Samuel McDonald

Samuel "Sammi"3 McDonald (Elias2, Collin1) was born on 10 Sep 1811 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 15 Apr 1869 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA. He married Hannah McIntyre about 1831. She was born on 24 Feb 1812 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 04 Feb 1867 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Hannah McIntyre, he had the following children:

i. Betsey McDonald (b. 19 Dec 1832 in Claverack, Columbia, New York, USA)

ii. William McDonald (b. Jan 1834 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iii. Eli McDonald (b. 14 Jul 1836 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

iv. John McDonald (b. 07 Dec 1838 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

v. Jacob McDonald (b. Mar 1841 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vi. Mary Ann McDonald (b. Mar 1843 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vii. Abram McDonald (b. about 1845 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

xii. Walter McDonald (b. Jul 1854 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

xiii. Louisa McDonald (b. about 1855 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

Samuel or Sammi was the fifth child and first son of Elias McDonald and Susannah Esselstein. He was baptized on 27 Oct 1811 at St. Thomas's Lutheran Church in Churchtown, Columbia, New York, USA. Samuel was a farmer. In the 1860s his real estate was worth $300. Compared to his neighbors' estates, his acreage must have been rather small as most neighbors report having $800 or significantly more (over $1000) real estate value. According to Roxanna (McDonald) Weaver's obituary her parents had a total of 14 children, only 13 of which are known. This fact is confirmed by the 1865 New York State Census which lists Hannah as having had 14 children with her current husband. Daughters Christina and Carolina probably married, but nothing so far has been turned up onto their actual fate. Rachel died on 19 Jun 1862 at age 11, she is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA. The youngest daughter Louisa was still living in 1875, but her fate remains unknown. Both Samuel and Hannah are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA.

Jacob4 McDonald (Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Mar 1841 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 02 Oct 1901 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA. He married Sarah Ann Scutt, daughter of Hiram Scutt and Polly Silvernail, in late 1863. Sarah was born on 28 Mar 1845 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 05 Aug 1919 in North East, Dutchess, New York, USA.

With Sarah Ann Scutt, he had the following children:

i. Edwin J. McDonald (b. 26 Sep 1864 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ii. Margueritte Luella "Maggie" McDonald (b. 05 Mar 1866 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iii. Anna J. McDonald (b. Oct 1867 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iv. Catherine M. McDonald (b. 15 Oct 1869 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

viii. Ruth K. McDonald (b. Apr 1878 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

ix. Phebe J. McDonald (b. 26 Nov 1880 in Columbia County, New York, USA )

x. George Rossman McDonald (b. 04 Oct 1882 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

xi. Mary A. McDonald (b. Aug 1883 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

Jacob was the fifth surviving child of Samuel and Hannah McIntyre McDonald. He grew up on his father’s farm in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA. Jacob, like his father, became a farm laborer. On July 1, 1863, Jacob registered for the Draft (Civil War), but was not called to service. At the time of his registering, he listed himself as single. He and Sarah married later that year. His wife had grown up in Taghkanic, NY, one of four children. After their marriage, Jacob and Sarah lived with her parents for several years. Her father died in 1869, and for a short time, her mother continued to live with the family (she died in 1888). In the mid-1870s, Jacob’s youngest sister Louisa also lived with the family. Sarah and Jacob had eleven children, all of whom are known. Daughters Ruth and Phebe died in infancy. Ruth died in 1878 and Phebe in 1881, both in Ancram, NY. Their burial locations are unknown.

Jacob and Sarah were probably not well off, as their daughters all married or moved out of the house by the age of 16 (Marguerite had left home by age 14 to work, Anna married at 16, Catherine married at 15, Olive married at 15, Blanche married at 16, and Mary married at 15). In mid-January 1898, Jacob slipped and fell on some ice on his way home from work. He fractured three of his ribs and was laid up for approximately six weeks. He was able to return to work at John Williams at the end of February 1898. Due to his injury, Jacob and Sarah had to postpone a trip eastward. In January 1901, Jacob was confined to bed with Grip. Sarah suffered the same in February 1901. Their daughter Blanche had to come take care of Sarah, implying Jacob was still weakened. Jacob fell ill again in the summer of 1901 and died after several months on October 2, 1901 at his home about one mile outside Ancram. He was buried in the E&M Church Cemetery in Copake, NY.

