Where Did the Devil Take Jesus?

Matthew 4:5-8: Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: ’He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone." Jesus answered him, "It is also written: ’Do not put the Lord your God to the test." Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ’Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’

Satan took Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple, then to the mountain top.

VS

Luke 4:5-9: The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendor, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours." Jesus answered, "It is written: ’Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’ The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down from here.

Satan took Jesus to the mountain first, then the temple.

1KI 16:6-8 Baasha died in the 26th year of King Asa’s reign.

vs

2CH 16:1 Baasha built a city in the 36th year of King Asa’s reign.

Typical Christian response:

In Jewish tradition there was no provision for a queen. Here, the queen-mother, Maachah, takes on an important role when her son Abijam dies after reigning only 3 years. She adopts one of his sons Asa (I Kings 15:10) apparently as a figure-head and actually reigns herself for the first 10 years (see II Chronicles 14:2). After this period, Asa wins a great battle, is encouraged by the prophet in chapter 15, and takes over. He cleans the idols out of Judah AND Benjamin (as noted above) and removes the idolatrous Maachah as queen (I Kings 15:13 and II Chronicles 15:16). Likely this ten-year reign of the Queen mother alongside Asa is the reason for the ten-year discrepancy in dating the Baasha event by how long Asa had ruled.

Note:

The Bible said Asa became king immediately after the death of his father , not afterdeposing his grandmother from her position as queen-mother.

And Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. And Asa his son succeeded him as king. 9In the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel, Asa became king of Judah, 10and he reigned in Jerusalem forty-one years. His grandmother’s name was Maakah daughter of Abishalom. 1 Kings 15:9-10.

1And Abijah rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David. Asa his son succeeded him as king, and in his days the country was at peace for ten years. 2 Chronicles 14:1.

Nowhere the Bible said his grandmother was the queen, and he was just co-ruling with her. Please note the words "in his days", not "in her days".

Philistines killed King Saul

12And David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of Jonathan his son from the men of Jabeshgilead, which had stolen them from the street of Bethshan, where the Philistines had hanged them, when the Philistines had slain Saul in Gilboa. 2 Samuel 21:12

vs

Saul killed himself. Philistines only wounded him.

3And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was sore wounded of the archers. 4Then said Saul unto his armourbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armourbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.5And when his armourbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him. 1 Samuel 31:3-5.

What is the earth set upon?

Nothing

He stretches out the north over empty space

And hangs the earth on nothing.

Job 26:7 NASB

Pillars

For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,

And He set the world on them.

1 Samuel 2:8 NASB

Who shakes the earth out of its place,

And its pillars tremble;

Job 9:6 NASB

Typical Christian responses

1. The pillars of the earth are not columns under a flat earth (as the critic implies), but they are foundations of the surface of the earth deep inside the earth crust. Planet earth is not set on pillars at all. (How can this be proved from the Bible?)

2. The earth is not hung on pillars. When the Bible mentions pillars it is not saying that the earth is hung up by pillars, but "pillars" is talking about the church of God (1 timothy 3:15, Genesis 20:28). Thus when it says the pillars tremble, or the pillars are the lords, its talking about the Church of God, which is the pillar. No Contradiction.

Note: Pillars of truth is not the same as pillars of earth.

Did everyone (except Noah and his family) die in the flood?

Yes, everything died except for those on the ark. (Genesis 7:21-23)

vs

No, some survived. (Genesis 6:4, Numbers 13:33)

Typical Christian response:

The critic suggests that the giants of which is spoken in Numbers 13:33 belong to the same family of the giants of Genesis 6:4. There is no evidence in the entire Bible for this assumption. So the contradiction is based on an assumption of the critic, nothing more. Certainly we have to do with a variation of extremely great people, that could develop under circumstances before and after the flood but which do not extend anymore.

My Response

For the same reason, there is no evidence to assume that the Nephilim in Numbers are not descendants of those in Genesis. In fact, the text of Numbers said they really are (.. the descendants of Anak come from the Nephilim - Numbers 13:33.)

Was Mahli the son of Levi?

Yes, Mahli was Levi's son.

... of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel.... Ezra 8:18

No.

Mahli was not the son of Levi.

And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. Genesis 46:11, 1 Chronicles 6:1, 16

The sons of Levi, namely, Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 1 Chronicles 23:6

The sons of Merari; Mahli ... 1 Chronicles 6:19, 23:21

The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. 1 Chronicles 24:26

Typical Christian response:

"Was Mahli the son of Levi?" (Alleged Contradiction #E3493)

Ezra 8:18

Genesis 46:11

See also: I Chronicles 6:6, 16; 23:6

Response

Yes, Mahli was the son of Levi, though not theimmediate son—he was a descendant of Levi.

The same verse (Ezra 8:18) says Levi was the son of Israel; and while this is true, we know that Levi was not the immediate son of Israel, he was a descendant. This type of wording is common in the Bible: referring to ancestors/descendants as fathers/sons.

My Response

Levi is a direct descendant of Israel (i.e. Jacob) according to the Bible.

And by the good hand of our God upon us they brought us a man of understanding, of the sons of Mahli, the son of Levi, the son of Israel; and Sherebiah, with his sons and his brethren, eighteen …

And the sons of Levi; Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.
