Margaret McDonald Ham

Critje "Margaret"3 McDonald (Elias2, Collin1) was born on 03 Feb 1808 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died about Feb 1887 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA. She married Freeman Ham about 1827. He was born in 1805 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 18 Jul 1887 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Freeman Ham, she had the following children:

i. Mary Jane Ham (b. 27 Feb 1828 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ii. Leonard Ham (b. May 1830 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iii. Eli Ham (b. Oct 1832 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iv. Elizabeth A. Ham (b. Dec 1833 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

v. Susannah Ham (b. about 1835 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vi. Jacob Ham (b. Sep 1837 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vii. Peter Ham (b. Feb 1840 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

viii. Marilla Ham (b. 09 Mar 1841 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ix. Martha Emiline Ham (b. about 1847 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

x. Celestia Ham (b. 31 Dec 1852 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

Critje, anglicized to Margaret and thence Peggy, was the fourth child of Elias McDonald and Susannah Esselstein. Critje was baptized on 27 Mar 1808 at the Reformed Church in Claverack, Columbia, New York, USA. Her husband, Freeman Ham was a (farm) laborer and later a farmer. They raised their family in Taghkanic, NY. As a farm laborer, Freeman did not own his own farm. He and Margaret owned their household items, but rented their home and farmland. On May 2, 1845, when Deputy Sheriff Sedgwick and Constable John Traver came to evict the family, they found Freeman was not home. By the time he had returned the weather had turned unfavorable so they offered to allow the family to remain in the house until the following day or the day after if they would pay $15 for lodging. Their offer was refused and the Hams refused to leave. The two men returned the following morning (Friday) along with a Constable from Greenport, NY. While the men were removing the Ham's furniture, a group of men dressed as "Indians" fired several shots at them from the treeline. They grazed the sheriff's leg with a bullet, but otherwise the two men were unharmed. After they left the premises, the two men were shot at again with buck shot, resulting in severe injury to them both, with wounds to the head and upper torso. Men returning from the field saw the officers in distress but refused to aid them, being of the same disposition as the disguised men. The target appeared to have been only Sheriff Sedgwick, as the shooter called out to Travers to move if he did not want to be shot at. Articles appeared in papers in Jamaica, NY, Utica, NY, and Greenfield, MA. The attack was considered to be part of the Anti-Rent Outrage.

This would indicate that the farmhouse (and land) Freeman was renting at the time had belonged to Stephen van Rensselaer III, who had allowed the collection of his rent to lapse and when van Rensselaer's heirs came to collect the back rent, Freeman was unable to produce the total amount he owed. In 1864 Freeman owned one milch cow from which he produced 150lbs of butter and one pig, which he slaughtered in 1864 for 128lbs of pork. Eventually, Freeman came to own his own small farm in April 1870 when he purchased the P. Kilmer lot, bounded to the north by Jeremiah Crook, to the east by Walter Ham, to the south by A. Bush, and to the west by Jacob Carle and Abraham Bush. He purchased the farm at auction, the opening bid was $100, and Freeman paid $350 for it. The lot consisted of 4 acres of improved land, 2 acres of woodland and 2 additional acres of unimproved land. His farm was valued at $300 in 1870 (about $1,700 today). By comparison, the next least valuable farm among his neighbors was worth $1,000; while most were worth between $5,000-$8,000, some being over $20,000. The family had 1 horse, 1 milch cow, 2 oxen, 2 other cattle, 3 pigs and 25 sheep. He grew rye, Indian corn, buckwheat, and oats.

Margaret had a total of 11 children, 10 of whom are known. Margaret's younger daughters Marilla, Martha, and Celestia all died young. Marilla died on 07 Nov 1851 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA. Martha died on 11 Mar 1854 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA. Their burial locations are unknown. Celestia died on 21 Apr 1862 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA at the age of 9y, 3m and 21d. She is buried in West Copake Cemetery in West Copake, Columbia County, New York, USA. Margaret was listed as seriously ill in the January 28, 1887 social column in the Chatham Republican, she was attended by Dr. Shufelt. Margaret and Freeman's burial places are unknown.

