The Cubanapolis race is run by Dens with the cub scouts as the driver and parents as pit crew personnel. Each scout runs three laps around the course and drivers must pull over for a pit stop after each lap. The first pit stop is for fuel and racer ID (eat a piece of fruit and paint their initials on their forehead). The second pit stop is to top off fluids and headlights (drink a small cup of water and make and wear a glow stick necklace).
In the past, the original version included a pit stop to change tires (pit crew takes the scouts shoes and socks off, turn socks inside out, put them back on, and puts shoes back on). This was a little more difficult for our younger scouts and resulted in a longer pit time, so we modified the pit activity to change it up a bit.
Get a cardboard box big enough to fit around your scout as shown. Scout designs and cuts out his "car" with adult help/supervision Leave about 2-inches of the top and bottom at each end to strengthen the box. The design does not have to be a car. Cut two holes in the side of the box to use for carrying during the race. Decorate his creation (paint, color, add wheels, anything). Another design option is to just have the box fit around the scout's waist (open at the top and bottom) so he can reach over the top and hold the bottom of the box as he runs around the track. Some have used a suspenders system to help hold the box up.
