpose. Which lead to...
Trees. He is the general or a soldier from the "first" world and was tasked by Life to leave once the world is destroyed so that he can warn that Void is getting close. This is my favorite as it elevates Zoticus to really high importantness and it makes the most sense. The reason he is seeking purpose is because he forgot his on the flight here. After the First War of the Realms, Life's plans were destroyed and he was almost killed and Tempest no longer had any guidance. So it would have taken a long time for Zoticus to land and it would have been hard for him to enter.
Number four is basically the same as three. Sometimes, people don't like it when characters end up being gods bound in human form, so I thought if we want him to just be a lesser footsoldier of the past worlds, he could be from the last world that Life made on his trip. Once that world was attacked, Zoticus would leave and try to warn Life that Void was on the last wall.
5 of 6 of 8: Take any of the first four, and turn them into a woman. Then have that woman crash on Aboden and be confused about how the plan is all messed up or maybe she forgot too. skip some stuff and then she's madly in love with Him. And they have a kid and name him Zoticus.
the last one* He's from the future and got sent back to do something. Same general idea as number 3.
Why did I separate these? Well, all of the above have some grand scale stuff with intra-realm travel and such. These last two are not quite so grand (well one of them is) and they are also not based on the "from a previous cycle " premise.
He is a reincarnation of one of the original Elves. Specifically the Elf of the Aether for two reasons. #1 all of the others are either REALLY dead or reincarnated in another place. It also explains why he travels so much in between realms. He was also given a secret purpose by Life at the beginning, so there is a purpose.
#8 He is just special. It happens all of the time. People's emotions mix with the chaotic winds of the world and make strange things happen. Just look at Klad, he turned into the hulk and created a flaming ax all because he was depressed.
That's all I have now. If I think of any others before we make an official decision, I will post them here. Don't let your first impulse win, think all of them over and we will also discuss it. I think with any of these, though, Zoticus will definitely be a memorable character.