Mary Jane4 Ham (Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 27 Feb 1828 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died before May 1888. She married Sylvester Turner, son of John W. Turner and Charity Race, on 01 Oct 1850 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. He was born on 15 Jul 1825 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. He died on 07 Jun 1888 in Hudson, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Sylvester Turner, she had the following children:

i. Ward W. Turner (b. Jan 1851 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

ii. Augusta E. Turner (b. Oct 1853 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

iii. Adelbert A. Turner (b. May 1855 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

iv. Charity Turner (b. 03 Sep 1857 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

v. Frank Turner (b. about 1860 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

vi. Margaretta Turner (b. 20 Dec 1862 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

vii. Minnie Turner (b. Apr 1865 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

Baptized as Maria Jane on 10 Aug 1828 in Churchtown, NY the same day as her maternal cousin, Eliza Rockefeller. Mary Jane grew up in Taghkanic, NY and moved to Copake, NY around 1847, as indicated by the 1855 NY State Census (she reports she'd been living in Copake for only 8 years, while her husband Sylvester had been there 28 years). In old genealogical publications concerning the Race Family, her surname is sometimes given as Horn, as a result of the transcriptionist's misreading Ham (think loopy stretched out letters in cursive). Sylvester was a farm laborer by trade, serving as Collector for the Town of Copake in 1862 and again in 1878. Sylvester registered for the Civil War draft in June 1863. He enlisted on 15 Sep 1864 in the New York 91st Infantry, Co. H. He was a private who had enlisted for the term of one year. He was discharged with his detachment on 10 Jun 1865 outside Frederick, Frederick, Maryland, USA at Monocacy Junction. He had a balance of three months to serve, but was never recalled to service. According to the records, Sylvester stood at 5'9" and had blue eyes and brown hair. The 1865 Y State Census was also taken on 10 Jun 1865, according to the records, Sylvester (located on page 9 of the Copake records, line 28) was still in active service. The record is very washed out, so it is not possible to read how many children Mary Jane had, possibly a "6" written there, even though she had had seven. Their son Frank was listed as one month old on 29 Jun 1860, possibly he was born in May, but more likely early in June. He died before 1864, and his burial location is unknown. Mary Jane predeceased her husband, but was still alive on June 1, 1880 when the Federal Census was taken. Sylvester did not provide for a widow in his 03 May 1888 Last Will & Testament, and when his Will was entered into Probate Court on 31 Jul 1888 in Hudson, NY, Ward reported that his father had left no widow. Sylvester had named his son Ward as his sole executor. He left him $200, while he left Adelbert only $45. All four daughters were named in the Will as well: Augusta Hutchinson, Charity Loom, Margaret Vosburgh, and Minnie Buntz [sic. Bunce]. They split the remainder of their father's estate with their brothers in equal shares. Mary Jane's burial location is unknown. Sylvester was buried in the E&M Church Cemetery in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA.

Ward W.5 Turner (Mary4, Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Jan 1851 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. He died on 22 Mar 1918 in Hudson, Columbia, New York, USA. He married Mary Van Hoesen, daughter of Jacob Van Hoesen and Rebecca Hallenbeck, about 1884. She was born in Jul 1858 in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA. She died after Jan 1920.

