Charity McDonald Rockefeller

Gertje "Charity"3 McDonald (Elias2, Collin1) was born on 08 Jul 1800 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died in Mar 1880 in Cayuga County, New York, USA. She married William Rockefeller, son of Diel Rockefeller and Helena "Lena" Wheeler, about 1819. He was born on 28 Jan 1801 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. He died on 02 Apr 1863 in Cayuga, Cayuga, New York, USA.

With William Rockefeller, she had the following children:

i. John Rockefeller (b. 19 Nov 1820 in Churchtown, Columbia, New York, USA)

ii. Elisabeth Ann Rockefeller (b. 14 Mar 1822 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iii. Margareth Rockefeller (b. 04 Mar 1824 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iv. Jacob Rockefeller (b. 20 May 1825 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

v. Eliza Rockefeller (b. 24 Oct 1827 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vi. Maria Rockefeller (b. 10 Sep 1829 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vii. Susanna Rockefeller (b. 14 Jun 1831 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

viii. Hannah Christina Rockefeller (b. 27 Aug 1833 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ix. Henry Rockefeller (b. 28 Jan 1835 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

x. Peter Rockefeller (b. 10 Nov 1837 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

xi. Julia Rockefeller (b. 21 Sep 1839 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

xii. Philip D. Rockefeller (b. 10 Mar 1841 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA)

xiii. Charles Mortimer Rockefeller (b. 10 Mar 1845 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA)

xiv. Ebenezer Rockefeller (b. 21 Sep 1846 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

Gertje, anglicized to Charity, was the second child of Elias McDonald and Susannah Esselstein. Gertje was baptized at the Reformed Church in Claverack, Columbia, New York, USA on 10 Aug 1800. She is probably named for her paternal grandmother, Gertjen Blass. Her husband, William (alternately: Willem) Rockefeller (older variants: Rockenfeller, Rockenfelder) was christened on 24 Apr 1802 at the Reformed Church in West Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. William was a farmer, and later a farm laborer. The fate of her daughter Hannah Christina is unknown; she likely died young (before age 7), as she does not appear with the family in 1840.Charity's son Ebenezer can be assumed to have died before age 4 (he does not appear in the 1850 Federal Census). Sometime in the early 1860s Charity and William moved to Cayuga, Cayuga, New York, USA where their son Jacob had been living since the late 1850s. The 1855 New York State Census has an “R” marked for the column asking if Charity wasn't able to read or write (likely it means should could not read, but was able to write). In November 2002, scanned images from Charity Rockefeller's family Bible were located on eBay, for sale from an estate in Catskill, New York. The Bible has since been sold, but Sylvia Hasenkopf was able to transcribe the pages first. After William's death in 1863, Charity lived with her son Jacob. She died as a result of parotitis (inflammation of the salivary [parotid] glands on the sides of the face). William is buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Cayuga, Cayuga, New York, USA. Charity's burial place is unknown, but presumably somewhere in Cayuga County, New York, USA.

John4 Rockefeller (Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 19 Nov 1820 in Churchtown, Columbia, New York, USA. He died on 07 Jan 1908 in Red Hook, Dutchess, New York, USA. He married (1) Lorentha Decker on 29 Jan 1847 in Churchtown, Columbia, New York, USA. She was born about 1819 in New York, USA. She died after Jun 1865. He married (2) Eleanor Altenbrack in Feb 1870. She was born about 1833 in New York, USA. She died on 22 May 1890 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Lorentha Decker, he had the following children:

i. Alice Rockefeller (b. 01 Jun 1850 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA)

With Eleanor Altenbrack, he had the following children:

ii. Charles W. Rockefeller (b. 20 May 1871 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

John was baptized on 21 Feb 1821 in the St. Thomas Lutheran Church in Churchtown, Columbia, New York, USA. His sponsors were Teal Rockefeller and Lena Wheeler (his paternal grandparents). John and his first wife Lorentha lived on a farm in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA. The farm was worth approximately $2000 in 1850. Compared to his neighbors, John had a smaller farm, as most of his neighbors report their properties to be worth $2300-$3500. John and Lorentha's marriage was witnessed by Catherine Ham and Jacob Ham; the Rev. J.C. Day performed the ceremony at the parsonage. Lorentha's age at marriage is given as 28, while John is 26, this conflicts with later census data which makes Lorentha appear about a year younger than John. According to the 1865 New York State Census, he and Lorentha only ever had the 1 child. She died of unknown causes and her burial place is unknown. In Feb 1870 John remarried to Eleanor or Ellen Altenbrack; his daughter Alice having married the previous year. Alice and her husband continued living with her father until around the time they started their own family. In June of 1875, John and Eleanor's niece Lydia Near, and nephews Millard Ingalls and Douglas Near lived with the family. They are presumably children of Eleanor's sisters. After Eleanor passed John lived with his son Charles in Red Hook, Dutchess, New York, USA where he passed away in 1908. Eleanor's final resting place is unknown, but John is buried in the West Taghkanic Cemetery in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA.

