This course focused on organizing information through MARC records.
The course required 2 major assignments and other minor ones:
- Cataloging Manual- using the rules of MARC records, this catalog details how to create a MARC record for an item in the library. This manual is helpful for the novice writer.
- ALA/AASL Standards: 1, 2, 4
- Dewey PowerPoint- in a collaborative effort, I worked with a group to emphasize the importance of the Dewey Decimal system. In a changing world, some libraries are adopting the bookstore model of organization and this group presentation displays the importance of keeping the DDC.
- ALA/AASL Standards: 1, 2, 3
- Minor assignments- included are two cataloging assignments. One focuses on physical description of 3 items and the other focuses on the Sears subject headings.
- This course was very strong in using different approaches to catalog and classify materials. We used key tools such as DDC, RDA, MARC, and more to classify. I feel confident in using my cataloging manual as a guide but think I could work more on actually creating MARC records in my own library. I also could focus more on the subject headings as materials come in with MARC records created already.