Ward was the first grandchild of Freeman and Peggy (McDonald) Ham. He grew up in Copake, NY the oldest of seven. Mary grew up in Catskill, NY. Her parents were both from Columbia County, but Mary was more likely born in Catskill, NY rather than Columbia Co., NY as her parents were already living in Catskill, NY by 1850. As a young man, Ward followed his father's trade of farm laborer. In the mid-1870s, he moved from Copake to Hudson, NY and took a job in a saloon. Ward worked in one of the hotels on Warren St. in Hudson, NY. He also worked as a cigar maker. In March 1883 the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company purchased his place at 283 Warren St. to set up shop in Hudson. Ward purchased his own home at 344 Warren St. where he and Mary lived until his retirement. He and Mary did not have any children. In 1890, he ran a billiards parlor out of his home. In the summer of 1898 Ward and Mary went to Windham, Greene, New York, USA. Ward had been offered to manage the cafe at the Summit Hotel there. Not long after, Ward retired and picked up a job as the caretaker for the Sixth Street School in Hudson, NY. In 1907, Mary was seriously ill with pneumonia, having been bedridden for several weeks from Decemeber 1906 until the end of January 1907 when she was finally able to leave her bed. She was still weak, but did recover late in February 1907. On July 1, 1913 Ward purchased a house and property at 515 Clinton St. in the Fifth Ward of the city from George B. Grossman and his wife. In the spring of 1916, Ward suffered an attack of rheumatism that left him bedridden until he recovered. Ward died at their home, early Friday evening on March 22, 1918 of pneumonia. He'd been ill only a week, but steadily got weaker. His burial location is unknown. Mary sold the house and moved in with her sister-in-law Augusta (Turner) Hutchinsen and her husband Chauncey at 36 Reed St. in Great Barrington, MA. Mary was still alive in January 1920, but she likely died before 1930. Her burial location is unknown.

Augusta E.5 Turner (Mary4, Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Oct 1853 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. She died in 1934 in Great Barrington, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. She married Chauncey B. Hutchinsen, son of Chauncey P. Hutchinsen and Clarissa Bunce, about 1874. He was born in Feb 1851 in Sheffield, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. He died about 1931.

With Chauncey B. Hutchinsen, she had the following children:

i. Minnie B. Hutchinsen (b. 28 Feb 1875 in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, USA)

ii. May Clarissa Hutchinsen (b. 20 Mar 1877 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

iii. Mark E. Hutchinsen (b. 19 Dec 1886 in Egremont, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA)

Augusta was the oldest of the four Turner sisters. She grew up in Copake, NY. As a young woman, she left her parents household to work. She was a domestic servant living in the household of John D. and Nancy Langdon in 1870 in Copake, NY. Around 1874 she married Chauncey, the son of a farmer and horse dealer. Chauncey had lived in Troy, NY before his family settled in Hillsdale, NY. Chauncey and Augusta had three children. They were living in Hillsdale, NY in 1875 near his parents when their oldest daughter was born. Minnie B. died on 10 Jan 1897, about a month and a shy of her twenty-second birthday. She died as a result of heart disease at home in Egremont, MA. Her heart disease was most likely a result of a childhood illness such as Scarlet Fever, but it may have been congenital. In 1877, the Hutchinsens were living in Copake, NY when they had their second child. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Egremont, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA where Chauncey was a farmer. Their third child, Mark E. was born there on 19 Dec 1886. He died three days later as a result of "ination" on 22 Dec 1886 in Egremont, MA. Minnie and Mar's burial locations are unknown.

Chauncey eventually purchased a home at 38 Reed St. where he and Augusta lived until their dying days. After Augusta's brother Ward died in 1918, his widow Mary moved into their household. Later, their daughter May and her husband, and her daughter Evelyn lived with them. Chauncey died about 1931, as his wife is listed as a widow in the 1932 City Directory. Augusta died three years later at the age of 81. Their final resting places are unknown.

Minnie5 Turner (Mary4, Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Apr 1865 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. She died on 13 Dec 1893 in Egremont, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. She married Frank Daniel Bunce, son of Daniel Bunce and Lauretta Stickles, on 30 Jul 1887 in West Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. He was born on 05 Oct 1865 in Egremont, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. He died on 25 Jul 1947 in Great Barrington, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA.