His sponsors were Dederick Miller and Anna Benn. Dederick was a farmer, though not one of the most wealthy in East Taghkanic, NY. In 1860, Dederick was less well off than most of his neighbors. His real estate was worth only $400, while most of his neighbors had farms worth $5000-$8500. By 1870, his estate is worth significantly more and was worth similar amounts as his neighbors. In 1890, Elisabeth is reported as suffering from la grippe. In 1895, she was again listed as sick in the newspaper. Elisabeth died in the fall of 1896. The Rev. J. S. Graham officiated her burial. Her funeral was held at the M.E. Church, she may be buried in the adjoining cemetery. Dederick died in mid-September 1900, his burial is recorded in Churchtown's Lutheran church records. He was buried in West Taghkanic on September 19, 1900. The location of his burial is also unknown. It's possible they are both interred in the West Taghkanic Methodist Church Cemetery, as several of their children are buried there.

Ambrose5 Coons (Elisabeth4, Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 28 May 1846 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA. He died on 25 Aug 1863 in New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

Ambrose was the second son and third child born to his parents. He spent his childhood on his father's farm in Taghkanic, NY. On April 12, 1861, the Civil War officially began, Ambrose was just shy of his 15th birthday. A year and a half later, he and his older brother William Henry both enlisted as privates on 29 Sep 1862 in Taghkanic to serve three years. Ambrose, who was only 16 years old, stood about 5'6" with light colored hair and grey eyes. They were mustered in on 01 Nov 1862 in New York City as part of the 159th New York Infantry, Company C, serving under Col. Henry W. Birge and Col. Homer A. Nelson. The other men from Co. C were principally recruited from Taghkanic, Copake, Stockport, Livingston, Gallatin, Claverack, Stuyvesant, and Germantown, NY. Originally, these men were meant to join the 167th Infantry regiment.

Pictured to the left is the 159th regimental flag (image courtesy of New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs: Military History).

The 159th left New York on 04 Dec 1862 headed for New Orleans, LA where it was assigned to the 3rd Brigade, 4th Division (Cuvier Grover's Division), 19th Corps, Department of the Gulf. It's first major skirmish was near Franklin, LA, called the Battle of Irish Bend (also known to the Confederacy as the Battle of Nerson's Woods). For Ambrose, this was the only battle he would see. The details of the battle are as follows:

"While the other two Union XIX Army Corps divisions comprising the expedition into West Louisiana moved across Berwick Bay towards Fort Bisland, Brig. Gen. Cuvier Grover’s division went up the Atchafalaya River into Grand Lake, intending to intercept a Confederate retreat from Fort Bisland or turn the enemy's position. On the morning of April 13, the division landed in the vicinity of Franklin and scattered Rebel troops attempting to stop them from disembarking. That night, Grover ordered the division to cross Bayou Teche and prepare for an attack towards Franklin at dawn. In the meantime, Confederate Maj. Gen. Richard Taylor had sent some men to meet Grover's threat. On the morning of the 14th, Taylor and his men were at Nerson's Woods, around a mile and a half above Franklin. As Grover's lead brigade marched out a few miles, it encountered Rebels on its right and began skirmishing with them. The fighting became intense; the Rebels attacked, forcing the Yankees to fall back. The gunboat Diana arrived and anchored the Confederate right flank. The Confederates were outnumbered, however, and, as Grover began making dispositions for an attack, they retreated leaving the field to the Union.

As they landed Grover's forces easily pushed back the 2nd Louisiana Cavalry skirmishers and marched toward Franklin. The possibility of having his escape route close Taylor had no choice but to weaken his already inadequate force. The 4th Texas Cavalry and two 6lb guns from the St. Mary's Cannoneers covered the nineteen miles to Franklin in only ninety minutes. The combined force attempted to destroy the bridges over the Teche but the Federals managed a bridgehead and crossed the river. Unable to delay the Grover significantly the two regiments retreated. What they had failed to do militarily Grover now granted them by halting his command. Although Grover knew that "the enemy at this time held a strong position in the wood in our front" he decided to make his move on the following morning. He planned on seizing the crossroads at Franklin to block the line of retreat for Taylor's forces, but first his men would have a good night sleep.

Grover's rest proved just the break that Taylor needed. His primary goal was to prevent Grover from severing the escape route for the men and supplies that were moving back from Fort Bisland. Facing the real possibility of combat with Grover's forces Taylor, angry at Sibley's snub of his attack order at Bisland, reduced him to command of the supply train. He then ordered a phased withdraw before rushing to Franklin to assess the situation. The first units to leave were the 28th Louisiana and the rest of the St. Mary's artillery. The rest of Mouton's command followed. Finally the rear guard of Col. Thomas Green and the other units of Sibley's Brigade with a battery of 3" rifles moved off.