Around 1906, Sarah married George Wilson who’d been born about 1866 in either Maine or Vermont, USA. George worked as a laborer on a dairy farm. They made their home in North East, Dutchess, New York, USA on Center Street. After her daughter Mary died in March 1910, Sarah and George took in Mary’s oldest child, Raymond D. Delamarter who had just turned 10 the month before. They later moved to Elm Avenue where Sarah suffered two strokes, resulting in her death on 05 Aug 1919. She was interred in the Irondale Cemetery in Millerton, NY. George was still living in January 1920. Although he and Sarah shared a headstone in Irondale, no Date of Death is filled in for George.

Margueritte Luella "Maggie"5 McDonald (Jacob4, Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 05 Mar 1866 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 15 Jun 1926 in Manhattan, New York, New York, USA. She married Norman Plass in 1884. Norman was born in Mar 1863 in New York, USA. He died after Jun 1900.

Maggie was the second child and first daughter born to Jacob and Sarah Scutt McDonald. She grew up in Taghkanic and Ancram, NY. By the time she was 13 or 14 years old, she had left her parents’ home to work. She married Norman Plass in 1884 and afterwards they settled in Harlemville, a hamlet of Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, USA. While living here she visited her sisters Anna and Olive quite often in White Plains, NY and in Manhattan, NY. Norman and Maggie did not have any children. In July 1896, Norman fell backward off a load of hay. He badly injured his hip and it was reported the accident was likely to cripple him for life. After the accident, Norman and Maggie moved to Manhattan, maintaining a residence at 22 West 60th St. Maggie was still living there in 1905, but Norman no longer appears in the household. He may have died, or he may have been traveling. In the 1910 US Federal Census, Maggie reported that she was a widow living and working in the household of William Healy at 221 West 57th St. She also reported that she had had 1 child with 1 living, but no evidence for a child has yet been found. If she had a child, perhaps it was not with Norman (implying it was born out of wedlock) and she gave up the child for adoption? Or it could be an error on the transcriptionist part. Or it could be she did not give the report and whoever did thought Maggie had a child (perhaps a niece or nephew she was close to that William Healy or a neighbor assumed was her child?). In 1920, Maggie was living and working in the household of Edgar and Lucy Welch at 138 West 70th St. Maggie died in Manhattan at the age of 60. She was buried in Irondale Cemetery in Millerton, Dutchess, New York, USA. Norman’s burial location is unknown.

Anna J.5 McDonald (Jacob4, Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Oct 1867 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died 07 Jul 1948 in Chatham, Columbia, New York, USA. She married James Cook, son of John Cook and Caroline Van Wagner, on 11 Nov 1883. James was born in Nov 1857 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 18 Dec 1910 in Wassaic, Dutchess, New York, USA.

With James Cook, she had the following children:

i. Gordon David Cook (b. 23 Sep 1884 in Copake Falls, Columbia, New York, USA)

ii. Ethel M. Cook (b. 14 Sep 1886 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

iii. Floyd Cook (b. 24 Oct 1889 in Copake Falls, Columbia, New York, USA)

iv. Elva M. Cook (b. Apr 1894 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

v. Selena Cook (b. Jul 1897 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

vi. Ager James Cook (b. 1906 in New York, USA)

Anna J. was the second oldest daughter of Jacob McDonald and Sarah Scutt. Anna grew up outside Ancram, NY; she had two older siblings and six surviving younger siblings. Her middle name may have been Jeanette, as the 1880 US Federal Census recorded her name was “Anjenette,” and this was the only instance of it. Her husband James grew up in Copake, NY. They were married by the Rev. James C. Garretson, most likely the wedding took place in Ancram, where Anna had been residing at the time of her nuptials. After their wedding, the Cooks made their home in Copake Iron Works (now Copake Falls), Columbia, New York, USA. On June 14, 1889, while six months pregnant with her son Floyd, Anna was picking cherries from a tree on their property when the ladder slipped out from under her and she fell 10-12 feet to the ground! Luckily, Anna landed on her shoulder and only received some bruising, no broken bones.