With Frank Daniel Bunce, she had the following children:

i. John D. Bunce (b. Nov 1888 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ii. Sylvester Bunce (b. 22 Mar 1891 in West Egremont, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA)

Minnie was the fourth and youngest daughter of Sylvester and Mary Jane (Ham) Turner. She grew up in Copake, NY. Her father was a farm laborer. Minnie had some schooling which started around age five and ended before she turned fourteen. She likely remained at home with her parents, maybe working as a domestic servant, until her marriage to Frank Bunce on 30 Jul 1887. The ceremony was solemnized by the Rev. J.C. Garretson of West Copake. Minnie's husband Frank had grown up in Egremont, MA. On July 16, 1886, about a year before their marriage, Frank along with his brother Fred, and Fred Funk and Charles Platt, all of Egremont, were arrested that Sunday night. Seymour Winchell had informed the police that the four young men had broken into his home on the "Summit of Echoes" and destroyed some of his furniture. Charles was fined $10, while the other three were fined $5 (about $125 today). After their marriage, Minnie and Frank made their home in Egremont, MA. Frank worked both as a farmer/farm laborer and a stationary engineer. Minnie died there at the age of 28, no cause of death was listed. A few weeks later, Frank's mother Lauretta died as a result of an pneumonia. Minnie was buried in the Bunce family plot in Riverside Cemetery in Egremont, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA. Her name appears on the reverse side of the headstone along with her brother-in-law Fred who died in 1896. On the headstone, Minnie's death year is given as 1894, no doubt purchased sometime later and the information slightly mis-remembered.

On January 24, 1895 Frank and Fred Bunce were both brought up on charges of assault in the first degree. Fred died about a year later in 1896, while Frank continued to serve his sentence in the Massachusetts State Prison, where he was enumerated in 1900. His sons were living with his sister Etta A. (Bunce) Buckbee in Ancram, NY. After Frank was released, his sons returned to his home, now in Alford, MA. He also hired a housekeeper named Alice L. Montague, whom he would later marry on 20 Jan 1914 in Stockbridge, MA. She was the daughter of Harvey Rivel and Jeanette Woodin. She and Frank made their home together until his death in 1947. Frank died at the Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington, MA as a result of chronic lymphatic leukemia coupled with arteriosclerosis. Frank's burial location is unknown.

Leonard4 Ham (Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in May 1830 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died after Jun 1900. He married Eva Lorinda Rockefeller, daughter of Simeon Rockefeller and Margaret Melius, about 1854. She was born on 03 Oct 1831 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 20 Nov 1889 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Eva Lorinda Rockefeller, he had the following children:

i. Harriet E. Ham (b. 1855 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ii. Orelia Lorinda Ham (b. May 1857 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

iii. Norman H. Ham (b. 10 Sep 1859 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

iv. Mary A. Ham (b. 11 Jan 1862 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

v. Homer L. Ham (b. Jan 1871 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

Leonard was the eldest son and second child of his parents. He worked as a farmer until the late 1860s when he sold his farm and took a job in a local paper mill along with his brother Peter. In 1855, he and his growing family shared their house with Edward Leach and his growing family. Leonard and Lorinda had at least five children. Their eldest daughter Harriet was born in early 1855, being four months old in July 1855. She died before 1860. Her burial location is unknown. Lorinda's mother Margaret lived with the family for many years until her death in the 1880s. In 1875, the Ham family shared their house with John H. Boice and his family (not to be confused with the John H. Boice that Orelia married). Leonard's daughter Mary would go on to marry John's son Asa in 1880. On 20 Nov 1889 in Ancram, NY the wife of Leonard Ham died. Her first name was not given, nor her age. Although there was another Leonard Ham within a year or two of our Leonard's age, he lived in Livingston, NY and was married to Cordelia Proper. That Leonard died before 1865 as Cordelia was listed as a widow in the 1865 NY Census. Cordelia remarried, so assigning the unnamed Mrs. Leonard Ham of 1889 to Lorinda is the most probable solution. After Lorinda's death in 1889, Leonard moved into his daughter Mary's house. He resided with them until his death in 1902 at the age of 71, approximately two months shy of 72. Leonard and Lorinda's burial locations are unknown.

v. Maryette Ham (b. Jun 1872 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vi. John Edward Ham (b. Apr 1875 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

The third child of Freeman and Peggy Ham, Eli grew up in Taghkanic, NY. He was about 12 years old when his family was evicted from their home in May 1845 because Freeman could not pay his back rent. In 1855, Eli was no longer living at home. In 1860, he was a farm laborer working for and living in the household of George Kisselbrack. Later that year, Eli married Catharine. They had a total of eight children, six of whom are known. Their daughter Cora died on 19 Jul 1877 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA. Her burial location is unknown. The two unknown children were born after June 1865, as Catharine reported she'd had three children with those three all living. One child was probably born about 1867 and the other in the late 1870s. In the summer of 1863, Eli registered for the draft during the Civil War. Although he registered, he never served. His younger brother Peter also registered for the draft.