At Franklin, Taylor consulted with Col. W. G. Vincent (2nd LA Cav) and Col. James Reily (4th Texas) and decided to conduct a delay action in the area of Irish Bend. The effort received a boost with the arrival of the 12th Louisiana Battalion from nearby Avery Island. With fewer than 1000 men Taylor deployed a line in Nerson's Woods. He anchored the right of his line on the Teche with the 12th LA Bn, the center was held by the 4th Texas, and the left was held by the 2nd LA Cav and the left on a swamp. Each end was supported by two guns of CPT Florian Cornay's battery. Near dawn 40 men of the 28th Louisiana arrived and extended the left to a impassable swamp formed by Bayou Yokely. On the Teche the Diana, which had accomplished emergency repairs, was available to add her firepower. At dawn the 3rd Brigade troops of Col. Henry Birge led Grover's division out of camp with a "strong line of skirmishers" out front. A two-mile march met the enemy "strongly posted" in a dense wood sheltered by a rail fence.

Early on the morning of the 14th Grover ordered his division forward. They were led from camp by Colonel Henry W. Birge's 3rd Brigade troops. In front of his column Birge had five companies of the 25th Connecticut deployed as skirmishers. They were followed in order by the 26th Maine, one section of the 2nd United States Artillery, the 159th New York and the 13th Connecticut. The remaining 5 companies of the 25th Connecticut were held in reserve. After a march of about two miles the skirmishers on the far right "discovered the enemy posted in the edge of the woods." The two sides exchanged "brisk firing" while the rest of the skirmish force changed front and advanced against the Confederate line. At 200 yards the men were ordered to lie down and engage the enemy while the main body was deployed. The 26th Maine filed into the field and formed on the left of the 25th. They also found cover in the deep ruts of the muddy field. LT Bradley's section of Battery C 2nd US maneuvered into position to fire between the two regiments. They immediately focused their attention on the two guns that had opened from the far left of the Confederate line. The 159th New York joined the line and they were also driven into the prone by the volume of fire that was coming from the Confederate line. Undeterred Colonel Molineaux stood and urged his men forward. As he shouted out "Forward, New York" a ball struck him in the face.

On the far left the 13th Connecticut moved steadily forward, using the Spencer armed men of Company A as skirmishers, to gain an early fire superiority. The other members of the regiment followed using an "advanced firing" method to maintain their firepower advantage and gained the edge of the woods. The Confederate troops in this section of the line, the 12th Louisiana Battalion and two 6lb guns of the St Mary's artillery, now in close contact and badly outnumbered by the enemy fled. The unexpected departure of these men uncovered the right flank of the 4th Texas. The Federal troops wasted no time in taking advantage of the situation. They started working up the Confederate line and gobbling up prisoners and creating confusion. In a desperate attempt to save the disintegrating situation Col. Henry Gray ordered an attack by his 28th Louisiana. Before the order for the 159th New York to attack could be carried out the Gray's men surged out of the woods with a yell in "a dashing charge". The other units along the Confederate line joined in the impromptu attack. Low on ammunition and momentarily leaderless the 159th broke for the rear. The panic spread through the 26th Maine and the 25th Connecticut as the New Yorkers left the line. The entire right of the Union line collapsed onto the 1st Brigade troops "forming to come to their support." Grover had no choice but to recall the 13th Connecticut before they were left dangerously exposed in their advanced position.

The passage of the retreating men from the Union right created disarray in the ranks and no forward movement was made while the lines were dressed. During the pause Taylor got word that the trains and Bisland troops had passed Franklin about 0930. He was free to begin his withdraw. An uneasy Grover cancelled further action until 1400 when he ordered the 12th Maine (2nd Bde) to feel for the enemy. When they entered the woods they found the Confederates gone. Grover had waited so long that even the rear guard had made an uncontested get away. He pushed on toward Franklin but encountered only BG Emory coming up in pursuit of Mouton's men from Bisland. Against all odds and despite command failures Taylor managed to save his small army. The coordination necessary for success had eluded Banks. The only great loss for the Confederates was the Diana. She had been used to cover the Confederate right but her faulty machinery caused CPT Oliver Semmes to burn her at the conclusion of the fight." (Civil War Wiki.)

Ambrose was wounded in action during the battle and was brought to the St. Louis General Hospital in New Orleans, LA where he died as a result of his wounds and chronic diarrhea on 25 Aug 1863. He was buried nearby. Note another Ambrose Coons from Taghkanic, NY also enlisted. He was killed in action in May 1863 at Port Hudson. This Ambrose was married with two children.

Margareth4 Rockefeller (Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 04 Mar 1824 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 23 May 1889 in Sennett, Cayuga, New York, USA. She married Horace M. Walker about 1854. He was born about 1826 in Canada. He died on 21 Jun 1897 in Auburn, Cayuga, New York, USA.