Anna and James had a total of seven children, six of whom are known and five of whom survived into adulthood. Their unknown seventh child was born after the 1900 US Federal Census (conducted in June), as Anna reported she’d had five children with five living. This same child also died before the 1910 US Federal Census (conducted in April), where Anna reported she’d had seven children with six living. 1901-1903 is the year range the missing child was likely born, as there is a nine-year gap between Selena and Ager. In June 1902, James was promoted to section boss on the railroad and he moved the family to Wassaic, Dutchess, New York, USA. His son Floyd became his assistant on the railroad, when he was a young man.

James died rather suddenly at home at the age of 53 after a few weeks illness. His youngest son Ager, named for his paternal uncle (who himself was named for a patriarch in the Cook family), was not long behind him. When James died, his six children were still living. However, Ager James’s headstone near his father’s also bears 1910 as his date of death. However, the New York Death Index, Ager died on 15 Jun 1911 in Wassaic, NY. Sometime shortly thereafter, Anna moved to Brooklyn, NY where several of her sisters maintained residences. She also lived in Dover Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA. In the late 1920s, Anna took a job as a maid in John Arthur Hilton’s household at 34 Rugby Rd. J. Arthur was a lawyer. After his death, Anna continued to work for his relic, Jessie. Her sister Blanche and her second husband rented the other part of 34 Rugby Rd. in 1940. When her own health began to fail, Anna moved in with her daughter Elva Brenon in Chatham, NY. Just before Anna’s own death in the summer of 1948, her namesake granddaughter, Anna Mae Cooke, married Raymond D. Delamarter (the oldest son of Anna’s deceased sister Mary), Anna Mae and Ray were first cousins once removed. Anna was buried with her husband and son in the E&M Church Cemetery in Copake, NY.

Catherine M.5 McDonald (Jacob4, Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 15 Oct 1869 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 26 Aug 1939 in Cohoes, Albany, New York, USA. She married (1) Fremont Trebilcox, son of Joseph Trebilcox and Nancy Van Deusen, on 01 Jan 1889 in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, USA. Fremont was born in Jul 1856 in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, USA. He died after Jan 1918. She married (2) John Thomas Lee, son of Joseph Lee and Ruth, in 1916. John was born on 11 Nov 1852 in New York Mills, Oneida, New York, USA. He died on 25 Mar 1927 in Cohoes, Albany, New York, USA.

With Fremont Trebilcox, she had the following children:

i. Beulah M. Trebilcox (b. Mar 1892 in Craryville, Columbia, New York, USA)

ii. Olive B. Trebilcox (b. 18 Jun 1894 in Columbia County, New York, USA)

Catherine, usually called Katie by friends and family, grew up in Ancram, NY. She married her first husband, Fremont, on New Year’s Day 1889. Fremont had a twin brother, Dayton. He was considered fairly educated, worked as a day laborer, and belonged to the Protestant faith. After their marriage, Katie and Fremont settled in Craryville, NY and began their family. They had two daughters, Beulah and Olive. Beulah did not normally live with the family, instead residing with Phillip Acker, his wife Alice G. (Albert) Acker and their daughter Annie E. who later married John Barringer, in Stuyvesant Falls, NY. For some reason, Beulah listed her father’s name as Martin on her marriage application. Prior to 1915 (but after April 1910), Fremont and Katie separated and most likely a divorce was granted. In 1915, Fremont was living in Hillsdale, NY while Catherine was living in Cohoes, Albany, New York, USA at 93 Remsen Ave. According to the Troy City Directory published for the year 1916, Mrs. Catherine M. Trebilcox married John Lee. Fremont was still living, as he registered at the Columbia County Alms house on 02 Jan 1918. He was listed as sickly and unable to work as a result. He likely died in 1918, not having been found in the 1920 US Federal Census. His burial location is unknown, but is likely in Columbia County, New York, USA.

