John W. McDonald

John William3 McDonald (Elias2, Collin1) was born on 07 Jun 1817 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 24 Dec 1881 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA. He married (1) Frances M. Winship, daughter of William Winship and Eliza S. Ashley, about 1852. She was born on 04 Aug 1835 in Connecticut, USA. She died on 19 May 1857 in Oneida, Madison, New York, USA. He married (2) Elizabeth B. "Betsy" Mills, daughter of Jesse Mills and Hannah Bastow, on 06 Jan 1858. She was born on 07 Sep 1835 in Lancashire, England. She died on 11 Oct 1897 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA.

With Frances M. Winship, he had the following children:

i. Frances Edith McDonald (b. 23 May 1853 in Lenox, Madison, New York, USA)

ii. Eliza Gertrude "Ida" McDonald (b. 06 Aug 1855 in Lenox, Madison, New York, USA)

With Elizabeth B. "Betsy" Mills, he had the following children:

John was born in Columbia county, New York; the youngest son of Elias and Susanna Esselstein McDonald. He was christened on July 06, 1817 in the St. Thomas Evangelical Lutheran Church in Churchtown, Columbia, New York, USA. His sponsors were Philip Coons and Elizabeth Finger. John learned the trade of carpentry at an early age. Although he has not been found in the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, his first wife, Frances M. Winship, is living with her family in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA. The couple married around 1852, presumably. Between 1852 and 1853, John and Frances moved to Lenox, Madison, New York, USA, where they started their family. Both daughters, Frances and Eliza, were born in Lenox. Frances died a few years later in May of 1857. She was buried in the old Elizabeth Street Cemetery in Oneida, Madison, New York, USA. In 1913 the cemetery was converted into a park, and now is the location of the Willard Prior Elementary School. Frances's headstone was likely laid under if neither of her grandsons were able to be reached.

On January 6, 1858, John married his second wife, Betsy Mills. According to a granddaughter, Betsy came to America from England in 1850 when she was just 14 years old to learn the trade of dressmaking. Betsy's 1897 obituary states she didn't come to America until 1857; but it could be meant that was when she moved to the Utica area. Betsy was the only child born to her parents Jesse and Hannah (Bastow) Mills. According to the family records, Betsy came to America with her mother (but it was probably her mother's family, as her other died in 1839). In the 1855 New York State Census, a Betsey B. Mills, age 19 and born in England, was living in the household of Eri J. Hubbard in Burlington, Otsego, New York, USA. The record indicates she had been living in Burlington since 1853. Her father Jesse died in 1873 but no location is given, it seems he remained in England all his days. John, Betsy, Frances and Eliza, and Hannah settled in Westmoreland, Oneida, New York, USA by 1860. Hannah died on November 30, 1862, five days later on December 5th, Eliza died. The final resting places of both girls are unknown.

By 1865, the McDonalds were living in Utica, NY. According to the 1865 New York State Census, John mainly worked in Utica. It also shows that John did not serve as a soldier in the Civil War. The growing McDonald family moved around a lot during the 1860s and 70s. Some of their addresses include 34 1/2 Kimble Rd (1868), 21 Leah St (1869), 38 Warren St (1870), and on Chenango Ave near Cottage Pl (1871). After that, John moved his family to the village of New York Mills in New Hartford, NY. The family likely attended St. James' Episcopal Church, as Betsy was a member in the 1890s. John died on Christmas Eve 1881 in Faxton Hospital. He is buried in Glenside Cemetery in New York Mills, Oneida, New York, USA. After John's death, Betsy returned to Utica, NY. From 1894-1895 she resided at 72 New Hartford Ave with her son Henry and his family. Her oldest surviving daughter, Sarah Alice, and her family lived next door at 74 New Hartford Ave. In 1896, Betsy moved in with her daughter Sarah Alice Leard and moved with the family to 30 Noyes St. Betsy died there on October 11, 1897. Betsy had been suffering from dropsy (now called edema) which is the accumulation of water in the soft tissues. Dropsy itself is a result of an underlying cause, typically kidney disease or congestive heart failure. Her condition left her bed ridden the last week of her life. Betsy is buried in Glenside Cemetery with John.