With Horace M. Walker, she had the following children:

i. Catherine Walker (b. 1855 in Mentz, Cayuga, New York, USA)

ii. Harvey N. Walker (b. Aug 1857 in Cayuga County, New York, USA)

Margareth grew up in Taghkanic, NY. In 1850, she had moved out of her family's household and was living with Samuel A. Tanner, the future husband of her younger sister Maria Rockefeller, along with several other young men and women. Before 1855, Margareth had moved to Mentz, Cayuga, New York, USA. She was now married and a mother to a young daughter. Her sister Maria was living with her. They were still in the household of Samuel A. Tanner. Their daughter Catherine died before June 1860. Her burial location is unknown. Horace had been a prosperous dairy farmer in Auburn while he and his family lived in Montezuma, NY. In the late 1860s and early 70s, Margareth's nephew Grovenor Shook resided with them. By 1875 Horace had taken a job at the Clapp Manufacturing Company. He moved the family to Owasco, NY. At the time of Margareth's death in 1889, she and Horace had been living at the A.J. Sander's farm in Sennett, NY. Her burial location is unknown. After his wife's death, Horace resided with his son at 292 West Genesee Street in Auburn, NY. He entered into an increasingly deeper depression. Although he maintained a small garden where he grew potatoes and other vegetables at the Driving park, Horace decided to end his own life. After a trip to his garden, he ingested Paris Green (a type of insecticide used on potato vine). He made it as far as his friend's house before becoming violently ill. When his friend inquired why Horace did not return home and send for a doctor, Horace responded that his daughter-in-law, Susan, had kicked him out of the house and told him not to return. He died later that Monday night. Horace's burial location is unknown.

In 1875, the census taker notes that Jacob cannot read or write, this is the only time this information is recorded, no other census data indicates Jacob was illiterate. As Jacob and Louisa entered their 70s, their daughter Carrie and her son Fred moved back in with them. May 19, 1908 proved to be a fatal day for Jacob. While working in his barn, he was kicked by one of his horses. He expired at 11 o'clock in the evening the following night. Four years later, Louisa fell seriously ill, though the disease is unknown. She and Jacob are buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Port Byron, Cayuga, New York, USA.

She and William lived in Gallatin, NY. William was a farm laborer. The family was doing well in 1870, William's real estate was worth $1000. By 1880, William doesn't report any real estate or personal estate. He also reports he had been out of work for four months during the census year. After William's death, Eliza lived with her daughter Jeannette in Copake, NY where her will was probated in March 1915. Although she had ten children, she was only outlived by four. She and William are buried in Ancram Union Cemetery in Ancram, NY. The older William lived to be at least four years of age. Although he is listed as six years old in 1860, it is most likely his age was mistaken with his sister Ophelia who is listed as four. This is supported by the 1855 NYS Census which shows Ophelia being about one month old, while William does not appear at all. William died before the 1865 census year. Eliza reported that she had had nine children, though only eight appear in the household. His burial location is unknown. Their youngest child, Norman appears in the 1870 US Federal Census being about one year of age. He died on 07 Feb 1871 in Gallatin, NY. He is buried in the Ancram Union Cemetery in Ancram, NY.

Maria4 Rockefeller (Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 10 Sep 1829 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 09 May 1919 in Junius, Seneca, New York, USA. She married Samuel A. Tanner, son of Alexander Tanner and Nancy E. Merritt, about 1859 in Cayuga County, New York, USA. He was born about 1816 in Dutchess County, New York, USA. He died on 07 Feb 1889 in Tyre, Seneca, New York, USA.

With Samuel A. Tanner, she had the following children:

i. Ida M. Tanner (b. 1860 in Montezuma, Cayuga, New York, USA)

Maria grew up in Columbia County, New York. Her future husband Samuel had been born just to the south of her in Dutchess County, New York about thirteen years earlier. Maria's oldest sister Margareth lived in Samuel's household in 1850. Maria, her sister and her sister's husband and infant daughter lived in Samuel's household in Mentz, NY in 1855. Samuel was a wealthy farmer during this period. His real estate was worth $10,000 in 1860 which is approximately $272,000 today. In the late 1860s Samuel's farm went under and he declared bankrupcy on January 25, 1869 in Tyre, Seneca, New York, USA. In 1870, Samuel was listed as having no occupation. Shortly thereafter, he opened a retail grocery store. In 1879, his house and his store caught fire on a Thursday night. He was able to rebuild his store and in 1880 was still listed as a retail grocer. In March 1884 the family moved into the Lewis Wolf home in Tyre, NY. Maria moved into her daughter's home after her husband's death in 1889. She moved to Junius, NY with their family in the early 1910s. Samuel and Maria's burial locations are unknown.