John Lee, Catherine’s second husband was born in New York Mills, Oneida, New York, USA. Shortly after his birth, his parents moved the family to Albany County were his next youngest sibling was born. John had been married once previously. His first wife, Sarah M. Unknown of England died on 15 Apr 1913 as a result of cirrhosis of the liver. They had had eight children together, four boys and four girls. John worked as a roll coverer in a cotton mill. After he and Katie married, they made their home at 33 Vliet Street in Cohoes, NY. John died there 11 years later due to myocardial degeneration. John and his first wife Sarah were both interred in their son William Olander Lee’s plot in the Albany Rural Cemetery in Menands, Albany, New York, USA. They are buried in Section 104, Lot 555. After John’s death, Catherine began renting at 410 Vliet Street, where she worked as a housekeeper. Her daughter Beulah predeceased her sometime earlier in the 1930s. Catherine died in Cohoes, NY and was buried in the Waterford Rural Cemetery in Waterford, Saratoga, New York, USA.

He died after Dec 1944.

Beulah appears to mainly have lived with Phillip and Alice G. (Albert) Acker and their daughter Annie E. (later wife of John Barringer). On her marriage license, she listed her father’s name as Martin Trebilcox.

Olive V.5 McDonald (Jacob4, Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Apr 1871 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died after 1939. She married John H. Burdick, son of John Wesley Burdick and Catharine Shultis, about 1886. John was born in Dec 1860 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 29 May 1934 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA.

Frequently called “Ollie,” Olive was the fourth daughter born to her parents. Her middle initial may have been an ‘E’ instead of a ‘V’. Olive appears to have been very close with her sisters Marguerite, Anna, Catherine and Blanche. Her youngest sister Mary was born only three years before Olive married John H. Burdick, a man 11 years her senior. She was married in 1886, when she was about 16 years old. For some time after their marriage, they lived in White Plains, NY before maintaining a residence in the Bronx. Although they rented a place in the Bronx and later Manhattan, they also had a second residence in Hillsdale, NY. John held a variety of jobs, including farmer, brakeman on the railroad, and in his old age, as a gardener. According to the census records, Olive and John never had any children.

In 1910, Olive’s sister Blanche came to live with them after she divorced her husband in March. In the 1920s and ‘30s, John lived at their home in Hillsdale, NY, while Olive remained in Manhattan working as a dress maker. She would come up from the City to Hillsdale to visit her husband. John died at his home in Hillsdale, NY as a result of heart trouble. He was buried in the E&M Church Cemetery in Copake, NY. Olive continued to live in Manhattan, but by 1938, she seems to have relinquished her apartment in the City and moved to Hillsdale, NY while picking up a place in Florida to spend her winters. Olive died after 1938 but before her sister Anna Cook died in Jul 1948.

Blanche V.5 McDonald (Jacob4, Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in May 1876 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died after Sep 1947. She married (1) Reuben Proper, son of Samuel A. Proper and Elizabeth A., in 1892 in Hillsdale, Columbia, New York, USA. Reuben was born in Oct 1864 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 04 Mar 1924. She married (2) Henry Klement on 01 Apr 1935 in New York City, New York, USA. Henry was born on 24 Dec 1884 in Manhattan, New York, New York, USA. He died in Jul 1964 in Hudson, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Reuben Proper, she had the following children:

i. Reuben Jacob Proper (b. 01 Aug 1893 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

Blanche grew up in Ancram, NY the second youngest of the surviving McDonald girls. She married, at the age of 16, a man 12 years her senior, Reuben Proper, a day-laborer. The newlyweds settled in Gallatin, NY. Blanche and Reuben had one child together. In April 1896, the entire family was suffering from the grip.

