Paul's Online Math Notes - Calculus I
Announcements (Updated 1/10)
The Final Exam is scheduled as follows:
MC3U/1 (normally meets Period 1) Wednesday January 18, 10:50 AM - 12:35 PM (Periods 3 & 4), Room 630
MC3U/2 (normally meets Period 4) Wednesday January 18, 1:35 PM - 3:20 PM (Periods 6 & 7), Room 630
Test 5 will cover textbook sections 4.2, 4.3, 4.5, 4.6, & 4.9, and will consist of twenty 5-point multiple-choice questions.
Period 1 Test Date Fri 1/13
Period 4 Test Date Fri 1/13
Suggestion: Do Spring 2011 Test 5 as a practice test. Here is a blank copy.
Test 4 will cover textbook sections 3.5, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, & 4.1. You are not responsible for material which we did not cover in class such as "Tangents to Parametric Curves" (in Section 3.5), "Orthogonal Trajectories" (in Section 3.6), and "Differentials" (in Section 3.8). However, you will be expected to be proficient with the prerequisite material in Sections 3.1-3.4, as well as the basic properties of trigonometric and exponential functions, and their inverses.
Period 1 Test Date Tue 12/20
Period 4 Test Date Tue 12/20
Suggestion: Do Spring 2011 Test 4 as a practice test. Here is a blank copy.
There will be a Make-Up Point Quiz sometime before the Christmas break. The exact date will not be announced in advance. The quiz will be given during the first 10 minutes of class. Late arrivals will not be given extra time, and no make-up quizzes will be given without a doctor's note or equivalent documentation of justified absence. The Quiz will consist of two problems which I select (verbatim) from Tests 1, 2, and 3. There will be no partial credit - each problem will be awarded either 0 or 10 points, so the only possible scores on the quiz are 0, 10 or 20. In order to receive 10 points on a problem, you will need to use proper mathematical notation, show appropriate and sufficient algebraic work, and get the correct answer. These points will be added directly to the sum of your Test scores after dropping your lowest Test, so if you receive 20 points on the Quiz and we have 5 Tests total, your Test average would be raised 5 points.
Test 3 Solutions and Statistics are posted.
Test 2 Statistics are posted. You may pick up your Test 2 in Room 719D Monday 11/21 either 5th Period or immediately after school.
BREAKING NEWS: Test 3 next Tue 11/22 (not 11/29 as originally scheduled).
Test 3 will cover textbook sections 3.1, 3.2, & 3.4 (we are skipping section 3.3). In addtion, you will be expected to be proficient with the techniques of algebra and pre-calculus, including the basic properties of trigonometric and exponential functions, and their inverses.
Period 1 Test Date Tue 11/22
Period 4 Test Date Tue 11/22
The problem session scheduled for after school on Wednesday 11/2 has been cancelled. Instead, we will hold an in-class review on Thursday 11/3. Please bring HW problems and/or problems from old tests that you would like to discuss, or topics you would like to review.
If you received a score below 60 on Test 1, you are required to make an appointment with the instructor prior to Test 2. Please sign up for appointments on the sign-up sheet posted outside of Room 719D.
Test 2 will cover textbook sections 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, & 2.9. However, you will also need to be proficient in the theory and techniques of sections 2.2, 2.3, & 2.4. Finally, you will be expected to be proficient with the techniques of algebra and pre-calculus, including the basic properties of trigonometric and exponential functions, and their inverses.

There will be an optional problem session to prepare for Test 1 on Thursday 10/6 from 3:30PM to 4:30PM in Room 632 (next door to our usual room). Please bring HW problems and/or problems from Spring 2011 Test 1 that you would like to discuss, or topics you would like to review. HW 2.4 due date has been changed to Friday and will be discussed that day in class.
Test 1 will cover textbook sections 2.2, 2.3, & 2.4. In addition, you will be expected to be proficient with the techniques of algebra and pre-calculus, including the basic properties of trigonometric and exponential functions, and their inverses.

Welcome to Calculus I.
Homework (Updated 1/5)
Some assigned problems have a "calculator graphing" component. That part of the problem (only) is optional; the rest of the problem is required.
Please be prepared to present (on board) and/or hand in HW 4.5, HW 4.6, & HW 4.9 on Tue 1/10.