Susanna4 Rockefeller (Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 14 Jun 1831 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 04 Jan 1918 in Kinderhook, Columbia, New York, USA. She married Elkanah J. Decker, son of Jacob J. Decker and Caty Hagerdone, about 1850. He was born on 04 Dec 1827 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 27 Jun 1910 in Livingston, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Elkanah J. Decker, she had the following children:

i. Addison Decker (b. 29 Jan 1854 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ii. Norman D. Decker (b. 10 Feb 1856 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iii. Sylvanus Decker (b. 21 Jun 1857 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iv. Mary C. Decker (b. 15 Jun 1860 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

v. Jessie Decker (b. about 1863 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vi. Alice B. Decker (b. 29 Feb 1868 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vii. Franklin G. Decker (b. Jun 1870 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

Susanna, later called Susan, was named for her maternal grandmother, Susanna (Esselstein) McDonald. She was baptized on August 31, 1831 in Churchtown, NY. Susan and Elkanah likely married in the second half of 1850, after the census was taken. Elkanah was shown living with his uncle in 1850, and Susanna has not been located yet. She was not living in her parents' household. It's possible they had a child older than Addison who did not survive. In 1865, Susan reports she was the mother of six children, but only five children were named. Elkanah and Susan had a farm in Livingston, NY. Elkanah registered for the draft in 1863, but he did not serve in the Civil War. After retirement, Elkanah and Susan moved to the Nixdorf Farm in Valatie, NY. He died there as a result of stomach cancer. After her husband's death, Susan moved into the household of her daughter, Mrs. Myron (Mary) Van Deusen, in Kinderhook, NY. Susan and Elkanah are buried in the St. Thomas Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery in Churchtown, Columbia, New York, USA. Their daughter Jessie died on 13 Feb 1883 in Livingston, Columbia, New York, USA. She may be buried in her parents' cemetery plot in Churchtown, NY; at least her name was recorded on their headstone. It has been suggested Jessie had a son in 1878 named Frederick Elmer Potts, son of John Potts, who was born in Churchtown, NY. Jessie would only have been 15 years old, and the Decker family is very large. Their daughter Alice's fate is unknown. She likely married, and she is reported to have died on 22 Feb 1910, her burial location is unknown.

Henry4 Rockefeller (Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 28 Jan 1835 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 30 Dec 1904 in Gilford, Tuscola, Michigan, USA. He married Hannah Maria Gertrude Coye, daughter of Kellogg A. Coye and Clarissa Herrick, on 06 Nov 1864 in Port Byron, Cayuga, New York, USA. She was born on 18 Aug 1844 in Cayuga County, New York, USA. She died on 09 Dec 1926 in Bay City, Bay, Michigan, USA.

With Hannah Maria Gertrude Coye, he had the following children:

i. Ellsworth Rockefeller (b. 22 Jul 1870 in Cayuga County, New York, USA)

ii. Rose Bell Rockefeller (b. 09 Oct 1873 in Bay City, Bay, Michigan, USA)

Henry was baptized on March 27, 1835 in the St. Thomas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Churchtown, NY. Henry worked on his father's farm in his youth. When he came of age, he moved out of his father's household and began working on the farm of John Smith in Taghkanic, NY. Henry was probably in Cayuga Co., NY by 1860, though he hasn't been located in the census records. His wife Maria was born and raised in Cayuga Co., NY. Henry began following the trade of grocery merchant while in Cayuga Co. Henry and Maria appear in the 1867 Bay City, Michigan directory, indicating they'd moved there late 1866 or early 1867. The two travelled back and forth from Bay City, MI to Mentz, NY frequently. In 1870, they were enumerated with Maria's parents. At the time she would have been 7-8 months pregnant with her first child. The exact reason Henry and Maria were in New York at this time is unknown. It could've been business so Maria took advantage and went to see her folks, one of her parents may have been ill, she might have wanted to be with her mother during childbirth, the list can go on. Their son Ellsworth was most likely born in New York (only his death record states he was born in Michigan). Shortly after Ellsworth's birth, the family returned to their home in Bay City, MI. In 1880, the family lived in a house on 11th Street. Ellsworth died on 15 May 1887 in Bay City, he'd been suffering from Typhoid Fever. His burial location is unknown, but he may be buried in Green Ridge Cemetery in Bay City, Bay, Michigan, USA.

By 1900, Henry had purchased a house at 413 Hampton Street in Bay City. He held a series of odd jobs around this time including tree trimmer. Two years later Henry suffered a stroke. Although he survived, he and Maria moved in with their daughter in Reese, MI. He died there as a result of apoplexy in 1904. After Henry's death, Maria continued to live with her daughter on Munger Rd. in Reese/Merritt, MI. In 1926, while visiting her friend Mrs. Andrew Wald at 1813 Columbus Ave., Maria took ill. After three days, she died at her friend's home. Henry and Maria are buried in the Green Ridge Cemetery in Bay City, Bay, Michigan, USA.

Peter4 Rockefeller (Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 10 Nov 1837 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 31 Jul 1899 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. He married Sarah A. Teator, daughter of David Teator and Hannah Pechtel, about 1865. She was born on 27 Dec 1839 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 18 Oct 1915 in South Egremont, Berkshire, Massachusetts, USA.