In February 1908, Reuben ran a notice in the local papers (right) in which he repudiated Blanche. Reuben had discovered that Blanche had been carrying on at least two extra-marital affairs, one with Daniel McDonald (no relation) and one with Aaron Scott. Both her sister Catherine and one of Reuben’s brothers testified that they saw Blanche carrying on inappropriately with one or both of the men in Gallatin and in Stuyvesant Falls. Blanche along with Daniel McDonald stayed at Catherine’s home in Stuyvesant Falls, NY for several days in February 1908, after she’d abandoned her home in Gallatin. Catherine testified that in addition to living as “man and wife” with Daniel, she also “went out riding” with Aaron Scott and on one occasion he purchased for her a veil and a black skirt in the amount of $6. This testimony put quite the strain on Blanche and Catherine’s relationship and Blanche left her sister’s household very angry.

While in the process of divorcing, Reuben remained at their home in Gallatin while Blanche removed to her sister Olive’s household in Manhattan, NY. In early October 1910, the divorce was granted. Reuben remained in Gallatin until at least 1919 and eventually removed to Waterbury, New Haven, Connecticut, USA. He died at the age of 59, his burial location is unknown.

Blanche eventually moved out of her sister’s household and into her own apartment at 318 W. 117th St. in Manhattan. She worked as a dressmaker to support herself. In 1930, Blanche had moved to 500 W. 174th St, living with an older gentleman named Benjamin Bradley, a salesman in the securities industry. Meanwhile, her future second husband, Henry was living at 5038 47th St. in Queens. He was working as a spinner in an upholstery mill. After their marriage, they began renting rooms at 34 Rugby Rd., where Blanches’s sister Anna was living and working in the Hilton household. Henry registered for the draft in 1942 (at the age of 58). He weighed 140lbs and stood 5’5.5” tall with blue eyes and grey hair. He was working for Edward Maag at 46 W. 23rd St. In mid-1947, perhaps after Anna’s health had begun to fail and she returned to Chatham, NY to live with her daughter Elva, Henry and Blanche began to look to rent 2-3 rooms and a kitchen near Church Ave & the BMT subway. After 3 months, they were still looking, but had changed their ad to 1.5-2 rooms with kitchen, and they included the fact Henry was a handyman. They appear to have moved out before 1949, as a newlywed couple took 3 rooms for rent in Jessie Hilton’s home after their honeymoon.

Blanche may have died before Jul 1948, as Anna’s obituary did not mention any living siblings. However, if Blanche were still living in the city, the paper could easily have neglected to mention a living sister who lived so far away. Henry died in Hudson in 1964 at the age of 79. His and Blanche’s burial locations are unknown.

Mary A.5 McDonald (Jacob4, Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Aug 1883 in Columbia County, New York, USA. She died on 7 Mar 1910 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. She married Charles R. Delamarter, son of Benjamin Franklin Delamarter and Ellen B., on 01 Jan 1899 in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. He was born in Apr 1865 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 02 Feb 1946 in Chatham, Columbia, New York, USA.

With Charles R. Delamarter, she had the following children:

i. Raymond D. Delamarter (b. 09 Feb 1900 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

ii. Ruth M. Delamarter (b. about 1902 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

iii. Unknown Delamarter (b. about 1904 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

iv. Roland Delamarter (b. about 1906 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

v. Clayton Frederick Delamarter (b. about 1907 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

vi. Florence Delamarter (b. about 1909 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA)