Frances Edith4 McDonald (John3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 23 May 1853 in Lenox, Madison, New York, USA. She died 09 Aug 1906 in Albany, Albany, New York, USA. She married Henry M. Newland, son of Joseph W. Newland and Mary E., about 1872. He as born in Jun 1854 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA. He died on 22 Apr 1910 in Albany, Albany, New York, USA.

i. William Henry Newland (b. 23 Nov 1875 in Whitestown, Oneida, New York, USA)

ii. Linus Dean Newland (b. 29 Oct 1877 in New York, USA)

Frances's middle name is either Edith (the name under which she appears in the 1855 New York State census) or Elizabeth (as recorded by her niece Mildred Wakefield Day). She spent her early childhood in Lenox, Madison, New York, USA; but her mother died 4 days before her 4th birthday. Shortly thereafter her father remarried and relocated the family to Westmoreland and later Utica, Oneida, New York, USA. Frances likely attended school until about age 12 or 14, after which she began working in a cotton mill. In 1872 she married Henry Newland, who grew up in Utica, NY. His father had been a machinist and he himself was a molder. They lived in Whitestown, NY in the mid-1870s. By 1880, the family had moved to Amsterdam, Montgomery, New York, USA where Henry found employment in a foundry. By 1892 the Newlands were living in Albany, Albany, New York, USA. Frances and Henry lived at 91 Second St in 1900. Frances was enumerated twice in this census, once on June 1st at her home, and once in the household of her son Linus and his family on June 5th. She was presumably staying there to help Linus and Carrie take care of their new baby. Frances died in 1906 and Henry followed four years later in 1910. They are both interred at Graceland Cemetery in Albany, Albany, New York, USA in section B, lot 17, graves 1 and 2.

She was born on 27 Nov 1892 in Massachusetts, USA. She died on 21 Jan 1985 in Attleboro, Bristol, Massachusetts, USA.

William was born November 23, 1874, though by 1900 and in 1942 he claims to be born in Nov 1884. However, he appears to be 6 months old in June 1875 according to the 1875 New York State Census. William graduated high school around 1892 and married his first wife Selma three years later. William worked as a compositor in the print industry. He was about 5'6" and had a ruddy complexion and brown eyes. In 1900, he and Selma were living at 136 Clinton Ave in Albany, NY. Selma reports she had not ever had any children. William and Selma moved around quite a bit, having resided at 83 Central Ave (1905), 429 Delaware Ave (1907), and 11 Marshall St (1910) in Albany, and later at 1726 Union St (1915) in Schenectady, Schenectady, New York, USA. Selma's sister Edith also began living with them between 1915 and 1920. By 1920, William had taken a job in Boston, eventually working for the Boston Herald-Traveler located at 80  Mason St in Boston, MA by 1942. Sometime before 1930 William bought a house at 36 Worcester St in Belmont, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA. Selma died that winter, and it must have been a crushing blow to William. He quickly remarried a divorcée by the name of Celia Kramer only 7 months later. They were married by John E. Casham, the Justice of the Peace in Windham, Rockingham, New Hampshire, USA. It's unknown whether Celia died before 1939 or if she and William divorced in the 1930s. Selma is buried in Graceland Cemetery in Albany, Albany, New York, USA. In section B,  lot 17, grave 3. Grave 4 was meant for William, but remains unused. Celia's date of death and final resting place are unknown. He and his third wife, Doris, continued to live at his home in Belmont, MA. In 1940, William reported that he worked 44 hours the week of March 24-30. He and Doris are buried in Belmont Cemetery in Belmont, Middlesex, Massachussetts, USA in lot 135, section M.