With Sarah A. Teator, he had the following children:

i. James Edward Rockefeller (b. 30 Aug 1866 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

ii. Mary Ida Rockefeller (b. 30 Aug 1866 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

iii. Sarah J. Rockefeller (b. about 1868 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iv. David Peter Rockefeller (b. Oct 1869 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA)

v. Joanna Rockefeller (b. 24 Mar 1873 in Claverack, Columbia, New York, USA)

vi. Granville L. Rockefeller (b. 29 Apr 1875 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

vii. Millard Filmore Rockefeller (b. 19 Mar 1877 in Snydertown, Columbia, New York, USA)

viii. Arthur Rockefeller (b. May 1879 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ix. Blanche E. Rockefeller (b. about 1881 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA)

Peter was baptized on October 21, 1839 in Churchtown, NY along with his one month old sister, Julia. The reason for delaying his baptism is not known, perhaps the priest had not made it back to the parish yet, or an illness prevented the family from bringing Peter for baptism. In 1850, Peter is living with his family in Gallatin, NY where was was still attending school and not working. When he was about 14 or 15, Peter would've finished school and begun working as a farm laborer. When he was only 17, Peter was already living out of his parents' home. He was working as a farm laborer for William Barringer. Peter's whereabouts in the 1860s aren't known. He doesn't appear to have registered for the draft in 1863, nor does he seem to have served in any other state. He and Sarah likely didn't marry until late 1865, as in June 1865 she is enumerated with her mother and family and her children. Sarah had grown up in Claverack, NY. About 1860, she married her first husband, William Proper. He likely died around the time their youngest son was born in the spring of 1865. Sarah and William had three children: Frank (1861-bef 1870), Ada (1862-bef 1910) and Martin J. (1865-1918). William's cause of death is unknown. After her marriage to Peter, Sarah had nine more children, with their first pregnancy resulting in twins.

Peter and his family lived on a farm in Copake, NY. He died at the age of 61, from unknown causes. Peter is buried in the North Copake Cemetery in Craryville, Columbia, New York, USA. Sarah likely continued to live in Copake after her husband's death in 1899. However, she has not been found in the 1900 Federal Census. In 1905, Sarah can be found living in her daughter Blanche's household in Copake, NY. By 1910, Sarah had moved to her nephew, Eugene Stupplebean's household in Egremont, MA. She may have died there in 1915, though there is no record of her death in Massachusetts. Sarah may be buried in the North Copake Cemetery with Peter, her name and birthdate appear on the stone, but not her death date.

Julia4 Rockefeller (Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 21 Sep 1839 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 05 Mar 1907 in Tyre, Seneca, New York, USA. She married James Davidson about 1859. He was born in May 1826 in Ireland. He died on 24 Jan 1912 in Tyre, Seneca, New york, USA.

With James Davidson, she had the following children:

i. William Davidson (b. Feb 1862 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

Julia was baptized on October 21, 1839 in Churchtown, NY. Her older brother Peter was also baptized that day. By the time Julia had entered the family, her oldest siblings were moving out of the household, her first nephew (William Henry Coons) was only four years her junior. James was born in Ireland from where he emigrated around 1844 when he was about 18 years old. Other than his son, no other members of James's family were mentioned in his 1912 obituary, only Julia's family. Julia has not been found in the 1860 and 1870 Federal Censuses. She and James must continue to live in Columbia County for a short time, as their son William was born there in 1862. By 1875, the Davidsons had moved to Montezuma, NY. Her cousin John McDonald's son George (age 5) appears in her household then. George's mother had died in 1873, after which his father was unable to maintain a household. During this time, James worked as a farm laborer. Less than five years later, the family moved to Savannah, Wayne, New York, USA. After that, they moved to Tyre, NY where they lived on a farm. James became a citizen before the turn of the century. Their son cared for them in their old age. Their burial locations are unknown.

Philip D.4 Rockefeller (Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 10 Mar 1841 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA. He died on 11 Jul 1930 in Tucson, Pima, Arizona, USA. He married Mary Jeannette Herrick, daughter of Asa Warner Herrick and Eliza Tifft, about 1863 in Cayuga County, New York, USA. She was born on 24 Aug 1844 in Montezuma, Cayuga, New York, USA. She died on 29 Mar 1936 in Tucson, Pima, Arizona, USA.