In 1880, Eli and his older sons found themselves out of work for four months in the past twelve. By the 1890s, Eli had secured his own farm located in Taghkanic, NY just west of the John C. Smith farm along the road from Craryville to East Taghkanic. Charles remained at home with them until his death in 1906. Their youngest surviving child, John and his family also lived with Eli and Catharine. After Eli died in 1905 and Charles in 1906, Catharine moved to Copake, NY into her son John's house. Catharine died there at the age of 73. Eli and Catharine were buried in the West Copake Cemetery in Copake, NY.

Maryette grew up in Taghkanic, NY. She was the only surviving daughter of her parents, Eli and Catharine, her sister Cora having died when Maryette was 5 years old. She and Lester married at the parsonage of he Reformed Church. The marriage ceremoney was performed by Rev. P. Furbeck. Lester and Mary had three children, the middle child died on 23 Feb 1896 in Craryville, Columbia, New York, USA as a result of pneumonia. No age, gender, or name was given in the newspaper. Burial location is unknown. Lester was a farmer most of his life, running a dairy, but he also took odd jobs at different times including bartending. Lester and Mary were eventually able to purchase a home on Campbell Hill Rd., but it did not include farmland. Mary died sometime in the 1930s. Lester died at the age of 78 at the Columbia Memorial Hospital after a lengthy illness. He'd retired only a few years earlier. Lester was buried in West Copake Cemetery in Copake, NY; Maryette was probably also buried there.

He and Hattie married at the parsonage of the Reformed Church in West Copake, Rev. P. Furbeck performed the ceremony. After his marriage, John and Hattie made their home on the Ham homestead, inheriting the farm from his father in 1905 when Eli died. John did not appear to be interested in farming, and likely sold the farm after his brother Charles died in 1906. Afterwards, John tried renting rooms from the family home on Craryville Lake Rd. A few years later, John was working as a mill hand for the High Rock Mtg. Co. in Philmont, NY. His family was living at 220 State St. in Philmont, NY at that time. Within two years, John had opened a meat market, but his success was not to be as less than five years later John had closed the shop and gone on to become a carpenter. In the late 1930s, John once again tried his hand in the grocery business, this time managing a grocery store. In the late 1920s, to help make ends meet, Hattie worked as seamstress first in a cotton mill and later in a dress shop. Their burial locations are unknown.

Elizabeth A. "Betsy"4 Ham (Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Dec 1833 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 13 Mar 1910 in Ghent, Columbia, New York, USA.

Betsy was the second daughter of Freeman and Margaret (McDonald) Ham. She grew up in Taghkanic, NY with her family. She probably left her parents' household around 1845, after her family was evicted from their home, to begin working as a domestic servant in various households. In 1850, she was working in the household of Hannah Hoag in Ancram, NY. Around 1853 she moved to Copake, NY and found employ in the home of Albert S. Miller and family. She probably worked as a housekeeper and helped mind the children. In 1860, Betsy reappears in her parents' home. She was still working as a domestic servant. From the age of 26 until 66 Betsy's life is shadowy. She doesn't appear to have married nor have had children. In 1900, she was living with her brother Peter near Copake Lake, NY. She worked there as the housekeeper. Peter's wife had died in 1892, it's possible Betsy moved into his home shortly before to help care for his dying wife or shortly thereafter to help care for her brother. She continued to live with Peter until his untimely death in April 1906. Afterwards, Betsy appears to have removed to Ghent, NY where she died on March 13th. She was buried in the West Copake Cemetery in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA.

