In April 2023, I was awarded a State Council on The Arts 2023 Regrant from the Arts Center of the Capital Region. In partnership with the Town of East Greenbush and the Community and Recreation Department, throughout the summer and fall of 2023, I will be working with other artists and offering a series of free community arts classes to be held in Hampton Manor Park; coordinating a Fall Arts Show to be held in conjunction with the Community Day event at the East Greenbush Town Park in September; and working closely with Columbia High School and Red Mill Elementary School faculty and students to create a second community mural to be painted on the road side of the Hampton Manor Beach House.
This project is made possible with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by The Arts Center of the Capital Region.

Mural Project Complete
The community murals serve as a testament to the transformative power of art and community collaboration, providing a lasting legacy for East Greenbush residents to enjoy. The mural website offers additional details on the journey, including insights into the artistic process and the impactful partnerships that made it all possible.

Community engagement and submissions for this first annual Community Art Show were robust and highlighted the amazing artistic talents of our community. Artists ranging from age 10 to over 70 submitted art in two categories (Painting/Drawing and Photography/Digital Art) for consideration in this show. We had a panel of four jurors who had the daunting task of choosing only 25 images out of the 109 submitted. We were all very impressed by the quality and variety of the entries and had an extremely difficult time narrowing down the choices to fit the available space for the exhibit.
As part of the evaluation of the submissions, we worked diligently to make sure that we included a variety of artists and their work. We collectively considered a unifying approach to the art in the show, limiting one piece per artist in the first through third designations in each category and age group, and we included a few honorable mentions.
I thank all of the artists who entered their work, and I thank our judges: East Greenbush Community and Recreation representative Donna Millet, art teacher Ryan Gottcent, and professional artist Tony D’Adamo for their hard work in evaluating the submissions and assisting me with the curation of the art and artists in this show. I welcome you all to the show and to celebrate the talents of our friends, family, and neighbors.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Grant Overview
Arts in the Parks: An East Greenbush Community Arts Experience
East Greenbush is a suburb of Albany in Rensselaer County with a population over 16,000. Through concerted efforts by the town, the focus on improving the parks and recreation offerings has resulted in vastly improved facilities as well as expanded arts and wellness events in our community parks. Most notable are the long running Music in the Parks series offered each August; the Columbia High School Arts Club mural in the Hampton Manor Park; and a community event where we came together (in the days after George Floyd was murdered) creating chalk drawings and leaving positive sayings in the Hampton Manor Park.
The purpose of this project is to build upon these efforts through a series of community arts and education events to be held the summer and fall in several of the town’s parks. The series will include free arts classes; the creation of a community mural; and hosting a communitywide art show.
All members and age groups of East Greenbush and surrounding communities will be able to join in creativity, learning, and artistic appreciation. Free classes in nature photography, plein air painting, collage/vision-board making, and children’s arts and crafts will be offered in July and August at two parks inside of Hampton Manor, which has over 1,000 households within walking distance. A community mural will be planned and painted to complement the existing mural in Hampton Manor Park. In conjunction with the Fall Festival, we will host a community arts show celebrating the artistic talents of our community at the Town Park.
Through learning about the arts, fostering artistic collaborations, showcasing artistic talents, and building community, this project will provide what the Town Supervisor noted in his letter of support for this project, “an opportunity for people to work together and build relationships that foster pride and understanding.”