Sarah Alice4 McDonald (John3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 30 Sep 1860 in Walesville, Oneida, New York, USA. She died 26 Jul 1948 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA. She married Edward James Leard, son of Oliver Leard and Margaret, on 25 Nov 1891 in New York Mills, Oneida, New York, USA. He was born 16 Jan 1853 in (French) Canada. He died on 29 Jun 1939 in Binghamton, Broome, New York, USA.

i. Stuart Prescott Leard (b. 27 May 1893 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA)

ii. Donald Fremont Leard (b. 04 Aug 1895 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA)

iii. Marie Hannah Leard (b. 21 Jan 1898 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA)

iv. Alice Marion Leard (b. 20 Jul 1900 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA)

Sarah Alice was the eldest surviving child of John and Betsy (Mills) McDonald. Her older sister Hannah and half-sister Eliza died when she was two years old. Sarah worked in the local cotton mills with her siblings in the late 1870s and early 1880s. She also found work as a seamstress, a trade she practiced for over 40 years. She cared for her aging and sick mother after her father's death in 1881. Sarah and Ed married at her mother's home in New York Mills on November 25, 1891 by the Rev. J. D. Parker. Her husband, Edward, had come to the United States from Canada when he was a young boy (probably around 1861). He was the youngest of eleven children. His brother Francis X. Leard lived in the Utica area and a sister Marie Leard lived in New York City where Edward and Sarah's daughters and nieces would visit her.

Edward was a general laborer, holding jobs such as milk dealer, shipping clerk, and general handyman. He and Sarah Alice made their home at 240 Sunset Ave (later re-numbered 422 and now 1330). In 1892, Sarah's youngest sister Martha moved in with her and Ed. Martha was seven months pregnant and recently widowed. Her son, Willard Pankhurst, bears Leard  as his middle name, in honor of what Sarah and Edward did for Martha. In 1896, Betsy moved in with the Leards at 30 Noyes St. She lived with her daughter until her death in October 1897. Sarah's nephew Willard continued to live with the family while attending school after Martha re-married and moved to West Winfield, NY in 1902. He'd been hospitalized for ten days before passing at the State Hospital in Binghamton, NY. After Edward's death, Sarah lived with her daughter Marie and her two children in Cortland, NY. They lived at 3 N. Church Street. She became ill in 1940 and moved back to Clinton, NY where she lived at 87 Mulberry St, near her daughter Alice (Leard) Williams and her family. Henry grew up in New Hartford, NY. His wife Mary was born in Wales and came to New York on the Wyoming on 21 Apr 1877 with her family. Her parents died when she was young and her older sisters raised her and her younger siblings. Henry began working in the cotton mills by 1880. He later learned the trade of mule spinner and eventually became a boss mule spinner. He married Mary either in late 1886 or early 1887 in Utica, NY. She became a citizen around 1890. In 1895, Henry's mother Betsy lived with the family at 72 New Hartford Ave., she moved out in 1896. Henry enlisted as a private in Company B, 1st Infantry on 06 Dec 1898 for a term of three years. He later transferred to Company G. Before his honorable discharge on 05 Dec 1901, Henry was stationed at the Pinar del Rio Barracks in Cuba and served in the Philippines. Letters he wrote home to his sisters Sarah Alice and Mary Hannah were published in the local Utica papers. He described how miserable the conditions were, how hot and humid and wet. That the natives were kind to your face, but would just as soon kill you when you turned your back. His camp was about 400 miles outside Manila, but they were forced to change position frequently. While he was gone, Mary moved to 15 Milgate St. with her daughter Bessie. She was working as a spinner in Plant 6 of the Utica Knitting Co.  J. Howard Smith, a lineman for Western Union, was the other occupant in the house. After a year at home with his family, Henry re-enlisted on 11 Dec 1902 in Syracuse, NY with Company K of the 23rd Infantry. He was discharged on 21 Apr 1903. Around this time, he and Mary divorced. Bessie Isabella5 McDonald (Henry4, John3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 23 Sep 1887 in New York Mills, Oneida, New York, USA. She died on 26 Feb 1970 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA. She married carl William Hoffman, son of Henry G. Hoffman and Wilhelmina "Minnie" Gunther, on 19 Sep 1906 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA. He was born on 26 Apr 1885 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA. He died on 25 Jan 1965 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA.

