SETTING UP SEWING SPACE
Great to have a personal place to sew and be organized. It gives a chance to be surrounded by your hobby. You can run in and sew ten minutes with everything all open and not have to be concerned about cleaning up.
SEWING ROOM NECESSITIES:
All sewing rooms need a place to cut stitch and press and storage.
1. CUTTING AREA:
The cutting area is of prime importance. A fold table is good to use with cutting matsfor rotary cutting. You should be able to work easily without excessive bending and back strain or upward arm movement. It is good to have a 48" looong cutting surface to accommodate fabric of long lenths. An island in themiddle of thesewing room is ideal beaude you can move all around the unit. Also it can be use to make craft items, such as flower arrangemtns, stuffed dolls, wreaths, baskets et. Several ready-made cut surfaces are available. Many will collapse into smaller units for storage.
Cover the table with a large cutting mat. Get one with a forgiving surface designed to use with a rotary cuter and ruler.. Mats will protect the surface from being marked by eithr the rotary cutter and sheers.
A bulletin board is a good thing to have nearby for penning pieces of fabric etc..
All cutting tools shoudl be kept nearby for easy acess in basket. A basket for waste fabric is also handy to have nearby.
2. Stitching area
A large table can hold two or three sewing machines with plenty of room. I use a birch board for my sewing machines. A set of two filing cabinets hold it up on each end, and there I have extra storage drawers and also a place for the sewing chair to fit under the table.
3. Pressing:
I use a small folding board covered with heat proof material. It sits next to the sewing machines, and is very handy.
4. Storage:
Storage area is a must. A small file cabinet can be used with shelves to store any extra fabric. It's good to know what one has and where to find it. Also lots of electric outlets are handy and useful.
5. THREAD:
Racks are good for thread storage. A small waste basket can also be used for more thread. I use a see through wire can to hold the ones that do not fit on the racks. Storing trhread right will keep it from tangling.
6. ROTARY CUTTERS
Rotary cutters are one of the treatest tools for quilt making and cutting other things for regular sewing. The cutting mat protects your table an the blade.
7. LIGHTING:
Lighting is a must. Also a good chair. A rotating chair is very nice, because you can roll around the area without having to get up.
HAPPY SEWING!