Mary and Charles were married at the Reformed Parsonage, she was only just passed her 15th birthday and he was 33 almost 34. They made their home in Copake Iron Works, briefly called Berkshire Pass, and now called Copake Falls. Charles worked as a carpenter and a farm laborer. The couple had at least six children, only five of whom are known by name. The winter of 1909-1910 was particularly devastating for the young family and split them apart. On November 23, 1909, after having suffered from Scarlet Fever for five days, a young son (Roland) died. Mary herself died on March 7 after having been ill only a few days. The paper reports that Mary's youngest of the five children (Florence) was not expected to survive, and she died on March 11, 1910. This leaves only one unknown surviving child who must have died before Charles did in 1946 (as he only mentions Raymond, Clayton and daughter Mrs. Colin Knight). In April 1910 Charles had already spread his children out among the families. His brother Fred and step-mother Roxana took in Clayton; Mary's mother Sarah and her second husband George Wilson took in Raymond; and Ruth went to live with Emmett and Anna (Conklin) Miller who were friends of her parents. Charles eventually owned a home on the Craryville Dirt Road. He may have been married once before Mary, to a woman named Lizzie Phillips in August 1894. The paper reports they eloped. Lizzie's fate is unknown, she may have died or once they returned the marriage might have been considered invalid and the two parted ways. Mary is buried in the E&M Church Cemetery in Copake, Columbia, New York, USA. Her young children may be buried with her in her father-in-law's family plot. Interesting, her maiden name is given as MacDonald and her married name is misspelled as Delamater. Charles's final resting place is unknown.

Abram4 McDonald (Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born about 1845 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died between Jun 1890 and 1895 in Columbia County, Wisconsin, USA. He married (1) Mary Donahue on 02 Nov 1867 in Manhattan, New York, New York, USA. Mary was born about 1842 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. She died before Jun 1870. He married (2) Elizabeth R. Allen, daughter of Alexander Allen and Unknown, on 13 Jul 1870 in Caledonia, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA. She was born in Aug 1839 in Scotland. She died on 07 Jun 1909 in Portage, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA.

With Elizabeth R. Allen, he had the following children:

i. John McDonald (b. 22 Nov 1872 in Caledonia, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA)

ii. Jane W. "Jeanie" McDonald (b. 23 Sep 1874 in Caledonia, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA)

iii. Lula McDonald (b. about 1877 in Caledonia, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA)

iv. Ida McDonald (b. Jan 1880 in Norway Ridge, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA)

v. Chester McDonald (b. 10 Jun 1881 in Caledonia, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA)

vi. George McDonald (b. 10 Mar 1884 in Caledonia, Columbia, WisconsinUSA)

Abram was raised in Ancram, NY, the fifth son of Samuel and Hannah (McIntire) McDonald. He attended the local school until he was 17/18 years old. He also worked as a farm laborer in his youth. On 27 Feb 1864, Abram enlisted as a private in Co. D of the New York 47th Infantry in Kingston, Ulster, New York, USA. According to the records, Abram was living in Catskill, Greene, New York, USA. He served for a period of one year, five months, and four days; being discharged on 30 Aug 1865 in Raleigh, Wake, North Carolina, USA. During his service, Abram was wounded in his left shoulder, chest and arm. Afterward he returned to Columbia Co., NY. He was residing there at the time of his first marriage while his wife Mary had been living in New York City. The couple likely made their home in Columbia County, but Mary appears to have died shortly after their marriage. If they had any children, none seem to have survived passed 1869. Mary's burial location is unknown. She likely died in New York, her death perhaps being one of the reasons Abram decided to move to Wisconsin. He was living in the household and working as a laborer on the farm of Thomas Robertson, a Scottish immigrant, in Caledonia, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA. Caledonia is the Latin name for Scotland. He married his second wife, Elizabeth, on July 13th of that year.

Elizabeth had been married once previously to Duncan Brodie, a Scottish immigrant like herself. Elizabeth had been born in Scotland and immigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada with her family. She married Duncan there around 1863. Their daughter Elizabeth was born about 1864 in Nova Scotia, Canada. Approximately 1865, Elizabeth, Duncan and baby Elizabeth immigrated to the United States, settling in Caledonia, Columbia, Wisconsin, USA. Elizabeth had two more children: Isabelle "Belle" Brodie (b. 03 Oct 1866) and Robert (b. 14 Nov 1868). Duncan died sometime before Jun 1870. Abram and Elizabeth had six children together, possibly seven as Elizabeth reported in 1900 to have given birth to ten children with nine surviving (these being the nine known children of Elizabeth). It is equally possible the unknown tenth child belonged to her first husband Duncan. Their daughter Lula was still living in 1900, but her married name remains unknown so it has not be possible to trace her descendants.