With Mary Jeannette Herrick, he had the following children:

i. Clara E. Rockefeller (b. 21 Jan 1868 in Cayuga County, New York, USA)

ii. Fisher D. Rockefeller (b. 02 Mar 1875 in Auburn, Cayuga, New York, USA)

Philip grew up in Gallatin, NY. His younger brother Mortimer was born on his 4th birthday. Philip likely finished the seventh or eighth grade; in 1855 he was living in Copake and the record indicates he had only moved there within the last year, so when he was about 13 years old. Though it's possible he'd moved to Copake to attain further education. He too moved to Montezuma, Cayuga, New York, USA around the same time as his parents and several of his older siblings in the late 1850s. It was here he met his wife Mary. She'd grown up in Montezuma as the oldest of three surviving children. Philip and Mary, along with eight couples drove new buggies outfitted with "daper ponies" eight miles from their homes in Montezuma to Auburn where they married in the parlor of the leading hotel. After the ceremony, they all returned to Montezuma for a reception at the home of one of Philip's sisters. Maria is the most likely candidate, as her husband was the most well off and was very wealthy. Margareth could equally have been the hostess for her brother as she was the eldest sister of the three and ceremony may dictate that she be the one. Julia is the least likely candidate, she had only recently married herself and had a child under two years old. Philip and Mary lived in a house built by her grandfather in 1844. In 1875, Charity was living with Philip's family. However, at the time of her death, she was living with her son Jacob.

Philip Rockefeller and wife Mary J. Herrick, photo courtesy of K. Ryck.

In 1913, Philip and Mary along with their two children moved to Tucson, Pima, Arizona, USA. They lived with their son and his wife at 1043 N. 1st Street. In 1930, Philip indicated he was a veteran of the Civil War. However, in the 1865 New York State Census, Philip does not report any information about serving, even though there is a specific section for recording the company, dates served, rank, etc. Nor did Philip register for the draft in Cayuga County, New York in 1863 (if he had already enlisted he would not appear in the draft record). No other supporting documents have been found that show Philip served in the War. Philip died at the age of 89, his death certificate indicates that senility caused his death. Mary died at the age of 91, 6 years later, as a result of arteriosclerosis. They are buried in the Evergreen Memorial Park in their family plot in Tucson, Pima, Arizona, USA.

Charles Mortimer4 Rockefeller (Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 10 Mar 1845 in Taghkanic, Columbia, New York, USA. He died on 10 Jan 1918 in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA. He married Pauline Margaret Herrick, daughter of Elisha Fitch Herrick and Margaret Fisher, in 1870. She was born in Aug 1843 in Cayuga County, New York, USA. She died on 30 Jan 1926 in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA.

With Pauline Margaret Herrick, he had the following children:

i. Herrick Rockefeller (b. 25 Dec 1877 in Fox Ridge, Cayuga, New York, USA)

ii. Ethel Castella Rockefeller (b. Aug 1881 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iii. Linus Frederick Rockefeller (b. 05 Jun 1886 in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA)

Charles went by the name of Mortimer. He was born on his next oldest brother's (Philip) fourth birthday. When he was about 14 or 15 years of age, he left his father's household and began working as a farm laborer. In 1860, Mortimer can be found in the household of John and Matilda Davidson, still in his hometown of Taghkanic. He had a fair complexion, light eyes (probably blue) and dark brown hair. He only stood at 5'9" when he was 18 years old. On September 29, 1862, Mortimer enlisted in the Union Army for three years. He was a private in Company C of the 159th NY Infantry. He was wounded in the Battle of Irish Bend on April 14, 1863 near Franklin, St. Mary, Louisiana, USA. At this time he likely was shot, the bullet never removed and carried to his grave. Twelve days prior to the battle, Mortimer's father William died at his home in Cayuga County, New York. Mortimer likely had not yet received this news before the battle. Mortimer was noted for his soldierly conduct and valor in the face of the enemy. He was mustered out with his company on October 12, 1865 in Augusta, Columbia, Georgia, USA.

After his discharge, Mortimer likely headed back to Cayuga County, New York. His wife Pauline grew up in Cayuga County, and Mortimer appears in her mother's household with her and siblings in 1870. Her younger brother Linus F. Herrick later married Mortimer's niece Ophelia Jane Shook. Pauline's name is given as Margaret Paulina in her 1926 obituary. She may have always gone by Pauline/Paulina because her mother bore the same first name: Margaret. After their marriage, Mortimer and Pauline moved to Livingston, Columbia, New York, USA. In addition to farming, Mortimer and Pauline ran a boarding house for the local miners. Around 1885, Mortimer and Pauline and their growing family removed to Catskill, Greene, New York, USA. Mortimer also began to follow the trade of carpentry. He later became a millwright at the Eastern Paving Brick Company which made shale bricks. On November 20, 1900 around 1:30 or 2 in the afternoon, Mortimer noticed the roof of Kiln #9 was swaying. He and other men began to stabelize it, but during the repair the 11-inch-thick brick roof collapsed. One man, Erasmo Cazaragola died, and many others were injured, including Mortimer. He suffered three broken and mashed fingers on his right hand, multiple lacerations on his left side, and his left hand had to be amputated. Mortimer retired not long after. For a while, Mortimer and Pauline shared their home with their daughter Ethel and her family. After Mortimer's death, Pauline continued to live with her daughter on Allen Street. Although Mortimer's burial location is not known, his wife was buried in the Jefferson Rural Cemetery, now part of the Town of Catskill Cemetery in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA. Mortimer is likely also buried here.