Susannah4 Ham (Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born about 1835 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 13 Feb 1888 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA. She married George Roraback, son of John Roraback and Sally, about 1856. He was born in Aug 1829 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 10 Sep 1908 in Hudson, Columbia, New York, USA.

With George Roraback, she had the following children:

i. John A. Roraback (b. May 1857 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ii. George F. Roraback (b. about 1859 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iii. Willis Roraback (b. Jun 1861 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

Susannah, later Susan, was the third daughter and fifth surviving child of her parents, Freeman and Margaret Ham. She was named for her maternal grandmother. She was born as early as 1835 (her next oldest sibling having been born in Dec 1833) and as late as 1836 (her mother would've been pregnant with Susan's next youngest sibling Jacob around January 1837). Later in life, Susan reported herself to be three years younger than her actual age. In 1855 she was no longer living with her family. Most likely, she was still living in Ancram, NY, but she could've been in Copake, NY where two of her older siblings were living. In 1860, she was listed as a domestic servant, and no doubt in her early teens she began working to help support her family.

She was enumerated twice in the 1860 Federal Census. Once on July 25, 1860 in Ancram, NY with her husband and two young sons. She was counted again on August 9, 1860 in Taghkanic, NY with her parents. Susan probably was not living there, but the reason remains unknown why she was staying there at that time. Not long after, before 1864, her son George F. died, his burial location is unknown. Her husband George was a farmer, acquiring his own farm in the 1860s. He'd sold the farm in his early 50s, and began working as a laborer in a local paper mill. His property was still worth $1100. According to the 1880 Federal Census, George was illiterate. Susan, sometime between 1875 and 1880, suffered an accident and was left maimed or disabled in some fashion, the record had no specifics, only that she fell into that category. She died in mid-Feb 1888. George continued to live in their household and began renting out the extra rooms. In 1900, Dewitt Travers and his family lived with him, and he rented rooms to Emory Tripp beginning around 01 Apr 1903. In Dec 1904, George sold his house to Charles McDonald for $550. He moved into his son, Willis's residence at 63 N. 5th St. in Hudson, NY. Willis and his brother-in-law John M. Shook co-owned the house, his Willis’s mother-in-law also resided with the family. George died there in 1908. Susan and George were buried in the Ancram Union Cemetery in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA.

John A.5 Roraback (Susannah4, Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in May 1857 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died in 1926. He married (1) Cora Palmatier, daughter of John F. Palmatier and Susan M. Hoysradt, on 20 Oct 1886 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA. She was born in May 1862 in Dutchess County, New York, USA. She died on 03 Mar 1906 Collinsville, Hartford, Connecticut, USA. He married (2) Myra Dean Robbins, daughter of Frederick C. Robbins and Eliza Chapman, about 1909. She was born on 24 Nov 1862 in Ludlow, Windsor, Vermont, USA. She died on 24 Aug 1934 in New London, New London, Connecticut, USA.

John grew up on his father's farm in Ancram, NY. In the late 1860s, John's father sold the family farmland and began working in a paper mill. John followed his father's lead and took a job in the paper mill while a young man. At the age of 29, he married his first wife Cora; she'd grown up in Pine Plains, NY. Their wedding ceremony was solemnized by Rev. H. Heroy. In Oct 1896, John and Cora moved to Collinsville, Hartford, Connecticut, USA. John worked as a temperer for the Collins Company (sign pictured to the left). John and Cora did not have any children. In 1900, John's maternal first cousin, Daniel J. Ham (son of Jacob Ham) lived with them. Cora died at the age of 44 at the Sanitarium in Collinsville, CT. About three years later, he married his second wife, Myra. Myra was a member of the D.A.R. via her mother's maternal grandfather and his father, Ezekiel Perham and Ezekiel Perham Jr., both served during the Revolutionary War in Massachusetts. Myra had not been married before John, she was about 47 years old when she and John married. John and Myra lived on Maple Avenue and later Center Street in Collinsville, CT. Myra later moved to New London, CT where she died in the Fairview Hospital. John, Cora, and Myra were all buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA.