Abram was still alive in Jun 1890 when the Eleventh US Federal Census was conducted. He and his family were the 59th family enumerated in their ward. Although the Population Schedule has been lost, Abram's information in the Veteran's Schedule was preserved. On 20 Jun 1895, when the Wisconsin State Census was conducted, Mrs. A. McDonald was listed as the head of household. Abram had died in his late 40s or at the age of 50. Chester and George continued to live with their widowed mother until her death in 1909. Abram and Elizabeth's burial locations are unknown.

Roxanna4 McDonald (Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 08 May 1849 in Ancram, Columbia, New York, USA. She died on 16 Feb 1927 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA. She married James Weaver, son of Unknown Weaver and Amelia, about 1866. He was born in Sep 1825 in Columbia County, New York, USA. He died on 07 Feb 1915 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA.

With James Weaver, she had the following children:

i. Mary A. Weaver (b. Nov 1866 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA)

ii. Eliza H. Weaver (b. 30 May 1869 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA)

iii. Ida B. Weaver (b. Apr 1872 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA)

iv. Louisa A. Weaver (b. 25 Jul 1874 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA)

Roxanna grew up the tenth surviving child of her parents. According to her obituary she was one of fourteen, but only twelve of her siblings’ names are attested. Roxanna was born and raised in Ancram, NY having moved to Pine Plains, NY only after her marriage to James Weaver around the end of 1865 or early in 1866. According to both the 1900 and 1910 US Federal Census, Roxanna gave birth to five children with only four living. She and James raised their family in Pine Plains.

In 1875, the Weaver family lived in a framed house worth $300 (most of their neighbors’ homes were worth $1500 or more). In addition to the family of six were James’s older brother Henry and older sisters Eliza and Mary. Eliza and Mary also lived with their brother prior to his marriage to Roxanna. James worked as a clerk in a store in 1875 while his brother was a farm laborer. James had also been a school teacher in his youth. Mary, Eliza and Louisa all moved out of their parents’ home when able. Their daughter Ida and her new husband continued to live with her parents after their marriage in 1891. James, Roxanna, and daughter Ida and family continued to live together until James’s death.

James died at the age of 89 as a result of a complication of diseases at his home in Pine Plains on Sunday, February 7, 1915. He was buried the following Wednesday in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, NY. His headstone was inscribed with 1914 as his death year. Shortly after James’s death, Roxanna moved in with her granddaughter Verna (Tompkins) Blass and her family in Ancram, NY. As her health declined, Roxanna moved in with her daughters Eliza and Louisa. Roxanna expired around 5 o’clock in the evening on February 16, 1927 at the Church St. home of her daughters in Pine Plains. She had been invalid for over two years, having become completely helpless in October of 1926. She was buried the following Sunday, the Rev. G. F. Langdon presided over the ceremony. She was interred in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, NY next to her late husband.

Mary A.5 Weaver (Roxanna4, Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born in Nov 1866 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA. She died on 22 Dec 1926 in North East, Dutchess, New York, USA. She married John S. Pitcher, son of James H. Pitcher and Coralie, on 16 Mar 1887 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA. He was born in Dec 1865 in Dutchess County, New York, USA. He died on 25 Dec 1925 in North East, Dutchess, New York, USA.

Mary was raised in Pine Plains, NY; in addition to her three younger sisters, her paternal uncle and to paternal aunts lived with her family. Her husband, John, was also from Pine Plains. After their marriage, they lived with John’s family in Pine Plains, only a few houses away from her own parents. Later, John would owned his own farm in the Silver Mountain area of North East, NY. John and Mary were attendants of the Stone Church there. In 1909, John was elected as a Deacon of the church. John and Mary had no children, but they frequently entertained friends and family at their home. When John took ill in the winter of 1925 he was cared for by his sister-in-law Mrs. Ida Tompkins at her home in Patchin’s Mills where he died on Christmas Day. Mary died almost a year later, on December 22, 1926. Mary’s funeral took place on December 31, 1926 in Pine Plains, NY. Both were buried in the Irondale Cemetery in Millerton, NY.