With Carl William Hoffman, she had the following children:

i. Ralph Emerson Hoffman (b. 13 Apr 1908 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA)

ii. Donald Grant Hoffman (b. 18 Mar 1912 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA)

Bessie and Carl both grew up in Utica. In 1895, Bessie's paternal grandmother Betsy lived with her family at 72 New Hartford Avenue for a short time before Betsy moved in with her daughter Sarah Alice (McDonald) Leard. After her father's enlistment, the family moved to 7 Niagara St. Bessie's younger brother Jerry did not live with Bessie and their mother Mary, instead he resided with his maternal aunt in Salisbury Center. After Henry returned and divorced his wife, Bessie lived with him for a short period of time in Rochester, NY. However, she'd returned to the Utica area and lived with her aunt Sarah Alice in 1906, as she resided with her at the time of her marriage. She and Carl, who worked for his father Henry G. Hoffman making cigars, were married at 8pm at the Church of the Holy Communion. Although Henry attended her wedding and gifted the couple with a bedroom set, he did not walk Bessie down the aisle, that honor was held by her aunt Sarah Alice. Bessie and Carl honeymooned in the West (no specific places named).

In 1912, Carl's father died and the cigar business closed. Carl found employment at the West End Brewery Co., and later J. B. Wells & Sons Co., and eventually he spent eight years at H. K. Kline Co. from which he retired in 1954. The young family lived at 50 Shaw St. After Bessie's mother was widowed in 1917, she moved in with the Hoffman family for a few years, she continued to live with the family at 1516 Sunset Avenue in 1920. After Mary moved out, Bessie's brother Jerry, recently widowed in 1921, moved in with the family for a little while around 1925. Although Bessie did not work, she volunteered her time at the church, where she belonged to the Lutheran Workers Ladies' Society of which she was president for a time. She also dedicated a lot of time to preserving her father's family history. From the late 1920s through the late 1930s Bessie served as the president of the McDonald Family Association. In 1961, Marie (Leard) Mills, her first cousin, asked Bessie to write down all the descendants of John William McDonald, their patriarch whom they mistakenly believed was born in Scotland. Twelve copies were made, with two copies still known to be in existence.

Bessie (far left) and Carl (far right), also pictured Carl's sister Minnie Hoffman and H. Russell Hall, October 1952.

By 1933, Carl and Bessie's strained marriage fell apart. The two separated, though never officially divorced. Carl moved in with his spinster sisters Helen and Minnie Hoffman at 1914 Bradford Avenue, where he lived until his death in 1965. Carl is buried in his father's plot in Section 51 in Forest Hill Cemetery located in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA. Bessie resided with her son Donald and his first wife, Olwen. Bessie enjoyed a closer relationship with Donald than with her older son Ralph who remained close to his father and the Hoffman side of his family. When Bessie died in 1970, she was buried in her cousin Alice (Leard) William's plot in Deansboro Cemetery in Deansboro, Oneida, New York, USA.