Herrick5 Rockefeller (Mortimer4, Charity3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 25 Dec 1877 in Fox Ridge, Cayuga, New York, USA. He died on 05 Jan 1943 in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA. He married Anna M. Smith, daughter of Jacob Clarke Smith and Mary Louisa Saxe, on 06 Mar 1898 in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA. Anna was born on 06 May 1877 in New York, USA. She died on 05 Sep 1965 in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA.

Herrick was born in the hamlet of Fox Ridge, just north of Montezuma, NY. His parents had likely been visiting their families over the Christmas season, but maintained their own home in Livingston, NY where Herrick spent his early childhood. He moved with his family to Catskill, NY in 1885. According to his draft cards (1918, 1942), Herrick stood tall at 5’10”. He had grey eyes and brown hair with a ruddy complexion and a mole on the right side of his forehead. In his youth he was considered stout, and in 1942 his weight was recorded as 152lbs. His wife Anna’s family was from Catskill, NY but were living in Saugerties, Ulster, New York, USA in the summer of 1880. Anna had two brothers and six sisters; her father worked as a butcher. Sometime before 1892 her family had moved to Hunter, Greene, New York, USA.

After their marriage, Herrick and Anna rented rooms at 436 Main Street sharing the house with Irving H. Clum and his family. Eventually, they purchased their own home at 117 Summit Avenue in Catskill, NY. Herrick worked as a salesman for the Day & Holt Company located on Main Street in Catskill, NY. The company, now Day & Holt Hardware is still in business, located at 349 Main Street, Catskill, NY. In her 20s, Anna worked as a seamstress, but eventually was able to stay home. In 1910, they rented rooms to George Doran, a 28-year-old chemist. When Herrick registered for the draft on September 12, 1918, he was working as a chauffeur for the Day & Holt Co., and in 1920 he is listed as a plumber working for the same company, though by 1925 he’s back to being listed as a salesman in the census. In the early 1920s Herrick and Anna sold their house and moved to 412 Main Street where they shared a house with Floyd Ward, his wife Ethel and their infant daughter Louise. They celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary here; Anna through Herrick a surprise party with close friends. Shortly thereafter they purchased another home, worth $9000 in 1930 (but only $3500 in 1940), at 287 Main Street. On September 7, 1927, Anna fell six feet down the house’s backporch steps. She fractured one ankle and sprained the other.

During the early twentieth century, Herrick began to suffer from a weak and lame back, which also affected his bladder causing him to have to urinate frequently. He claimed he could not remember how or exactly when he’d injured his back. After trying several remedies for his bladder and kidney issues, he came across Doan’s Kidney Pills at a local drug store. The pills seem to have done the trick, as he gave several testimonials claiming the pills had rid him of all back pain and kidney troubles. The first was given on January 20, 1908, the second on November 24, 1916, and a third on September 23, 1919. These testimonials appeared in newspaper ads run by the Foster-Milburn Co. based in Buffalo, NY.

At some point during his career with Day & Holt, Herrick was unloading radiators from a truck parked on a small bridge which connected to the second floor of the barn at the rear of the Max Halm garage on North Street in Catskill, NY. The truck broke through the planking and sent Herrick and the radiator 15 feet down the embankment on New Street. Luckily, Herrick only suffered some bruises. On the morning of February 9, 1930, Herrick went to work like usual to care for the heater. Upon his arrival, he found the backdoor ajar and immediately called his manager. The previous night, unknown culprits had broken into the building in an attempt to break into the safe. They cut off its hinges, but were unable to open it. The police surmised that either the culprits gave up or were scared away. Nothing else at the store had been disturbed.

Herrick and Anna did not have any children. However, in Septemeber of 1906, their local paper reported a baby girl had been born to Herrick and Anna Rockefeller on September 9th. According to both the 1900 and 1910 US Federal Census, Anna had not had children. Of course, it isn’t uncommon for a woman to report 0 children born to her if the child did not survive. A search of the New York State Birth Index came back with one result: Luella C. Rockefellow [sic. Louella C. Rockefeller] born September 8, 1906 in Catskill, NY. However, Louella’s parents are Herbert C. Rockefeller and his wife Agnes. Searching the New York State Death Index, no female Rockefeller (or other variant misspellings) would match a 3- or 4-year-old. Did the newspaper misreport the name of the parents? Or did Herrick and Anna have a daughter who died in infancy and managed to not be recorded in either index? It seems more likely the paper was wrong on the name of the parents as well as the day of birth of the daughter.

In August of 1919, Herrick and Anna, his sister Ethel and her husband, and his mother spent time touring the Finger Lakes Region of New York. They spent the first weekend of September at the home of their friends’, Mr. and Mrs. Romaine Fisher, at 27 Lewis Street. Herrick and Anna also took vacations to New York City and other areas of New York over the years. Herrick died suddenly in early 1943. His and Anna’s burial places are unknown, but presumably in Catskill, NY.