Willis5 Roraback (Susannah4, Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Jun 1861 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 12 Sep 1924 in Hudson, Columbia, New York, USA. He married Alice Shook, daughter of Jacob J. Shook and Josephine Lee, about 1887. She was born in Aug 1864 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA. She died on 05 May 1936 in Hudson, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Alice Shook, he had the following children:

i. Crawford Perry Roraback (b. 01 Nov 1902 in Hudson, Columbia, New York, USA)

Willis grew up in Ancram, NY on his father's farm. He attended school until he was about 18 years old. He continued working as a farm laborer. His wife Alice's father had been a son of one of the pioneers in Ancram. He, himself, had been a prominent farmer and teacher in the area. He died in 1874 when Alice was about 10 years old. Her mother never remarried. In 1895, Willis and his brother-in-law John M. Shook created their own grocery store, called Shook & Roraback, originally located at 702 Park Place in Hudson, NY, it was later occupied by Albert Loomis. After about a decade there, Willis and John moved the store to 709 Warren St on the Public Square. The shop had been previously occupied by Ezra Niver, one of the oldest grocers in the area. In 1916, the store front was moved again to 802 Warren Street, recently vacated by John Mackey. An article (right) which appeared in the Hudson Evening Register on Monday, May 1, 1916 gives a brief synopsis of the history of the Shook & Roraback firm. The building was a store on the ground level, with two apartments above. In the rear was a barn used for storage. In 1921, six hens were stolen from the rear barn. In January 1922, Kalman Breier purchased the buildings from 801-803 Warren St. He allowed the two men to renew their lease for the store for an additional year. On April 28, 1923, Shook & Roraback began selling off property and goods at 10am. It is possible that Breier did not renew the lease for Shook & Roraback and they needed to sell off some of their stock in order to move.

In 1899, Willis and John Shook purchased the lot and house at 63 N. 5th Street in Hudson, NY. The house had been built by Allen T. Hallenbeck in 1865. The home was built in the Italianate style, constructed of wood with a brick and stone foundation. The original home was two-and-a-half stories with a small porch. Willis and John had purchased the lot from Henry S. Rivenburgh, a local bookkeeper, who'd purchased the home from the Hallenbeck family some five years earlier. Willis and his wife Alice, her brother John and her mother Josephine all made their home here. After Susan passed, Willis's father George moved in with the family until his death in 1908. Sometime between 1905 and 1910, the two men renovated the house in the late Queen Anne style. They added the square turret in the southeast corner of the second floor, giving it a fish-scale style shingle roof. They also added a wrap-around porch and altered the roofline. The Rorabacks sold the home in 1936 to Susan Browning, and it has since changed hands several more times. In 2013, the Galvan Initiative Foundation renovated the house, more information on the history of the house can be found here.

Willis and his son Crawford vacationed every summer at Copake Lake, NY. Both had a love of fishing. In the late winter of 1914, Willis suffered from pneumonia, after which he immediately came down with tonsillitis. In 1917, he sprained his knee and was laid up at home for several weeks. Willis died sometime between 1922 and 1924 when his wife Alice is listed as a widow in the Hudson City Directory. Alice probably died in 1935 (she does not appear in the 1936 Hudson City Directory), prompting her son to sell the house as he and his family has moved to Utica, NY in the early 1930s. Willis and Alice's burial locations are unknown.

xi. Mabel J. Ham (b. 07 Jul 1900 in Schodack, Rensselaer, New York, USA)

xii. Edith Ham (b. 08 May 1903 in Schodack, Rensselaer, New York, USA)

Jacob Ham grew up in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA. He received little if any schooling, he never learned to read or write. In his youth, he worked as a farm laborer in Livingston. On August 19, 1862, he enlisted in Company G of the New York 128th Infantry Regiment as a private for a term of three years. That same year he married Melinda Jennings. She'd grown up in the area and likely received no formal education as she could not read nor write. Sometime between the end of 1870 and early 1875 Jacob began practicing the trade of blacksmith. In 1888, Jacob became a widower after Melinda passed on May 17 in Linlithgo, Columbia, New York, USA. She died from unknown causes. Her final resting place is unknown.