While still in high school, Marion found herself pregnant with the couples' oldest child. Ralph and Marion eloped to Great Bend, PA. On her marriage application, Marion lied about her age, claiming she was 21 when in reality she was only 17. Because of the era Ralph and Marion grew up in, they felt compelled to tell people and then celebrate their wedding anniversary in April of every year, and Marion also would tell people their oldest was born prematurely. At the time of their marriage, Ralph had been working at Utica Mutual Insurance Co. (now the Utica National Insurance Co.) for three years. In 1931 he became an Accounting Clerk there and later climbed the ladder to Chief Accountant. In 1949, Ralph was elected to be Secretary-Comptroller of the company, and in 1953 he became a member of its Board of Directors. In 1968, he was elected Treasurer-Comptroller, a position he held until his retirement on May 1, 1973. To accompany Ralph's promotions and entrance into new social circles, Marion joined several National Societies including the Daughters of the American Revolution - Oneida Chapter. She also volunteered at the Eden Park Nursing Home (where one of their granddaughters would work later) and she also served as president of the Faxton Hospital Council for two terms. Marion also belonged to the local Easter Seal Society where she served as president and to the New York Easter Seal Society where she served as a board member and secretary. The couple had three children. They lived at 12 Lower Woods Rd. in New Hartford, NY. Ralph suffered from Parkinson's disease, which contributed to heart failure at the age of 83. She died on 02 Mar 1921 in Salisbury Center, Herkimer, New York, USA. He married (2) Minnie Gaige, daughter of Bazenne R. Gaige and Isabelle Rector, in Aug 1926. She was born in May 1888 in New York, USA. She died on 09 Apr 1960.

With Martha A. Cool, he had the following children:

i. Howard J. McDonald (b. Jun 1912 in Salisbury Center, Herkimer, New York, USA)

ii. Howard Charles McDonald (b. 03 Aug 1914 in Salisbury Center, Herkimer, New York, USA)

iii. Helen McDonald (b. 13 Jul 1915 in Salisbury Center, Herkimer, New York, USA)

With Minnie Gaige, he had the following children:

iv. Lloyd Gaige MacDonald (b. 29 Jun 1928 in Utica, Oneida, New York, USA)

Jerry spent his early childhood in New York Mills, living with his parents, older sister, and paternal grandmother. In December 1898 he ran away from home, taking the train to Salisbury Center, Herkimer, New York, USA; where his maternal aunt Jennie and her husband Charles Smith resided. Although he was returned to his parents' home, by June 1900 he was permanently residing with his aunt and uncle. His first wife, Martha, had grown up in Salisbury Center, and after her marriage, she remained close with her sisters and brother.

On September 17, 1912, at the age of three months, Jerry and Martha's first born child died of cholera infantum. In August 1920, Martha, her son Howard, and her sister Ethel were all placed under quarantine because of Consumption. Ethel died the following month, while Howard seems to have recovered. Martha remained ill, until she finally died on March 02, 1921. Her final resting place is unknown, though her family is buried in Salisbury Center. After her death, Howard and Helen lived with their maternal grandparents in Salisbury Center, NY. Jerry moved in with his sister Bessie and her family in Utica, NY. He resided with them until 1926, when he remarried. His second wife, Minnie had grown up in Saratoga and Schenectady, NY. He and Minnie returned to Utica after their marriage and their son was born there in 1928. Eventually the family settled in Dolgeville, Herkimer, New York, USA. Not long after the death of his uncle in 1933, his aunt Jennie moved in with the family and she resided with them until her death in May 1940. He spent most of his life working for Julius Breckwold in Dolgeville. He registered for both drafts (1917 and 1942), where he was described as having a fair complexion, brown hair, blue eyes, and standing around 5'10"; though he does not appear to have served. He and Minnie are buried in her parents' plot (Sec 3a Lot 71) in Grove Cemetery in Delanson, Schenectady, New York, USA.

Some notes of interest on Jerry include the fact his sister Bessie, in June 1961, leaves out all of his family from the Descendants of John W. McDonald and Besty [Betsy] B. Mills. She only lists her brother as being a child of her parents and records his death incorrectly as 1956. Neither of the names of his wives were preserved correctly in the family notes, nor were the names of his children remembered. Also of interest is that some time in the late 1920s Jerry adopted the spelling MacDonald, which his son Lloyd used. However, Howard and Helen both retained the McDonald spelling.
