Elizabeth McDonald Loomis

Elizabeth "Betsey"3 McDonald (Elias2, Collin1) was born on 11 Apr 1797 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 12 Oct 1882 in Verona, Oneida, New York, USA. She married John Loomis, son of John Loomis and Sarah Schaeffer, on 13 Nov 1814 in the St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Churchtown, Columbia, New York, USA. He was born on 17 Aug 1789 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 24 Apr 1873 in Verona, Oneida, New York, USA.

With John Loomis, she had the following children:

i. Catherine Loomis (b. 21 Nov 1815 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ii. Eli E. Loomis (b. 01 Aug 1818 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iii. Jon J. Loomis (b. 06 May 1826 in Vernon, Oneida, New York, USA)

Elizabeth or Betsey was the oldest child born to Elias McDonald and Susannah Esselstein. Elizabeth was baptized on 30 Apr 1797 at the Reformed Church in Claverack, Columbia, New York, USA. Her witnesses were William Blass and Elizabeth Miller. Prior to marrying Elizabeth, John had married Catherine Plass in 1812. She died 06 Apr 1814, around 24 years of age. They had 1 son, William Loomis (b. 24 Nov 1813 in Columbia County, New York, USA) who married Charity Eliza McDonald (b. about 1811 in Rensselaer County, New York, USA) with whom he had 8 children. Alternate spellings of John's surname include Lommes, Lommis, and Lummis, and Elizabeth's is sometimes given as McDaniel. John was baptized in Gallatin, Columbia, New York, USA on 27 Sep 1789 at the Reformed Church. Around 1824 the family moved from the Claverack area to Verona, Oneida, New York, USA. John owned land and engaged in farming. They had servants, but no slaves. According to the 1865 New York State Census, Elizabeth had had 4 children (only 3 of whom survived into adulthood).

To the left is a map from 1858 showing the lot (No. 100) that J. Loomis owned near Sconondoa (lower left-hand corner right above where the blue and yellow areas meet). Click the map to view a larger copy (image from St. Mary's Catholic Church). At this time his real estate was worth about $7000. By 1870 his real estate was worth approximately $9000, and his personal estate $3100. For reference, John had a neighbor whose estate was worth $80,000, and others whose estates were only worth a few hundred, so he was right about in the top-middle as far as his wealth is concerned. After the death of her husband, Elizabeth resided with her youngest son, Jon. Betsey may have been able to read, but she could not write (according to the 1870 Federal Census). John and Betsey are both buried in the Oneida Castle Cemetery in Oneida Castle, Oneida, New York, USA.

Catherine4 Loomis (Elizabeth3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 21 Nov 1815 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died in 1879 in Verona, Oneida, New York, USA. She married Martin I. Cooper before 1837. He was born in 1805 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died in 1891 in Verona, Oneida, New York, USA.

With Martin I. Cooper, she had the following children:

i. Elizabeth Ann Cooper (b. Apr 1837 in New York, USA)

ii. Helen Cooper (b. Apr 1842 in Madison County, New York, USA)

iii. Emily "Emma" Cooper (b. 1845 in Madison County, New York, USA)

Catherine was the oldest child of John Loomis and Elizabeth McDonald; her name is alternately spelled Catharine. She was baptized on 09 Jan 1816 in Churchtown, Columbia, New York, USA; Elias and Susannah McDonald were her witnesses. In 1824, she moved with her family from Columbia County to Verona, Oneida, New York USA. Martin moved to Verona around 1832, presumably from Columbia County. He worked both as a farmer and as a carpenter. Catherine had had 4 children, 3 of whom lived into adulthood. Martin and Catherine's daughter Elizabeth and granddaughter Henrietta Robbins moved in with them after Elizabeth was widowed in 1867. In the 1870s Martin and Catherine's real estate was worth $800, compared to their neighbors' wealth, they were right in the middle. After Catherine died, Martin lived with his youngest daughter Emily/Emma. Martin and Catherine are buried in the Oneida Castle Cemetery in Oneida Castle, Oneida, New York, USA.

Elizabeth Ann5 Cooper (Catherine4, Elizabeth3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Apr 1837 in New York, USA. She died in Mar 1915 in Verona, Oneida, New York, USA. She married (1) Lewis Everett Robbins, son of Elijah Robbins and Rebecca, between 1855 and 1857. He was born 03 Mar 1834 in Springfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA. He died 15 Jan 1867 in Lenox, Madison, New York, USA. She married (2) Charles Yates. He died before Aug 1891.

With Lewis Everett Robbins, she had the following children:

i. Henrietta "Etta" Robbins (b. 08 Oct 1857 in Durhamville, Oneida, New York, USA)

Elizabeth may have been born in either Columbia, Oneida, or Madison County, New York, USA. Her husband Lewis was a farmer who owned a small amount of land. In 1860 their real estate was worth approximately $1000, which was on the lower end of property values among their neighbors. After her husband died in 1867, Elizabeth became a seamstress and moved into her parents' house in Verona, New York. She had at least 1 child, though the 1910 Federal Census indicates she had given birth twice, with only 1 child living. This stands in contrast to both the 1865 New York State Census and the 1900 Federal Census, where she reports she had only had 1 child. In 1900 she was living with her daughter's family on Murphy Rd. She married her second husband after 1870. Charles had a daughter, Jessie Elizabeth Yates, with his first wife, Elizabeth Miller, daughter of John G. Miller and Cordelia Fuller of Rome, NY. In the newspapers, Jessie is often referred to as the daughter of Elizabeth, though it seems unlikely Jessie was Elizabeth’s biological daughter. Elizabeth is buried in Oneida Castle Cemetery in Oneida Castle, Oneida, New York, USA. The final resting places of both her husbands are unknown.

Another son, Frederick, was born to the couple in 1879, but he too died in infancy in 1880. Although not a nurse by trade, Etta is reported to have been skilled at healing, and was often sought out by her neighbors when a family member fell ill. She also taught vocal classes for a number of years, and sang soprano in her church choir. Her husband Rufus was a prominent farmer. They did not own any land, but rented, making their homes on Murphy Rd., and later Thorp Rd. and Cemetery Rd. After Etta died in 1912, he remarried on 15 Jun 1921 to Charlotte M. Emma Jane6 Joslin (Emily5, Catherine4, Elizabeth3, Elias2, Collin1) was born 10 Jul 1873 in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA. She died 26 Feb 1933 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA. She married William Allen. He died after Jun 1910.

Nothing can be said of Emma's husband William other than they married while living in New York. They do not appear to have had any children. Emma was the first woman barber in Syracuse, NY. Although many women publicly criticized her, Emma must have done well. In March of 1909 her husband, drunk, came down to her barber shop one morning in an attempt to rob it. Emma was forced to call the police and have him arrested. Her drive to succeed and earn a living was in part driven by the fact she cared for her invalid mother. As early was 1908 she had a desire to move to Chicago to practice her trade, no doubt due in part to the fact it was more acceptable in the big city for a woman to practice barbery. Around 1917 Emma was able to move to Chicago! In 1920, she was living at 744 Oakwood Blvd. Mrs. Grace Earl, Emma's housekeeper, and her daughter Gladys Earl resided with her. In the 1920s, Emma got involved with the Board of Education and worked as a truant officer. She died at her home there as a result of a heart attack. Emma is buried in the Onondaga Valley Cemetery in Syracuse, Onondaga, New York, USA. Her husband, William's burial place is unknown.
