The 640 acre Slick Rock Creek parcel in the Steve's Fork Creek drainage is 12 miles south of the town of Williams, OR. If sold to timber industry interests it will likely be clear-cut and sprayed with herbicides. You'll notice that there is old growth trees in the parcel. Please contact Governor Kitzhaber today to stop this from happening.
The proposed privatization of this 640 acres of state managed publicly owned land by the Department of State Lands threatens a road-less area adjoining the Red Buttes Wilderness. This is part of a larger Oregon proposal to privatize a total of 4,920 acres of Oregon Common School Fund lands in Josephine and Jackson County that was started in 2010.
Governor Kitzhaber, Secretary of State Kate Brown, and State Treasurer Ted Wheeler decided early in 2012 to withdraw the auction of parcels along the Wild and Scenic Rogue River and the South Kalmiopsis Road-less area. The State Land Board will decide the fate of remaining 3000+ acres in the near future.
Please contact Governor Kitzhaber, Secretary of State Kate Brown, State Treasurer Ted Wheeler and send copies to the Director of the Department of State Lands and urge them to cancel the proposed sale of the remaining Slick Rock Creek, the Onion Mountain, and Althouse Creek parcels along with all other Common School Fund land parcels in Josephine and Jackson County or transfer all the land back to Federal ownership.
Other Ways to Help: Write a letter to the editor or find lands near you that are threatened and advocate for their protection.
