John was the third son born to his parents David and Margaretha (Barringer) Bame (older Behm). He spent his childhood in Rensselaer County, but when he was teenager his family moved to Vischer Ferry, Saratoga, New York, USA. His mother died there in the spring of 1841, when John was sixteen years old. When a young man, John relocated to Schenectady, Schenectady, New York, USA. He initially found work as a carpenter and later came to run his own livery, the O.K. Livery (ad from the local paper run in 1863 to the left). According to John himself, the O.K. stood for “Oll Korrect” a motto he claimed to follow to the letter. The Amsterdam Dispatch considered John’s livery to be “one of the best regulated Liveries in the State” and were “very favorably impressed with the air of neatness which everything wore.” In February of 1865, John and a competitor, Van Vranken, wagered $50 in a horse race. John’s Lady Fisher was to race in a trot on the ice on 22 Feb 1865 against Van Vranken’s black mare. The paper reported that “good sport” was to be anticipated. That April he acquired two new buggies and a double carriage. In Decemeber of the same year, John purchased a hearse, formerly owned by Jacob DeForest, which he rented for funerals at the discounted price of $2.50, though he was known to furnish the hearse carriages for free to those unable to pay. In April of 1867 one of John’s horses traversed the distance between Schenectady and Utica in 11 hours – considered pretty good time for the present road conditions. John’s fine horses and equipment was susceptible to thievery: in 1864, a man calling himself John H. Livingston attempted to steal a horse; in 1864, another horse and carriage was stolen from his stables by James Williams who was tried in 1866; in Aug 1868 a gray horse and carriage were stolen by a man headed to Massachusetts; and in 1869 an afghan and wolf robe was stolen.
His property, located at 114 Center St., was worth $6000 in 1870. Eventually he came to acquire an entire block, known as the Bame block between Center and Liberty Streets. The corner building, a frame construction with a brick front, caught fire at 3 o’clock in the morning on 31 Mar 1890. The building sustained damages costing between $4000-$5000. Luckily, John was insured for $6000. Aside from John’s carriage repository, La Halt & Gabler – a stove and tin store – and J.J. Murphy’s undertaking rooms and a saloon were located there. Three families lived above the businesses, only the wife of the saloon keeper had to be lowered from a window via a bedsheet rope; the rest of the residents were able to escape. Eventually the building was sold and replaced with a New York Central Railroad station.
He and his wife Hester had a total of four children, two of which survived infancy. They raised their two daughters in a brick home at 242 State St. and later at 101 Liberty St. Hester was born and raised on her father’s family homestead in Niskayuna, NY. She received her education in the Lancaster system of schools in Schenectady. According to her obituary, John and Hester married in 1855 – probably a mistake for 1845 as they were already married in the June 1850 US Federal Census.
John died on a Sunday at his home. He left a comfortable fortune for his wife and two married daughters. After John’s death, Hester continued to live at 410 Liberty St. with her daughter Melissa, her grandson John Bame Kosboth and his young family. After her daughter Melissa remarried in 1903, Hester moved into her daughter’s new husband’s house at 513 Liberty St., leaving John B. Kosboth the entirety of the house located at 410. Hester died at the home of her daughter Mrs. John H. (Melissa) White, located at 513 Liberty Street, on Wednesday at 4:15 in the afternoon. Her death was the result of pleuro-pneumonia. She was buried in Vale Cemetery next to her husband in Schenectady, NY.

Melissa was born and raised in Schenectady, NY. She was one of at least four children born to her parents. Melissa married Roselle J. Kosboth in the First Dutch Church in Schenectady on Wednesday, December 12, 1866. The Reverend Dennis Wortman officiated. Roselle had been born in Danube, Herkimer, New York, USA, but he was raised in Schenectady. On 30 Aug 1864 in Halfmoon, Saratoga, New York, USA he enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 16. According to his enlistment record, Roselle was fair skinned with brown eyes and dark hair; he stood 5’6.5” high. Roselle served as a private in Co. K, NY 1st Light Artillery Battery. He mustered out on 20 Jun 1865 in Elmira, Chemung, New York, USA.
The couple and their three young daughters resided in a framed house worth $2500 dollars in 1875. Delilah Young, a sixteen-year-old girl resided with the family, working as their domestic servant. Roselle worked as a stock broker, and the family was living in Brooklyn, NY in 1880. Roselle may have died there in Feb 1882 or in Schenectady, NY. He may be buried in Vale Cemetery. By 1892 the family had returned to Schenectady, NY. Melissa lived with her parents at 410 Liberty St. Her son John Bame Kosboth lived in the other half of the house with his family. Next door to them lived the widower and future mayor, John H. White, and his family.
Melissa married the former democratic Mayor of Schenectady (1900-1901), John H. White. John had been previously married and had two sons, Nicholas and John Ward White, from his former marriage. John and Melissa made their home at 513 Liberty St., her mother resided with them until her death in 1910. John worked as a dry goods merchant. He was retired by 1915. John died on 19 Jan 1924 in Schenectady. His Last Will and Testament went into probate on 05 Feb 1924 in Schenectady. Melissa contested the probate ruling and it was overturned in March 1927. She was awarded the cash value of 1/3rd of her late husband’s personal estate. The language he used in his Will was technically unclear, but the judge overturned the original ruling on the basis of what John intended in his Will for her to have.
Melissa belonged to the First Reformed Church in Schenectady as well as the Daughters of the American Revolution chapter there. After John’s death, Melissa moved in with her daughter Mrs. Ettie Walton at 26 Front Street in Schenectady. She died there after a lingering illness on 22 May 1934. Melissa was buried in Vale Cemetery in Schenectady, Schenectady, New York, USA. She left a $10,000 dollar estate which she divided among her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She left $2000 in a trust for great grandson, William Pierce Landon, controlled by his mother Lesbia. She left her four grandchildren, Alonzo P. Walton Jr., Richard Walton, Marjorie K. (Ryder) Jamieson, and Helen L. Kosboth $500 each. To the DAR Schenectady Chapter she left several historical pictures and a bust of George Washington. The remainder of her estate was split between her three surviving children. In addition, she gave 11 shares in US Steel common to her son, 11 shares to Marguerite, and 11 shares Cities Service common to Ettie as well as three shares of Electric Bond and Share stock.