Eliza H.5 Weaver (Roxanna4, Samuel3, Elias2, Collin1) was born on 30 May 1869 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA. She died on 21 Aug 1941 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA. She married James Stall Bowman, son of Otis Eseck Bowman and Sarah Hicks, on 15 Aug 1900 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess, New York, USA. Jacob was born on 24 Nov 1842 in Lafayetteville, Milan, Dutchess, New York, USA. He died on 07 Jan 1911 in Pine Plains, Dutchess, New York, USA.

Eliza grew up in Pine Plains, NY. As a young woman, she worked as a servant in the home of her future husband. She also attended the Seymour Smith Academy. On August 15, 1900 she quietly married Jacob Stall Bowman in a private ceremony. The Rev. Robert F. Crary, D.D., Rector of the Church of the Holy Comforter, performed the ceremony. Eliza was Jacob’s second wife; he having become a widower nine years prior. Eliza moved into Jacob’s home on Church St. in Pine Plains. Her sister Louisa later joined her and the two continued to live together, along with their mother and later maternal aunt Mary A. (McDonald) Tanner until Eliza’s death in 1941. Eliza left her entire estate to her sister Louisa, it did not include any real estate, but listed at more than $2500 in personal property. Eliza was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, NY; her sister Louisa is interred next to her.

Eliza’s husband Jacob was a descendant of the Bowermans from Falmouth, MA and New Bedford, CT who migrated first to Dover in 1780 and then to Milan in 1790. His grandfather Maltiah Bowerman settled in Lafayette in the town of Milan, NY. Jacob’s father, Otis E. was a surveyor and for twenty years a lawyer.

Jacob spent his early life learning the trade of mason and builder; he was considered one of the most skilled of his trade in his day. He enlisted in Company C, 128th Regiment, N.Y.S. Volunteers in August of 1862. He served as a corporal all through the war under Captain Thomas N. Davis. After being honorably discharged in Albany, NY, he returned home. In 1866 he married his first wife, Julia E. Thorn with whom he had three children: Lina Amy Barrett (1870-1963), Ada Bowman (1872-1881), and Wilber Jacob Bowman (1876-1956). Julia died on 03 Oct 1891.

In 1876 he purchased his future drug store from Philip Piester, he remodeled the building (located just east of the Stissing National Bank; see photo to left). Jacob opened the store in early 1877 and he ran the store, taking on his son as a partner, until his death in 1911. In addition to running his own drug store, he also served as Town Supervisor in 1892 and as Post Master in 1885 and was recommended to be Post Master again in 1893. He was a member of the Stissing Lodge, No. 615, F&AM where he served as treasurer for twelve years including at the time of his death. He served as foreman on the Grand Jury in the spring of 1894. He was a communicant of the Episcopal Church of the Regeneration and was its Senior Warden for several years as well. In 1889 he donated a bell to the church for its bell tower (which at the time had no bell). Jacob was considered a stout Democrat.

So beloved by the community was Jacob that his death at the age of 68 was considered a great shock. Jacob had been suffering from neuralgia of the heart shortly before his death. He attended his son’s annual Christmas Eve dinner on Saturday. The following Tuesday he was taken with neuralgia pains and confined to his home. Despite his confinement, the illness was not considered serious. Although he made a complete recovery, only a few days later he suffered a stroke and died at his home. Ironically, moments before his death he remarked to his son that he hadn’t felt this well since before his confinement to his home. Jacob is buried with his first wife in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, NY. His son Wilbur erected a memorial tablet for his father (and another for his mother) on November 21, 1911 at the Episcopal Church.