Near the end of 1888 or more likely in 1889, Jacob married his eldest son's widow, Eliza (Rogers) Ham and became the step-father of his three grandchildren: Curtis Rogers, William F., and Susie E. Ham. The family moved to Schodack, Renssalaer, New York, USA near the end of June or early July 1890. Jacob and Eliza had three more children, all born in Renssalaer county, New York. In 1903 Jacob and his family moved to Philmont, Columbia, New York, USA. In February 1914 Eliza suffered from appendicitis and was taken to St. Peter's Hospital in Albany, NY to have it removed. She was released from the hospital in April of the same year. In his old age, Jacob took on odd jobs to support his large family, and eventually took a job in a local cotton mill. The family lived near Copake Lake. Eliza died as a result of Bright's disease in 1917. She was interred in the Mellenville Cemetery in Mellenville, Columbia, New York, USA. Jacob remained near Copake Lake for several more years. However, he was rather ill in the winter and spring of 1921 and this necessitated his moving in with his granddaughter, Mrs. Alta G. Treuer, at 55 Union Lane in Mount Vernon, Westchester, New York, USA. He died there on November 7, 1925 after a lingering illness. He was buried in St. Paul's Cemetery in Eastchester, Westchester, New York, USA.

A note of interest, Jacob's brief death notice mentions he is survived only by three sons (Harry, Wesley, and Alva) and four daughters (Kate, Susan, Mae, Gertrude) despite the fact his son and two daughters with Eliza are still living. None of Melinda's children mention their half-siblings (although no obituaries for Wesley, Kate, and Susan have been located). Nor do Eliza's children by her first husband mention their half-siblings. It's hard to say if the younger children of Melinda were close to their half-siblings, but there was no doubt tension amongst the blended family.

Peter4 Ham (Margaret3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Feb 1840 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 13 Apr 1906 in Copake Lake, Columbia, New York, USA. He married Mary L. Hallock about 1864. She was born about 1840 in New York, USA. She died on 11 Aug 1892 in Chatham Center, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Mary L. Hallock, he had the following children:

i. Emma Ham (b. Apr 1865 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

Peter grew up in Taghkanic, NY, the youngest son of Freeman and Margaret Ham. Peter worked as a farm laborer most of his life, taking other day laborer jobs from time to time. In the summer of 1863, Peter registered for the Civil War draft along with his brother Eli. Peter listed himself as unmarried at the time. He and Mary likely married in early 1864 as no record of their marriage was noted for the 1865 NY State Census year. Growing up in a rather poor family, Peter received little to no education and he could not read or write. In the 1870s, Mary suffered from Scrofula (a type of tuberculosis) which rendered her deaf. To learn to live with her new disability, Peter moved the small family to North East, NY. They returned to Mount Riga Station near Ancram, NY within a few years. In Nov 1886 they moved into his parents' household in Taghkanic, NY. His mother Margaret likely died four or five months after and his father died the following July.

After his parents died, Peter moved the family to Chatham Center, NY. In April 1892, Peter and Mary moved onto the Delbert Conklin farm on Copake Lake. Around the time Mary died, Peter's spinster sister Betsy moved into his household and served as his housekeeper. Peter died at his home on Copake Lake suddenly from pneumonia. Peter was buried in West Copake Cemetery in Copake, NY. His wife Mary was buried in Churchtown, NY.

Peter was a very common name in the Ham/m family around this time. There was another Peter Ham living in West Taghkanic, NY concurrently with our Peter Ham. He died in 1900 on his farm at the age of 71 (making him at least a decade too old to be our Peter). Another, younger, Peter Ham lived in Dutchess Co., NY and often appears in the Hudson and Pine Plains papers. As a result, it is very difficult sometimes to tell if the Peter Ham they're referring to in the papers is ours.
