Education and Learning on Film

Course Description 

FILM 3998: Special Topics - Education and Learning on Film addresses theories of analysis and critique movies that focus on educators and learners in private and public K-12 schools and university settings. Students will explore issues of socioeconomics of learners as portrayed in film, educational approaches depicted by actors, as well as dramatic and comedic techniques used to depict educational situations and tell the story of teachers and students in the movies we will watch. Students will be exposed to the power of persuasion, humor, message, and the desire to communicate. Students will write brief reflection papers and complete a final film analysis project. Prerequisites: Students should have basic computer and college level writing skills.

This course is divided into several learning modules with Open Educational Resources (OERS) of freely accessible readings and/or video viewings. Students will engage with the instructor in three individual appointments, write three module response papers, and complete a final case study project. All written work will be emailed directly to the faculty member. Due dates and calendar will be determined in the initial appointment meeting. 

A choice of films accessible via Netflix or other streaming services or DVD will be available in each module along with resources specific to the module response focus of the individual module.  The final case study project will be determined during the 2nd and 3rd appointments in collaboration with the instructor.

Module 2: Films from 1960s - 1980s


Module 3: Films from the 1990s to present


Module 4: Case Study Project


Assignments and Grading

Individual Appointments - 10% of final grade

Module Response Papers -  60% of final grade 

Final Project -  30% of final grade

Module Response Papers

For Modules 1, 2, & 3 - you will write a module response paper using the module materials, you will be asked to write a 2-3 page reflection on the materials addressing the specific questions in each module. These papers should focus on depth of analysis rather than a summary of the course materials. You should use MLA style for citations.

Final Case Study Project:

Your final project should build upon your learning in the course and capture the spirit and essence of the course as a whole. You are encouraged to design a project that is meaningful to you both personally and professionally.  We will make a final determination in our individudal appointments and through a brief 1-2 page project proposal.

You have several options to consider:

The project parameters are limited only by your imagination. 

Length: Contingent upon project form, but roughly equivalent to an 8-10-page scholarly essay (2000-2500 words, not including works cited/references).
